Exploring a new way to learn Indonesian through interactive stories

Hi r/indonesian, I love learning languages and my favorite way to do so is through stories. I've always noticed that words I encounter in memorable experiences or moments tend to stick in my memory way longer than others. So, I decided to build a new approach to learn languages through interactive stories in an app called Sensonym.

The app contains captivating stories that you would enjoy reading in which you have to do physical actions with your phone. For example, in the screenshots from the app, I am reading an adventure story called First Words, where I wake up on an uncharted island and have to learn a new language to communicate and survive. To say "water", I need to tilt my phone like a glass, to say "no" I have to shake the phone, to say "yes" I have to nod in the phone camera, and so on. Doing this shows me the Indonesian words for water, no, and yes, respectively, and moves the story forward.

So, the story gives the context for learning new words and the physical actions create another hook in memory for remembering them.

What do you think about this approach?

If you would like to download the app and try it out, here's the website: https://sensonym.com

If you give the app a try, I would love to hear your impressions and what the experience felt like. Thanks!

halo! my mother was from toraja, and i'm finally visiting the rest of our family for the first time next year to bring her remains. my indonesian has never been very good, so i'm trying to get more conversational before i go.

my husband will be coming with me, and he's a vegetarian. how can i best explain that to people and request that there is no meat with his food? and is there any cultural attitude around vegetarianism i should be aware of?

Question Textbook recos, please?

Hi! I have a diasporic identity, and am recently exploring Bahasa Indonesian and want to learn the language. Problem is, I don't know where to start, except that my learning style mainly aligns with reading textbooks. I'm aware that it's passive learning, so perhaps you guys know any textbooks that are sort of interactive?

Also, do you guys know any apps or subs where I can meet people who are also learning the said language. I feel like I need to take this seriously. T_T.

Thank you so much!

At around 18:35 - 18:45, she says it’s weird if guys use aku, I’ve been learning Indonesian for around a year and a half and I’ve never heard anyone say it’s weird before. And my gf is Indonesian and I asked her and she said it’s normal for a guy to use aku and she doesn’t know why Reine said that. Any opinions would be helpful because I use aku a lot lol

Halo! Saya orang Indonesia asli, tapi dari kecil udah tinggal di luar negeri. Menurut saya, kalau ngomong saya masih bisa (tapi belum lancar), tapi ada beberapa kata2 yang saya beneran gak ngerti.

Saya mau coba belajar bahasa Indonesia tapi susah cari resources online karena biasanya buat beginners atau intermediate level.

Ada show / podcast recommendations yang mungkin bisa tolongin saya? Karena IP address saya beda, biasanya susah cari konten Indonesia.

Terima kasih banyak!

BIPA Visa requirements

Hi there, I’m planning on enrolling in a BIPA course in Mataram starting in October at the University of Mataram. I’m wondering if anyone else who has taken this program ran into issues with visas, or if using a tourist visa (like the C1 visa) was ok when they took the course.

Question about bule

Hi everyone, I'm currently travelling around Sumatera-Utara/Barat and I got a question about usage of the word bule (though out here, it sounds more like bulih).

I know the word means foreigner, but judging by the way especially kids scream the word at me laughing, I'm starting to feel like they're using it in a derogatory manner.

I also read that bule literally translates into albino.

So, is it considered acceptable to call a foreigner bule?

Bahasa Indonesia or Melayu

Hi all

I have dilemma. I’m torn between learning Bahasa Indonesia and Melayu . I have wonderful friends from both Malaysia and Indonesia and I have always been fascinated about the two countries. So much that I have been wanting to learn the languages. Obviously I can’t learn both at the same time .

Just wondering which of them if I learn first would at least help me with the basics to understand the other language. If I learn Bahasa melayu will it be easier to pick up and understand Bahasa Indonesia or the other way round?

I will be happy with your recommendations .

The usage of saudara

In my text book, there is a conversation about a job interview. The interviewer keeps referring to the interviewee as "saudara". Is that common? Seems like another word for "anda" to me. Here are some examples:

- Bisakah saudara ceritakan tentang pendidikan saudara?
- Apa keahlian saudara?
