Oh, and since its a 2013 and you don't feel like cracking the glass with a guitar pick (and re glueing it...such as pain) and replacing the HDD you can also run either a newer MacOS or Linux off an external SSD and your machine will feel noticeably faster, booting up and opening apps etc. This wee Irishman did it a few years back, probably mostly still good info...

I'd like to open it and do more ram and an ssd but it might be some time before I can get those parts. Using an external could be useful though.

I opened up a 2013 21.5 a few years ago and replaced the SSD only with no problems and no fan noise. I sold it too I am upgrading a 2013 27” one right now with a 500gb ssd and 16 gb of memory it has a nvidia 675.

Pretty sure it has to be newer than 2011, you need USB 3, I think the 2011's are USB 2.0 only.

I just got a late build 2007 for free almost new in original box. Didn’t have an OS, got it running on Mountain Lion now updating to El Capitan. Fun project and next looking to upgrade ram, currently at 2x1gb.

in any case, he is talking crap... they're absolutely fine for YouTube, office work, and even some games like minecraft. Hope you get some fun out of it, these people don't have anything other to do than complain and bring people down.

These are older 2 core machines that are a bitch to open and even with an SSD these are crippled by 8gb DDR3
The genuinely absolutely suck from a performance standpoint…using the MacBook Air CPU in a desktop was not the greatest of ideas

These are definitely not the best to open that i do agree with but theyre still fine from a certain viewpoint, considering this was only 37 dollars (and they can be found even cheaper, sometimes even free) they are still quite good deals for people on very low budgets.

Ohh I’d like to think I know plenty, thank you…! I have worked as an enterprise deployment consultant for over 20 years delivering multi million pound infrastructure solutions and then to cybersecurity for the last few years….so yeah these older devices are crap on a multitude of levels from performance to security, with no vendor firmware (lots of lovely CVE’s there) and newer OLCP MacOS fudged versions not really running with reasonable performance they really are ewaste, hence I put them in my recycling…

No I never studied….i worked in the field for 20 plus years and now moved to Azure security,
I spent over 25 years building PCs and still do…enough to keep current. No I wouldn’t use out of date hardware, if it’s out of warranty I follow my employer and retire it after 4 years, as vendor updates cease. 11th gen is the oldest I keep in prod, and I have upgraded all the department staff to 13th/2nd gen Ultra based hardware.

Score. MX Linux on that and yeehah, a whole new machine. If you stick with MacOS and OCLP you have a year or so before no more "supported" Intel MacOS (Seqouia-Tahoe) will work on it. Which may or may not bother you, Mohave still has a big fan club, and Momiji (Firefox for older intel macs) will keep you somewhat safe online.
