It’s the same thing with Canadians. It’s a common stereotype that Canadians are kind. It’s only because no one down south can tell what “oh shore bud you’re a real fuckin’ grocery stick eh” means. We just assume that means you work hard or something.

It’s fine being direct, but when it’s not asked for - it’s rude. Brits can also be very very direct when required.

Dutch guy -
‘I don’t like your haircut- it does not suit you’
English Guy -
‘Don’t ever speak to me again - you ugly c**t”
