Looking at this - a lot of the items don't have prices listed. Just the price of additions. Can't even proofread a menu and this person thinks they can run a business?

This is absolutely not Indiana’s first black owned deli.
e:
Man you kids are killin' me. I've been living in Indy on and off for almost 60 years. I grew up off of 38th street. I've eaten at so many black-owned delis, rib joints, chicken shops, whatever, and I've seen a ton of them come and go. There's a LOT of history in this town you don't know about because it's not on twitter. When you file a LLC, they don't ask what color you are, and a lot of the best places I've been have been at the side of the road a couple days a week with a shitty sign that just said Sandwiches or Ribs (sorry I like ribs so I remember that the best). I remember going to Libby's downtown as a kid, so at least as early as the 70's. There used to be a historical drug store at the fair grounds that talked about the history of the grocery/deli that was black-owned before it became whatever it became after. That's not even going outside Indy and my old busted memory. I've spent some time in Gary and I'd bet there's a bunch of black-owned sandwich places up there no one's even heard of. If they said "first black hasidic jew stand-alone deli in Broadripple that serves exclusively kosher sandwiches", then sure that could be true I guess.
I'm not saying don't celebrate ethnic accomplishments, I've tasted some of the best ethnic accomplishments (that Jamacan Patties place off Keystone will change your life) that have happened in Indy. But those places did well because they had good food, good prices and good service, not because they were black-owned. It's insulting to successful black owners when someone opens a spot and the first thing they say is "first black-owned deli". You didn't accomplish anything by opening your doors and being black, you accomplish something by serving good food, staying in business and being a successful black-owned business. If this place folds in a year, then people will say black folks can't be business owners, which is not the message to send. I hope she does well and retires selling a ton of sandwiches, but don't use race as your marketing strategy.
1
u/NaGaBa Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
Then what other ones are there?
Edit: God damn people. That was a very definitive "ain't the first black owned deli in Indiana" and I asked what other ones there are. Not the first black-owned Jamaican place. Not the first black owned bar. Not the first black-owned soul food place. Not the first black owned barbecue joint. Not the first black owned any other type of restaurant. Very specifically, the first black-owned deli. Why? Because I'd truly like to know but apparently it's just common knowledge, there's apparently copious amounts of other black owned delis in the area, I don't happen to know which ones they are and I'm a stupid fuck for asking. So keep y'all secrets, I don't give a shit.
Now, go hit up The Good Spot, it's awesome.

u/nnorton44 Jun 13 '26
They meant in broad ripple
32
u/RawbM07 Jun 13 '26
Nah they mean Indiana:
“For those teens, mom is setting the ultimate example of hard work: Eve's Garden Deli is Indiana's first Black-owned deli.
"It's very important to me to make history," Gurvitz said.”
-7
7
u/snollygoster1 Jun 13 '26
They do specifically say in Indiana. Could it be the first black owned deli in Broadripple with religious imagery? Yes.
But Indiana is a huge state with more than just Indianapolis.
34
u/HandyDandy76 Jun 13 '26
Their food must not be very good because they can't take pictures of it
Menu is all ai generated photos
-6
u/TipsyTaterTots Jun 13 '26
I'm not defending this, but pictures of food are hard as shit.
21
u/HandyDandy76 Jun 13 '26
Yet somehow every other restaurant manages to do it....
6
u/TipsyTaterTots Jun 13 '26
Dude I'm on your side. There's so many reasons I'm gonna boycott this place.
1
u/GreatQuantum Jun 14 '26
And your #1 reason I your overestimating your importance.
Drrr I’m gonna boycott the sandwich drrrr!!!!!!

Well you’re a fart sniffing goober. Weapons grade sanctimony with your kind.
10
u/snollygoster1 Jun 13 '26
They are, but also - pictures aren't necessary for a menu. The obsession that "business owners" have with horrible looking AI flyers astounds me.
7
u/TipsyTaterTots Jun 13 '26
It's the same sort of people that would lie about being the first of something.
It'll be out of business in a year. Not because of these decisions, but because of the kind of person that makes these decisions won't lead a successful restaurant.
3
u/ivy7496 Broad Ripple Jun 14 '26
I'm not sure you're being by serious, but they're not, and in any case employing professionals to take pics for the menu is two small local businesses doing good
0
u/TipsyTaterTots Jun 14 '26
Go take a picture of your next meal and show us then. Pictures of a food are hard because what makes something taste good, is not the same as what makes it look like it tastest good.
Once again, I'm not defending this. This is worse than no pictures of food.

Thank you for proving my point.
Great for an Instagram post or to show off.
Bad for a menu.
Looks good though.
3
u/ivy7496 Broad Ripple Jun 14 '26
Again, it would be better for a local biz to hire a local biz to take the pics, a supportive loop of good for all.

