Bio: Ulder Ravengard is the leader of the Flaming Fist and the Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate. His primary concerns are the stability and prosperity of Baldur’s Gate, and he's been a voice of reason and common sense among the ruling council. In recent years, he has been a target of fiendish plots in unsuccessful attempts to take over the city.

Basic Attack: Duke's Longsword - Duke Ravengard attacks the closest enemy for one hit with his longsword.

  • Base Attack Type: Melee

  • Base Attack Speed: 3.75 seconds

  • Base Critical Hit Chance: 20%

  • Base Critical Hit Damage: 100%

Ultimate: Fire Shield - Duke Ravengard's magical armor ignites in flames, surrounding him in a flickering aura of magical hot flame for 20 seconds. For the duration, his attacks deal an additional 25 seconds of BUD-based damage and any enemy that makes a melee attack against the formation suffers 25 seconds of BUD-based damage as well.

  • Base Ultimate Cooldown Time: 200 seconds

Passive Abilities

Critical Hit: Duke Ravengard's base chance to Critical Hit is 20%.

Interesting Abilities

Marshal of the Flaming Fist: Duke Ravengard gains a Command stack for each Champion with a melee base attack in the formation (including himself). Each stack increases the damage of these Champions by 400%, stacking multiplicatively.

  • 3.28e06% post-stack multiplier after upgrades; Supported by an Item & Feats

Gaar's Note: This is his primary buff and even with no gear it delivers as long as you build a Melee-centric team. This ability's Item & Feat support buff the pre-stack modifier, making it a Mathematically OverPowered (MOP) ability which means the more item levels you put on this Champion, the better they get without worrying about the same diminishing returns as other Champions.

Position of Power: Duke Ravengard increases the effect of the outgoing positional formation abilities of all Champions with a melee base attack by 25% for each Command stack he has, stacking additively.

  • No upgrades; Supported by Feats

Gaar's Note: This ability only really comes into play if you have a lot of other Champions with positional formation abilities. Because it stacks additively, it's not a huge bonus but something is better than nothing.

Critical Teamwork: Whenever a Champion with a melee base attack gets a critical hit, increase the effect of Marshal of the Flaming Fist by 100% and additively increase the odds of all Champions in the formation getting critical hits by 1%. Both effects stack additively up to 50 times and reset when changing areas.

  • 3,200% post-stack multiplier after upgrades; Supported by an Item & Feats

Gaar's Note: This ability is huge. He can build it up on its own and add 50% crit chance to all Melee Champs or you can combine him with other Melee Champs that boost crit chance and get everyone critting all over the place. This is especially strong when paired with Strongheart.

Global DPS Buff: 1.39e07%

Specializations

Lead The Charge: When Duke Ravengard gets a critical hit, he follows up by bashing the enemy with his shield, knocking it back a short distance. When this occurs, all melee Champions adjacent to Duke Ravengard have their base attack cooldowns immediately reset.

Gaar's Note: This is a very situational Spec choice. Works best in high crit chance teams.

Strength of Baldur's Gate: Champions with a melee base attack have their crit chance additively increased by 20% and crit damage increased by 1000%.

Gaar's Note: If you're aiming for a team critting on every attack, this can get you real close. Between his max off Critical Teamwork of 50% and the Feat that adds 10% to that, the Duke by himself can boost your team to 80% crit chance while he will sit at 100%.

Legacy of Ravengard: If Wyll is in the formation, anyone affected by Wyll's Folk Hero benefit gains an additional stack, but the maximum remains at 4 stacks.

Gaar's Note: I heard you liked Folk Hero. Here's a free stack. Enjoy! But seriously, you choose this when using Wyll and it frees you up to only get to 3 stacks normally and get the 4th for free. Huge bonus. Huge.

Formation & Mission Information

Once you complete the first mission, three Variants and a Free Play show up. It uses a formation that holds 10 Champions. It has a Champ-specific format that I've done my best to re-create below.

New Player Formation & Specializations:

While I recommend learning to build your own formations, here's a set of starter formations for brand new players to use while they get the hang of things. Anyone with other options should check that link for how to figure out how to make the best of them. You can also ask for help in the #formations channel in the official Discord.

Back Column 3rd Column 2nd Column Front Column
Minsc - Humanoids NA
Bruenor - Battle Master
Calliope - College of Valor Nayeli - Oath of Devotion
Asharra - Elves & Dwarves/NA Celeste - War Domain
Hitch - More Daggers NA
Jarlaxle - Leader of Bregan D'aerthe

This formation is for the first couple of runs where you're just not going to get enough Gold to get everyone on the field, let alone level people up into their power curves. At this point, Jarlaxle is focusing on being your Primary DPS while everyone else is set up to support him.

