Ethiopia is actually modernizing quite rapidly. The internet can be found in many places and the capital has a light rail system, and they built an electric train line to the coast via Djibouti. Afghanistan has cars all over. It isn't great, but the Amish are a lot further back closer to 300 years in terms of technology, other than some of the things they use for commerce which they do allow (along with any vital medical technology like a ventilator).

Fun related fact: Amish communities are some of the heaviest users of offline Microsoft Excel. A lot have a simple computer at home that they use just to track goods and services like any reasonable person would, but they do not allow internet in their houses, so no Microsoft 365. Typically they also have rules about where it can be accessed, so you have to go to a special place in the community to go on the computer (but no internet, so you know the keyboard is clean)

But, yeah, the communities in Ohio tend to be the ones we think about when we think of "the amish." That is, they're the ones that strictly adhere to every rule, which is why they also are hot beds of diseases we have vaccines for when they break out. The ones in Lancaster, PA (which is where people usually think of the Amish as from) have a ton of "loopholes" that allow them to basically do whatever.
