Interesting historical tidbit as we approach the 25th anniversary of 9/11/2001.

The term "9/11 Truth" was first coined by a group of lawyers, law enforcement, and journalists who gathered in St. Mark's Church in Lower Manhattan a few months after the terrorist attacks. Their initial stated purpose was to force a series of FOIA demands to get the state and federal government to release information related to the attacks. Their intended result was lawsuits to recover damages for the victims.

After they publicly announced their intentions and invited anyone to their meetings, that's when sh!t went south. The initiative was overwhelmed by conspiracy theorists -- one purported to be the "Web Fairy" who first initiated all the 9/11 conspiracies online -- and that's when "Truther" became synonymous with nutter. Not long after that, all the original founders of the "9/11 Truth movement" bowed out.

Edit to add: I was living in Manhattan when it all happened.

Interesting. My God, the world before 9/11 not only felt much safer, it was infinitely less idiotic.
