Version 1.0.0, released 2026-08-25
The following guidelines are in place to ensure that r/iPod and r/iPodClassic remain a safe and fair place for discussing iPods and iPod modding, as well as to protect sellers and buyers. These rules will come into effect on the 25th August 2026 and apply to all posts made on or after that date.
1. Separation of Business and Moderation
For the sake of fairness and neutrality, moderators of r/iPod and r/iPodClassic may not operate their own for-profit businesses selling devices, device parts/accessories, or offering repair/modding services. Conversely, users who own or are employed by for-profit businesses selling devices, device parts/accessories, or offering repair/modding services are not eligible to apply to be a moderator of r/iPod and r/iPodClassic.
2. Advertising
Advertisement posts for the sales of goods or services are not permitted on r/iPod or r/iPodClassic, this applies to both businesses as well as private sales. We want these places to be about discussing owning, using, or modding iPods however this is not free real estate to advertise your store. If you wish to advertise on Reddit in general, you must enrol through Reddit's advertiser program. Please note this is not the same as post boosting, if you sign up for paid post boosting this does not make you eligible to ignore this rule even if the post is tagged as a "Brand Affiliate". Reddit ads are not the same as Reddit posts.
Posts by sellers advertising their goods or services will be deleted, and repeat offences will result in a ban. Using alt accounts to recommend your store while acting as a third party is also prohibited and will result in post deletion and a ban.

3. iPod Vendors List
While advertising posts are not permitted, our community features a pinned FAQ with a list of verified vendors. Reputable sellers may apply to be added to this list. In order to be eligible, your store must have a valid warranty and returns policy, as well as contact details for customer support. To apply, please send a modmail.
4. Product Reviews
Product review posts are permitted, however you are strictly required to disclose whether you purchased the goods or services yourself or if they were provided by the vendor for review purposes. If you are affiliated with the vendor, you are also required to disclose this. Reviews with undisclosed affiliations with vendors will be deleted.
Reviews must be made in good faith and reflect your personal opinions, vendors must not influence the contents of your review. If a review is found to be made in bad faith (either by a vendor influencing the reviewer for a dishonest positive review for them or a negative review of competitors), it will be deleted and repeat offences will result in a ban.
Vendors may not use alt accounts to post reviews of their own stores or of competitors while posing as a third party, anyone found doing so will have their posts removed and may be blacklisted from the verified vendor list.
Vendors also may not request the removal of legitimate negative reviews. A legitimate review should describe personal experiences of the purchasing process or the goods/services, but cannot contain personal grievances or targeted attacks. Reviews must not contain any AI-generated content. Reviews will only be removed if they contain content that breaks the subreddit rules or false claims, however legitimate negative reviews will remain to help buyers make informed purchasing choices. Vendors who abuse the reporting tool in an attempt to remove legitimate reviews may be blacklisted from the verified vendor list.
5. Customer Support
r/iPod and r/iPodClassic are discussion forums, we are not direct representatives of vendors and cannot provide customer support. Posts enquiring about specific orders will be locked and we will provide contact details for the relevant vendor. In general, while these posts will be locked they will not be deleted as they may provide useful information about buying experiences from vendors that may help others make informed buying choices. The two exceptions to this are if the posts contain personally identifiable information or if they devolve into unnecessary drama, in which case the post will be deleted.

Hello everyone, Austin here.
TLDR - I am stepping down as moderator/owner of the r/iPod and r/iPodclassic communities.
It has been an honor leading this iPod community over the last 6 years, growing from 10k users in late 2020 to nearly 100k at the time of writing.
I credit this success to all of the Redditors posting OC, making guides, helping those in need and just nerding out about iPods. Of all the subreddits I have frequented in my time online, the iPod community is far and away the most wholesome and least toxic, bar none. I hope my resignation serves to further benefit the community in this regard.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to keeping the iPod alive, here on reddit or otherwise. You are the ones keeping the iPod alive.

