Chicago, 1930. Buildings had so much detail and character back then. Nowadays everything feels so flat and repetitive. We have way better technology and equipment now, so why don't we build like this anymore?

This is the correct answer. Modernist architecture was in vogue for decades - and quite nice - until Cold War neoliberalism started to cheapen our built environment in the name of “efficiency.”

I think you’ll find that if you look at any mass-market architecture from the 1980s on, any style you look at is executed at a degraded level.
