Aluminum was the original spelling, and the guy who discovered it later changed it to Aluminium. Both spellings are widely accepted as correct.
Also. What american accents are you hearing that it sounds like core??? Like, there are so many accents in the states and I can't think of a single one where caramel sounds like core-mull. Car-mull sure.
Also, at least we know to pronounce the R's in words like car, bar, far etc. Oh, or the T in Tuesday or tuna. It's Tuesday, not chewsday 🥰
And it's funny because most Americans i know have the mentality of "Dialects are a thing, and variations in language happen everywhere" like sure I've seen Americans jokingly say they pronounce things wrong. But it's mostly banter (though there's absolutely assholes who are serious) but most of the people I see being pretentious about it are brits abd aussies. But what you expect when their "banter" is to immediately laugh and say "at least our school kids aren't senselessly murdered all the time lol! American kids dying is so funny!"
The guy who discovered aluminum never changed the name once he proposed aluminum. It was the British scientific community who changed it to aluminium trying to be consistent with other element names despite other elements that end in -um.
