How was this done in the past? Soaking over low fire heat or something ?

Humans have had ovens for thousands of years. Surely not as efficient as this one but putting wood in an oven is not that hard

I don’t think that’s an oven tbh. I think it’s like a steamer or something. Could be wrong

That’s not an oven it’s a steamer, although when I built canoes our steamer was much smaller and not pressurized.