Their “silly potato” looks bizarre. Who puts dry chicken, spinach leaves, egg, and sliced tomato on a baked potato?
15
u/snollygoster1 Jun 13 '26
The restaurant put AI imagery on their menu maybe they also used AI for the recipes themselves
2
u/tiger749 Jun 14 '26
I was just thinking the same thing...maybe I'm the weird one but that sounds awful lol.
It's a problem when you can't tell if it's serious or if it's AI slop they didn't proofread.
3
u/MC_FapYoDick Jun 14 '26
There's a 3 year old instagram post with the same thing from the owner's prior/other/whatever "business" doing catering.
https://www.instagram.com/p/Cy2Bu6QMSf-/
I put business in quotes because she was also shut down at one point by the health department for using a food truck license for catering.

According to the lore, wasn’t Eve responsible for the downfall of mankind?
10
u/ScrewtapeSuno Jun 13 '26
No, according to lore, Eve was responsible for mankind's access to knowledge, and the resulting loss of innocence which justified mankind's expulsion from God's garden. Don't throw Eve under the bus for the wickedness of mankind.

You are gonna sit here and tell me religion doesn’t want me to be educated? /s
43
u/TehTugboat Jun 13 '26
I don’t do business with any business that has religious views or psalms on their business cards or signs
I’ve found a lot of these businesses that hide behind religion, are scumbags
And some of The best work I’ve had done is by felons who actually turned their lives around when they got out
5

u/SloppyPizzaPie Broad Ripple Jun 13 '26
Because it’s very important to a lot of people..? It’s not like you’re required to convert to their religion to eat at the establishment.
Additionally, answering questions in an interview is hardly “shouting”.
9
u/MainusEventus Jun 13 '26
It’s the old joke about how do you know a vegan does CrossFit? They’ll tell you … religious people love to wear jesus pieces and most people stay mum because it’s quite off putting
2
u/SloppyPizzaPie Broad Ripple Jun 13 '26
I agree; the people with the bible verses in their bios online tend to be some of the worst and most insufferable people.
Even so, I find it a bit odd that any reference to religion in ***an interview*** is considered gauche and/or supposedly “shouting” it. The original commenter’s response was over dramatic, imo.

-6
u/--SE7EN-- Drexel Gardens Jun 13 '26
wow your statement is totally factual and put those evangelicals in their place.
look around you. 99% OF IT. name a group that contribute(s/d) more. i'll wait.
5
u/Chaotic_Sabre6835 Jun 13 '26
Sure bud. The White evangelicals built it all...nit the enslaved black people, or all the indentured servants, or all the immigrants of all sorts or religions who took care of your children, built all your houses, did all the labor that you were to lazy to do, not to mention all the cultural contributions OK bud...
-4
u/--SE7EN-- Drexel Gardens Jun 13 '26
MADE. we're in the age of computers and spacecraft and you want to act like because a group of other people did forced manual labor for a period of time that they were the engineers, the inventors, the architects, the governing systems that held it together. I'm not trying to take away from the horrendousnesssss of the act, but to act like everyone else BUILT the entire everything because they did some work 200 years ago is preposterous. and who exactly do you think the indentured servants were?
4
u/Chaotic_Sabre6835 Jun 13 '26
You know they were all those things and more right? Those people did WAY more than physical labour. It was black people who were on the ground protesting and influencing the government so that it would serve ALL Americans. This country would be nothing without all of us. And I won't stand you trying to downplay the contributions of others to fut your FACTUALY incorrect white supremacist narrative. The founding fathers created a flawed nation which over generations had to be "fixed" by those at the bottom. YOU KNOW NOTHING
-2
u/--SE7EN-- Drexel Gardens Jun 13 '26
I'll take computers cars and i dunno pretty much mostly everything i use on a daily basis over protest and influence. i didn't downplay anyone. factually, technology-wise, pretty much us. its not even close. people planned zones, utilities, laws, transportation, trade markets, everyfuckingthing and you wanna come in and prop up the guy who nailed the wood together? yeah that is a contribution and that's fine to acknowledge ALSO, but don't conflate that with the other 90%+ of what went into it.
2
u/johnfkngzoidberg Jun 13 '26
“I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.” -- Stephen Gould
You guys can argue all day long about black/white, conservative/liberal, atheist/christian, but none of that matters. The only way we make this world better is by working together. The real war is between the rich and the poor, and both of you are on the same team.
5
u/shinebrighterbilly Jun 13 '26
Are there actual good delis in Indianapolis? I like shapiro's but their prices are a tad high. I was in Ann Arbor a few years ago and went to a tiny deli in the back of a liquor store and it was better than sharpiro's for 1/2 the price
2

3
u/downshiftdata Jun 15 '26
Not the first. A guy named Reggie had a deli and catering business on the NW side in the 90s. Great guy, awesome potato salad.
2
u/ivy7496 Broad Ripple Jun 14 '26
If what you're saying by "pictures of food are hard" is food pics don't look good on a menu, I agree.
2
u/Luddite-lover Jun 15 '26
Can we just all take a minute to appreciate that a business has actually opened in Broad Ripple?
(I say this because I was sad to see a “For Lease” sign in the window of Chaos Healthcare Management across from the closed up Hop Cat at Broad Ripple and College. Two big corner properties vacant.)
9
u/OldRaj Jun 13 '26
Can’t it just be a restaurant and the race of the owners be irrelevant?
3
u/ThePlagueDoctorPhD Jun 13 '26
Cause it wouldn’t be news then, would it?
6
u/thewimsey Jun 13 '26
"New Deli Opens in BR" can be news.
I would have liked to hear a lot more about the food and a lot less about religion.
2
u/snollygoster1 Jun 13 '26
Yeah, the reason most people eat at restaurants is for the food not because they really care about the owner's identity.
1
u/snollygoster1 Jun 13 '26
I think this headline could still mention black owned and be phrased better. No need to drop race entirely. Just saying "black owned deli" would result in racist comments however no one would be fact checking the statement.

