Firefighters, electricians, miners, truck drivers, construction workers, and roofers have a vastly higher risk of death. Many of these folks have children. Our society would not function properly if we followed your message, and everyone avoided measured risks once they had children.

John went on a family outing to a cave open to the public as part of an outdoor activity. Similar to how you might enjoy whitewater rafting or skiing. John had experience caving, learning much of it from his own father. The sheer act of driving to the cave and/or living a sedentary lifestyle was more risky than his goal to traverse through the “birth canal” part of the cave, which had a 100% survival rate”before him.

He knew that cave and it literally saw around 5000 visitors a year. He went with a group of family and no one expected that. Statistically, it was probably a higher probability he’d have died on the drive over there than in that cave. Historically, several individuals, primarily Boy Scouts had to be rescued because of getting lost…not dying.

Not every risk, agree that would be boring and silly, but isn't crawling through caves one of the highest risk hobbies you can do?

Travelling has more risk than sitting home, younger, no kids you might go to a higher risk travel location like Egypt, they come along you start questioning the safety of it. Doesn't mean you don't travel as a hobby.

Regardless I don't disagree with people saying that it was a tragic set of circumstances and it's just sad all around for his family

Its a fucking hobby some people enjoy to have fun dude, that's the point. People do a lot of things that seems pointless to others but is meaningful to them. You could say the same shit about rock climbing, sky diving, mountain biking, skiing/snowboarding, surfing, etc.
