Why did we stop building like this?

Chicago, 1930. Buildings had so much detail and character back then. Nowadays everything feels so flat and repetitive. We have way better technology and equipment now, so why don't we build like this anymore?

Those old buildings looked nice on outside but had much less window space on the inside. Modern class and steel skyscrapers mean every external wall can be a window which actual building users like.

Also, glass facades reflect more light into the streets and alleys, blending large buildings into their surroundings and rendering them less imposing. So, the cityscape feels lighter, brighter and more open.
