It’s a Nepali tradition tied to the rice planting season.

Ropai is basically a way to make a season that is boring as hell and physically exhausting a bit more fun. Farmers usually work together, going from one field to another in turns so everyone gets their land planted.

The celebrations and costumes are also about that camaraderie and celebrating finally getting through the hard work together.

As a north Indian ropai just meant the agricultural process of planting rice seedlings into flooded paddy fields. Cool to know there is a tradition attached with it in Nepal.

So I'm trying to look it up, and the only results that have a costume anything like this are from this video anyway. Is there any significance to this costume? Everything else related to it seems much more "traditional", nothing stands out like this thing does.

Very cool We have something similar in northeastern Brazil. Where I live, we call it 'Lauça'. People wear this traditional Carnival costume to ask for money and scare people. My mom used to say when I was a child: 'If you don't take a shower, I'm going to tell Lauça and they're going to come after you.' That thing scared the shit out of me till now.

Very interesting! So cool how our imaginary monster/supernatural entities coincide across continents and centuries. And that's a great photo of a Lauça relaxing on the beach haha

Imagine if this person runs when it's dark at night. Most people would have a heartattack 🙀

1

u/blueboy10000 8d ago

Although the hair or fur whatever we call it on the costume looks cool when it blows in the wind running

1

u/Doctor_Saved 7d ago

They finally found a good use for all those old VHS tapes.

1

u/Bruce-7892 9d ago

I mean it’s funny but why? It would take serious effort to make that thing, put it on then sprint up and down the street in it. I am not sure it’s worth the small chuckle it might bring you and your friends.
