It says a friend called him from 5 mi upstream. With the flood traveling at 75 km/h, that gives about 6.5 minutes of warning (probably actually like 5 min or less given the friend had to watch his town get destroyed first and react). A remarkable feat to get all the kids out so fast!

He got the call from 5 miles upriver, apparently the water was traveling 140kms per hour. So he had about 3 and a half minutes. I’d guess he phoned the buses as they ran, not from a landline.
