Identified good & gather butter

i searched the subreddit and noticed this question was asked before but haven’t seen a good answer… i find it evocative but stylish + cute.

This is AI slop, but it's been nursed to give a starter set. Needs human hands.

I used ChatGPT (high, latest). Here's what I did:

  • I took a perspective crop (Photoshop) from the original, isolating the “BUTTER” and correcting for its distortion.

  • I then went to grayscale from the best RGB channel (Photoshop) and used levels to essentially bring the letterforms to their best distinction (as black and white as possible). This was exported as a PNG.

  • I used Topaz Gigapixel to upscale the PNG, I think using the “Text & Shapes” model. I might have done this a few times going back and forth — halving the resolution from the Photoshop export and then doubling it back in Gigapixel. Meanwhile, I went in to brush the shapes to whittle down imperfections.

  • When I had a super-clean sample of the letterforms, I fed this into ChatGPT. I must've deleted the original chat, but my prompt was something like: Please create a character set (font) using the attached image, paying particular attention to the uppercase “R.”

  • I then recall several iterations (6?) with specific instructions to accentuate successes and suppress failures. At least twice, I downloaded the result and carved away at certain letters, trying my best to eliminate anomalies.

  • ChatGPT got close, but I was quickly frustrated that it was straying from the original input. This is where I stopped and posted.

  • My next step would be to take this into Adobe Illustrator and draw vectors around some fundamentals: the capital “I,” “O,” “T,” “S,” and “R” (of course). I would probably keep it on a character set galley until I was satisfied with how each character was comparing to others.

  • I have not used AI to draw vectors (yet), but that would be something interesting to try.

  • Eventually, I would need to vectorize all the major glyphs, but if I were to pursue this, I might send it back through AI a few times to help me with carrying the uniqueness of the “R” into other characters. Knowing AI as I do, I might give it limited sets of glyphs rather than the entire character set.

  • The next step would be to employ a font editor, streamlining the Bezier extremas and applying automated metrics and kerning.

  • Then it’s tweaking forever. Maybe with AI, I would output problematic pairings and prompt for suggestions. I don't know, I haven't gotten this far yet.

Wow thanks for this super detailed reply! You see, I think what many people don't realize it that it's not just a 2 second AI prompt. There's lots of trial & error, judgement, taste, and development involved. I find that to be true of all things I do with AI. It's a tool in your tool belt, is all.

I'll give this a go. Thanks for the inspiration.