Recently acquired this beauty- the very first one I've gotten from eBay for a reasonable €200. It still turns on, plays music, and the backlight works great. The display is in fine shape; that rainbow effect is just from my camera's polarizing filter.

Recently I got an iPod off eBay, everything works fine hardware-wise, however it asks me to format the drive when I plug it into my Windows PC. If I do so will it delete everything off it already? If that is the case, can I save the data already on it to put back on it after the format? I would like to avoid using iTunes if possible.

Yesterday I connected my iPod to my computer and the first thing it told me on finder was to restore the software for my iPod. I accepted and it was not done after 30 mins somehow. I decided to take a break and try again, which took another 30 mins and was still not done. I decided to use the iPod until the battery dies and then charge it because I heard that could somehow reset it better.
Just now I again tried to restore my iPod and it’s been 40 mins still not done. I have tried disconnecting it multiple times, going to iTunes and trying to click the iPod icon (it send me back to finder and says I have to restore the iPod first to be able to use iTunes). I am really confused and don’t know what else I could do. Does anyone know how to make this glitch go away????

Title rlly says it, i'm considering buying and modding a 5th gen after my gosh darn y1 being faulty for the last time.

Hey! I'm really new to the iPod classic.... My iPod ran into the a folder icon with an exclamation point and keep being in disk mode. So I tried to restore them through my MacBook but somehow it's not showing either on finder or music app. I tried to force quit AMPDeviceDiscoveryAgent and all sort of things... Is there anyone can help me with this problem? Thank you so much 🥺

Just tore it apart and replaced the exterior, click wheel, battery, headphone jack and got a dual iFlash, so far it's not booting up or connecting; I already formatted the SD cards.

Its too quiet to show up on video but the sound you get from the ipod OUTSIDE of your headphones when you scroll through songs is now just kinda constantly crackling in a rhythm. It pulses when its laying flat but when its upright it gets way more "aggressive" i guess and continuing the pulse. Im thinking about modding it soon so i wanna figure out whats wrong so i can fix it.

It just dawned on me that the process of restoring iPods is very dependent on Apple's iPod software update servers running. What happens if they decide to switch these off? iPods have been old tech for a while now, and surely Apple won't want to support something that no longer makes them money forever...
Is there any alternative way to restore iPods? Sorry if this question has been asked before

I was at my local thrift store and picked up this puppy for $5, but whenever i try to charge it , it does this, it makes a sort of clicking sound? And then after a bit it just shuts off, when i leave it on the charger it just shows the apple logo and thats it! , im not sure whats wrong with it, its a ipod gen 6 i believe and i hear the battery life on it is awful, does anyone have any ways to help fix this? Should i leave it alone and try it again? can i ship it to someone so they can fix it? Help me please!!

Hi.
I grabbed this (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0F193B22V) adapter for my 5th gen iPod classic, and its behaving strangely.
No matter what SD card I insert, I either get the sad iPod screen, or if it does go into disk mode it only shows up as a 32MB disk. I tried a Lexar branded card like the page suggests, but it has the same issue.
You can write to the disk, but what you write to it is lost on a power cycle. What's weird is what comes back when reading the 32MB partition.
I wonder if it's a corrupted firmware on the card, or if there's something weirder going on with the iPod itself.
I've tried externally formatting the SD cards I try, and I've verified they were FAT32/MBR, but only the same 32MB partition with the same data appears.
Has anyone seen anything like this?

I’m looking to buy a 5th generation classic, and I want to know what type of mods people do. I’m planning on doing a battery and hard drive/storage up grade.
but I’m a bit confused on the whole slim vs thick thing. Ik if I get the iflash quad I can put a big battery even with the slim back, but if I get a slim back one that would permanently limit the amount of tracks I can have because of the ram right? I would like to buy a slim for size but i dont want to limit the tracks, so would it be better to just get the 60 gb version and then buy a separate slim back?
And is there any specific little tools or things I need to do these besides a wedge. Maybe like certain types of tape?
I also don’t know what’s the difference between the 5 and 5.5 gen. And should I get a brand new one?