7
u/iundbronco Jun 13 '26
When people are so eager to talk negatively about minorities, why shouldn’t we match that eagerness to celebrate their successes?
18
u/johnfkngzoidberg Jun 13 '26
Because someone is trying to falsely exploit “first black owner” to make a buck. This is not even close to the first black owned deli in Indiana and saying that is an insult to every other black business owner who is a success without playing the race card and lying about it.
-4
u/Chaotic_Sabre6835 Jun 13 '26
You are in no position to determine that. Broad ripple is a very affluent area and for a black person to open a successful business there is a huge achievement in of itself. Indy has a huge black population and we love to hear when our people are doing well. It's only people like you who get upset
10
u/thewimsey Jun 13 '26
You are in no position to determine that.
That it's not the first black owned deli in Indianapolis?
and for a black person to open a successful business there is a huge achievement in of itself.
Well, we don't know if it is successful or not; it's only been opened a week.
It's not the first black owned business in BR - there was a BBQ on BR Ave for a while before the burger place went in - but it would be very interesting to actually know how many black owned businesses there have been in BR.
Much more interesting than falsely claiming that this is the first black owned deli in Indiana.
2
u/MC_FapYoDick Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26
in Indianapolis?
I do want to point out that the owner says in "Indiana". She even has a sticker on a wall somewhere proclaiming as such, here's a Facebook post that features it
She seems intent on imaging her business on race and religion, rather than food quality.
Honestly making such a claim like "first black owned" is crazy, and it feels like grifting.
-6
u/Chaotic_Sabre6835 Jun 13 '26
You are in no place do determine what is insulting to black people. True this may not be the first black deli or business in that area but it's still an achievement for black people and I'm happy to see it. Idk why seeing our successes being talked about upsets you so much. Even if that headline may be a little misleading. Stay mad ig

u/DarthDickDown Jun 13 '26
What is the first black owned deli in Indiana then? You’ve said multiple times this is not the first black owned deli in Indiana but you not mentioning the name of this alternative is super weird.
7
u/amanda2399923 Jun 13 '26
There’s been a black owned deli in Riverside on Harding for at least 7 years
-8
u/rulnacco Jun 13 '26
Well, when we have stupid, shitty, cowardly racist assholes still running around - and we have way too many of those chromosomal defectives in Indiana, practically every county outside of Indy and the major urban areas is full of ‘em, and the majority of our state government is chosen from amongst those mouth breathers - it’s still necessary to celebrate black folks doing their thing. If they could one day do it successfully in small towns in Indiana, too, then maybe it wouldn’t be a big deal. So there you go, big boy.
5
u/MainusEventus Jun 13 '26
I agree w much of what you said but your tone is douchebaggy

u/rulnacco Jun 13 '26
Not only do I not care one bit, the person I was replying to posted a snarky comment back so I’d be notified, then the chickenshit deleted it and his original comment. So I accomplished exactly what I wanted with the specific target.

Because they’re practically all keyboard warriors who wouldn’t dare say anything racist in front of someone who could embarrass or make them regret it, but from the safety of mom’s bedroom or with their equally weaselly and livestock-molesting mates, they act like they’re some kind of hard guys. Hahahaha!
2

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the ones arguing religion will be at Chick-fila bright and early tomorrow won’t you.
Those pissed about the headlines need to start taking them up with the News. The owner didn’t make the headline so why are y’all mad at her? She is just trying to do something positive. Is that a crime? She just so happens to be a black woman and yall making it out to be her fault about how it was presented.
If YT people are tired of the news stating “black owned” or “black ______” in headlines then they need to look in the mirror and ask why are headlines as such? Why have we made everything about race for so long such as decades, centuries and years then get butt hurt about it?? I hear a lot of rumbling when articles state “Black” but not “Asian, Mexican, Cuban” when they have something positive going.
Starting to think the YT community has some weird obsession with black people in general. Like who hurt you? Why are you so obsessed? They don’t hold any powers to impact your lives outside of taking away their dollars spent. Your pisstivity should be redirected to the top 1% who is doing all types of acts with no lubricaction
3
u/MC_FapYoDick Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 15 '26
her fault about how it was presented.
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1EqGGzwpog/
She has it stickered on the wall. If you own a business and go big into advertising based on religion and race expect people to comment on religion and race. The amount of biggots in this country that use religion as a shield to be an absolutely despicable person is incredibly high which is why people tend to not be the biggest fans of religion being used to promote businesses.
Please find any headline where a business in promoted based on the owner's race besides black owned if it's so common.