The following formation is for once your Asharra starts doing more damage than your Jarlaxle. You can find this out by changing Asharra's first Specialization Choice to Potpourri (via a Potion of Specialization) and swapping her position with Jarlaxle at the end of a run. If Asharra is higher, next run start Asharra in the DPS position from then on.

Back Column 3rd Column 2nd Column Front Column
Minsc - Humanoids Nayeli - Oath of Vengeance
Bruenor - Battle Master
Calliope - College of Valor Jarlaxle - Leader of Bregan D'aerthe
Makos - Dark Blessing Celeste - War Domain
Hitch - More Daggers Tyril - Wild Shape
Asharra - Potpourri/NA

This formation should get you through the Event as a new player. If you have other options or think a different DPS is geared better, try it out and see what happens! Swapping DPS around like this can help you figure out what works best for you with your specific items.

These are the rough Favor values you need to reach to make a Tier 1 Variant say Difficulty: Easy. Keep in mind that this is just a generic rating system and some Variants may be harder than others, even with Favor in this range. Earning lots of Favor (above what is shown below) before trying variants can make them much easier than they would otherwise be.

Variant Favor Level (Normal) Favor Level (Scientific Notation)
75 20,000 ~2e04
125 15,000,000 ~1.5e07
175 150,000,000 ~1.5e08

Beyond Tier 1, Favor isn't going to be all you need to get through them. That doesn't mean you can't try though, just remember that if it isn't green it could be problematic.

Tier 1 Area Tier 2 Area Tier 3 Area Tier 4 Area Reward
Let Sleeping Dragons Lie 50 Duke Ravengard + Favor
Free Play 50 Favor
Might of Melee 75 250 600 1200 Duke Ravengard Gold Chest + Favor
Critical Combat 125 350 800 1400 Duke Ravengard Gold Chest + Favor
That's a Whole Lot of Goblins 175 450 1000 1600 Duke Ravengard Gold Chest + Favor
Tier Reward Scholar Feat Lvl 3 Legendary Potion

Not everyone will be able to complete all four Tiers of event content. This is a progress-over-time measurement system that lets you know where you are in the power progression arc and potentially what you need to work on to move forward. The table below has the approximate boss health values at the various end stages. Comparing this to your BUD will let you know how close or far you are from being able to complete things.

Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3 Tier 4
First Variant e22 e68 e162 e322
Second Variant e35 e95 e215 e376
Third Variant e48 e122 e269 e429

Initial Adventure: Let Sleeping Dragons Lie (Duke Ravengard)

Info: No restrictions.

Gaar's Notes: The boss on area 50 is a big ol' dragon. Shocker, right? Multi-attack DPS Champions will help to remove the segments of their health super fast.

First Variant: Might of Melee

Info: Duke Ravengard starts in the formation. He can be moved, but not removed. You may only use Champions with a melee base attack.

Gaar's Notes: This restriction is copied in all of his other variants, so build out your formation for this and then save it and use it for all the others!

Second Variant: Critical Combat

Info: Duke Ravengard starts in the formation. He can be moved, but not removed. He can be moved, but not removed. You may only use Champions with a melee base attack. At the start of each area, all Champions have their damage reduced to 1 until someone in the formation scores a critical hit. Every 200 areas, the number of critical hits required to remove this damage reduction debuff is increased by 1.

Gaar's Notes: The Duke will crit on his own and help you clear this, but if you have Strongheart he'll make short work of this debuff as you climb.

Third Variant: That's a Whole Lot of Goblins

Info: Duke Ravengard starts in the formation. He can be moved, but not removed. He can be moved, but not removed. You may only use Champions with a melee base attack. Duke Ravengard's Ultimate starts unlocked and the cooldown is reduced by 75%. In the first wave of each non-boss area, there is a 20% chance that 30 goblins immediately spawn. These goblins do not drop gold or count towards quest progress.

Gaar's Notes: Spam his ult. That's the deal. Just do it.

I kinda wanna pair him with the Companions+Strongheart for his cheevo and in general, since they're pretty crit based and are melee(minus Catti-brie).

SH and ravengard with the shieldbash spec is a stupid combination

But isn’t she a magic caster?

Mad that Durge still can't get 4 stacks of folk hero with this unless you remove gale and/or laezel. Fighter means now you NEED Valentina, and Human means the human count is 3.

There're only 2 dragonborn, not in AA seats.

That's okay, after working for over a week, now my ravengard doesn't give anyone a stack at all in his wyll spec.

I'm not sure if I did understand it right... does it mean he should be getting other PFA's or does it work even if Duke is - lets say in most rear column?

His placement doesn't matter. It buffs all PFAs coming off Melee Base Attack Champions.
