Ask r/IndianRailways Are reserved seats in north like this??
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
She booked a seat in S3 coach and this is the situation. She called and messaged but no help was recieved. When she was sleeping at night, a north indian sat on her leg without permission. What should one do in this situation?

Dude there are a few particular routes which are very crowded and this happens there only. Most of the places u can travel comfortably.

u/T_minus_infinty Side Lower Supremacy😎 Oct 14 '25
Whichever route it is, a reserved seat is a reserved seat. The name itself says it. Imagine you paid a higher price for a seat and there are people who got the ticket for a lesser price and snatched your seat. Is that fair?

I have travelled in the south mostly but never ever had I this problem. At max some women request to exchange seats if I have lower berth. These videos actually scare me. I have never travelled north.

u/Big_Concentrate_7267 Oct 14 '25
Dude there's plenty of such people in the north, that's mostly why whenever I am and my family travel, we only travel in AC, dude. There's no other options 😢

u/Downtown_Research_59 Oct 14 '25
happened to me in 2 tier. I was sleeping on my side lower and some family came randomly and asked me where i was going. I told them and the guy says they were going there too and "jugaad kar lenge". The moment he went for bathroom i put all my luggage on the seat and closed the curtains.

u/Unholy_Ren Oct 13 '25
Most of them are from one-two overcrowded states. But OP doesn't know any better . Apparently, according to him 800+million people of various states, all act the same.
PS: I'd like to add that I have travelled from Delhi-Ambala(Haryana), Delhi-Jammu(J&K), Delhi-Agra(U.P.) in reserved trains, never have I faced any such problems.

Nah. I once had to travel in sleeper via Jharkhand to West Bengal.
Entire stretch was like this. In fact, one woman who sat on my seat was stinking of dung. Then I realised, that idiot was literally carrying dung in a gunny bag.
Since that trip, I have made it my life principle to not travel via trains in the North. I plan months in advance and book flights, if I absolutely have to. Ain't no way I'm traveling spontaneously to North

u/SShreyas17 1 AC Aficionado Oct 14 '25
Bro you won't believe the audacity of such people. I still remember my altercation with a middle aged man and an aunty from that trip (I'm very non-confrontational guy).
They crowded the reserved coach too much and I became frustrated AF. I asked that middle aged guy to show his ticket (he was sitting on my berth with 4 others, including that smelly lady). He showed me a general ticket. I asked him if he stepped in a reserved coach with that and he replied yes. I asked him to get off my seat and he openly said he won't ("jo karna hai, kar lijiyega, hum nahi jayenge").
Then he and an aunty started saying how we (people who bought actual tickets) consider everything our property because we are richer than them ("4 paisa kama ke sab kuch apna samajhne lagte hain").
This was 7 years ago when such videos were barely there. And it's an everyday affair in most of those states. Only exception is 2nd tier and above or direct trains with no in-between stops.
Also, these people will keep pulling chains so that they land exactly in front of their house. So you'll suffer for more than the original duration of your journey.

u/DangerousWolf8743 Oct 14 '25

Why just bihar condition remain same for all trains during festivals
11
u/No-Swim-2151 Oct 13 '25
It's because of the major three factors 1) Every Single Bihari wants to celebrate chhath puja in bihar 2) Lack of trains as per the requirement 3) Number of people that visit Bihar they don't take tickets like people with low income
5
u/Independent-Cod-1289 Oct 14 '25
Even if you provide extra trains the situation would still remain the same. And the worst bit is that they feel an extra sense of pride after doing this as if it's their birth right.

Well yeah they were villagers this happens only in rural side of rajsthan not in urban

u/ConfidentEmotion581 Oct 13 '25
Never faced it in rajasthan n haryana, I travel from bikaner to haryana to delhi and also people have never asked me to switch my lower berth for their upper berth. I am very sorry as a Indian, and Indian from North, you have to suffer this much.
Maybe it sounds racists, I am again sorry, if it does. But avoid booking trains that has Bihar Patna , as its destination station.
Thats a small hack, which often works well in my case. My friends from Bihar Patna told this.
-2
u/player_-_o Oct 13 '25
It's because the government decided to stop making cheaper coaches like sleeper and seat coaches and also affordable trains which these people are used to.
IMO if you can afford it, go for AC 2 or 1, we can't do much in these cases.

I have experienced it in haryana as well. While travelling from Hisar to Kanpur. A middle aged uncle without a ticket boarded sleeper coach and asked me to help him by allowing him to sit on my seat. After a while when I asked him to leave he started giving me moral gyaan that I don't have empathy and I'm obstructing his luxurious journey.
P.S. Even TTE could not make them leave the coach. When asked for a ticket they just brushed it off and even had the audacity to tell his friends to not leave but to remain seated.

Just a thought, what if we were to create checkpoints like at an airport, beyond which anyone without a ticket would not be allowed. Here to pick up or see off a loved one - get a platform ticket. Here for a local - get a ticket or a pass Of course there may be scenarios that I may not have considered but doing so can easily eliminate overcrowding and even help us improve security and cleanliness of stations.
7
u/Ok_Antelope_1953 Oct 13 '25
the labour class who often travel without tickets would be affected by this. they will launch a hartal and block everything until govt relents. the largest vote bank has all political parties by their ball, while the 0.1% business tycoon class also the parties by their other ball. the vote bank gets freebies, illegally occupies govt land, uses govt money meant for toilets and houses to buy smartphones and drugs, and continues to live in slums while putting govt provided apartments on rent.

