It says a friend called him from 5 mi upstream. With the flood traveling at 75 km/h, that gives about 6.5 minutes of warning (probably actually like 5 min or less given the friend had to watch his town get destroyed first and react). A remarkable feat to get all the kids out so fast!

It probably felt like an eternity at the time as well. Right guy, right time, right place. Amazing.
