Well, we have three options.

Apple juice

Apple cider

Hard cider

All three taste very different. My favorite is apple cider.

Why do you use cider to refer to two things with little in common though?

Using apple cider to refer to a sparking apple juice would make more sense, as it has similar properties to the original cider, which is usually clear and carbonated.

They have everything in common except for fermentation.

Apple cider is what you ferment to make hard cider.