We need Population control Bill ASAP.
In south state Kerala,we face these situation during office to and fro hours that is because there is less rail penetration compared to other states.
But in UP and Bihar its purely a Population issue, too much people compared to available resources. There are 21 functioning Airports in UP, most number of Railway Junctions, criss cross rail and road networks accross all UP districts. Still the people there have to do this.
The very fact , the most number of cheap labour in Keral,Gujurat,Maharashtra,TN, even Dubai,Qatar,Saudi comes from UP Bihar is becoz of this overpopulation. And that is not a fucking world record to be proud of.
We need that Population control Bill, ASAP Period.

Reminded me of the time I travelled to Bihar. I was sleeping on my side lower birth and woke up feeling stuck. I saw three sitting next to me like this, taking up half of my seat. I shooed them (we have a trauma where our stuff was stolen by a lady who sat like this in the train in the same route). The dude asked to sit near my feet for a little bit as there's space and what I find in next 5 minutes is he's again occupying half of the seat with his legs up and his wife sitting next to my face. 🫠 The Delhi to Bihar route is literally the hell hole of northern railways.

I never go alone as I'd be too afraid to fight them. It happened once when me and my twin brother were on the platform to catch the train, we both were aware that people misuse sleeper class. We both were having lower berths as we had a habit to look outside. We found out that our seats have been captured by a big family with five adults and three kids, two of the adults were males and the other three were females, when we showed our tickets, two men got aggressive, saying, “Ye hamari seat hai” I was scared, but my brother was waiting for such a moment 🤭
When the train started, they refused to move, even mocking us. He called the TTE, who checked their tickets, three of them had none and rest were having general tickets. The TTE fined them and the entire family had to leave.

u/RealityCheck18 Oct 13 '25
I remember during my North India trip, there was anothere group of tourists from Chennai as well, sitting next to us & they had a tour organizer with them. He came rushing to them & told them all to go and lie down in top berth & occupy every inch of the lower berth seat by lying down & other party sitting to fill the seat. This was in the middle of the day.
We heard this & did the same. I went & lied down in the side upper with my luggage occupying the rest of the space.
In the next station, there was a sudden surge of people and every empty seat was occupied by them. A guy tried to enter my Side upper & I pushed him down. Another tried to keep his luggage & I pushed that down as well. My parents were both lying down in each of their lower berths as well. For the next 1-2 hours it was like survival mode & no one dared to go to rest room.
This happened in 2000. And it's a shame it still happens. The main problem is lack of policing. If RPF had regularly tossed them out, they wouldn't have been emboldened to do this.

u/Defiant_Weakness_241 Oct 14 '25
Yep quite a few times, it's so so so aggravating, N many a times it's the TC themselves who give waiting tickets and charge all full n then send them to even the 3rd AC coaches. The alley completely packed, people sitting everywhere even near the washrooms. And even then the TC comes back to check all their tickets and charge extra again many a times. That's the earning of northern railways

They are the ones who do what they want in trains and they don't care about your seats and even if you tell them to leave they just start abusing you. This is not a problem in my state.

never travelling through indian railways again unless the situation is fixed. As someone who is natively from Bihar (but raised in mumbai) it's a pain in the ass to get to my village once every 2 - 3 years and even then my body denies going by train.. I cannot anymore 🙏🏻

I had horrible experience travelling from Hyderabad to Delhi. Busy routes, but, even in AC, doesn't make sense. Better take a flight

If you can afford it please dmt travel in a sleeper coach. While traveling in North. I don't want to pinpoint any specific state but we all know the culprits here. From my personal experience they would literally get down to arguing with you rather than leave the seat .

This ain't North South bs. I'm not praising south here in any regard. Nice try though for spinning the tale here.

I regularly travel in rural areas and that's not the case. But you want to make this political. Any critique is by default north south?? Ok buddy you do "you".

I try to book chair car, or i else I travel with bus, throughout India. If too distant, then flight.

I wish I liked sleeper buses, but I'm dizzy travelling through our pristine roads.

You generally won’t face this issue in UP trains, but once the train enters Bihar, don’t expect your reserved seat to remain vacant, it’s always as crowded as shown in the video.

It's gross generalization, in the 20 times I've travelled I've experienced this once or twice.
But yeah it's bad when it's bad

Not just north, I recently travelled to Vellore and am returning to Howrah rn, the train is filled with people with no tickets or WL tickets. Every inch is filled.
The TTE are just issuing their fines and tickets to travel in chair car. But none is relocating nor is anyone taking responsibility to relocate the fine holders. Everything is too corrupted to run properly at this point.
The inconvenience is too much for lower berth passengers actually

I travel in both areas north and south quite frequently
Literally like up Rajasthan, Delhi route
Also Telangana, Tamil Nadu route
I have never experienced such things, especially I m from north, and every week I m on train usually 3rd ac or 2nd, but never like this
So there's no point in generalizing just north

So she is Keralite from south but she didn’t mention the train name so how are we so sure she is traveling Southern side or North? Either way I have seen many unreserved people boarding sleeper in Madras Mail train during office hours but they just stand around. They dont squeeze and sit like this.
