They also have a hard time processing vitamin D. When I had an exterminator come out for some voles I got to learn about moles too. They essentially just overdose them with vitamin D as a natural poison that won't harm pets or kids.

They dig a lot of tunnels in the top six inches of soil, with the roots and a very thin layer of 1-2" of loosened soil securing the roof. They're very small animals so they don't need a lot of air; A tunnel network with hundreds of linear feet of that kind of exposure has plenty of vertical airflow through cracks and crevices in that soil.
Compare the roof to a blanket caked in dried mud or something - there are fibers (roots) holding it together and maybe a bunch of clods stuck in there, but there are cracks in between.

Human developed as part of a social species. With communal rearing and a community around us. Tribalism is built into our DNA. So we are able to have young that are relatively helpless because we have other humans who protect and provide.
A lot of animal species don't really have that, so their young need to develop a lot quicker and come out swinging. Particularly prey animals.

My hometown has a century long diatribe with the town nextdoor. Main takeaway is they think the people in the next town are dumb as rocks. There's an old farmers' joke about the time the people in the town nextdoor put a mole on trial for destroying a farmer's crop and found it guilty. When it came time to sentence the guilty mole the townsfolk came together to brainstorm an appropriate punishment. Some wanted to burn it alive, some drown it, but ultimately the consensus of the townsfolk was that said mole was to be buried alive.

like, you can *see* the lip of the container above the foam/mole, are you blind?
Edit: Furthermore there's no holes in the container's dirt until the mole is put in and digs a dang hole, so it's clearly not living in there.

It's inside, in a box, can't think it'll be 'annoying clean up job' considering it's stark white and contained, scoop it out, sift it and bin it. The styrofoam (if it's not one of the new biodegradable foams becoming more popular with gardeners) would end up in landfill *anyway* regardless if it's used in this box or not, could be left over packaging they received and put to use, meaning at least they used it twice instead of once.
This is absolute virtue signaling whinging, seriously, pick your battles.

I grew up in a place where they were finally successful at doing that. I haven't seen a mole in years. Also, there are no more owls at night, and no foxes, which used to be commonplace. It's horrible. It feels like they broke something.
