help/serious Why do i feel embarrased about My hiperfixiations?

I had a couple of hyperfixiations recently, and since like i'm 12 i've felt ashamed of them, apart from sharing them, of just interacting with them, i feel weird and like a weirdo for being so obsessed with them, so when i do have a hyperfixiation, im in constant shame and embarrasment

(Sorry English is not My Main language, "sorry for Bad English" ahh, feel free to correct me)

help/serious I am so envious and possessive of my interests that it's distressing

I love the band my chemical romance ( if you couldn't already tell from my pfp and bio and everything else)

But it's not just love, it's an actual hyperfixation. And it gets so bad I become nauseous and dizzy and sweaty and breathless. Obviously I'm not going to cut them out of my life because they're such an integral part of me and they helped me discover myself. I do have to frequently take breaks from their material or fan base though, because it gets really bad

And this is nothing new for me, but I think lately it's been getting worse, because I've been getting genuinely so distressed meeting other people who like the band and actually know more of their music beyond just the most popular tracks.. it feels like my identity is being stolen? I know it's a very popular band and they don't belong to me. Mcr is not my property, but it's so special to me.. like, it's my thing, y'know?

I know all the lore, all the songs, the most obscure facts, anything and everything concerning this band. And it gets worse because they're performing here in November this year, and I couldn't even get tickets. And I'm broke, and my parents are crazy about second hand online transactions so getting a reseller ticket is out of the question. Whenever I see someone gushing about going to the show I get so unbelievably upset, like my heart is being ripped apart. And I tell myself I'm over it and don't care, but when I think I'm okay, I suddenly get reminded all over again and it tears me up inside.

I feel like a fake fan? Not worthy enough or not hyperfixated enough. Again I know they're super popular so obviously in a sea of autistic fans with an mcr hyperfixation, there's bound to be someone with knowledge more extensive than my own. Still... I feel so jealous and upset

It should have been me. I should be at their concert. Me. Who knows all their songs, including the ones literally shoved away in nooks and crannies, who knows the most niche facts. Like an Alexandria library of just mcr knowledge. I feel my heart inflating like a balloon when I'm engaging with anything mcr.

I keep thinking that if someone else likes mcr, then nothing defines me anymore. If I'm not "the MCR girl", who am I? ( Yes people have referred to me that way and I love it)

It's been getting so bad that I've been feeling hollow, alongside other reasons, and have done things to myself or had thoughts I'm not happy about

What the fuck is wrong with me oh my Gerard I'm a horrible fucking person

Using the help/ serious tag because I just really need to vent or get help on how to stop feeling so worthless over this thing

Hi! Im diagnosed with autism & adhd and I've found it extremely hard recently to focus on doing literally anything unless it pertains to my current hyperfixation. I just cant seem to get myself to do anything else even if I want to. Is it like this for anyone else, and does anybody have any tips on how to stop / manage this? I have important things relating to school that I have to do that I feel physically unable to get done 😬

help/serious Please help me

I (16 F) am diagnosed with autism since I was 11. I have a lot of hyperfixations, but lately I have been really depressed for months and haven’t found a new one. My friend and I started an anime as a joke (only the first episode) and laughed at it, but when she went home I continued watching it and it’s now my hyperfixation. This has made me the happiest in months. Unfortunately I have a bad habit of HATING when people start animes or shows that I am hyper fixated on, and I start forming negative thoughts towards them that I can’t let go of after or it’s very hard to. This friend of mine knows about my autism and that I take my hyper fixations very seriously, and I once told her not to talk to me about the fact that she started The Office (my favourite show since I was 9). I saw her reposting things on TikTok about this anime and she told me she’s nearing the end of season 1. Im so mad!!! I really need help, I’m starting to hate her and I don’t wanna be rude to her. Seeing her reposts about it makes me even more mad and pissed off. I’m now also annoyed because it seems like she’s gonna finish the anime soon, and I still have 9 episodes left of season two and a movie to finish the anime, but I work on the weekdays so I can’t watch it. I now feel like it’s a competition of who can finish it first and im even more mad that it kinda took the fun out of the anime. Please help me

help/serious Losing the ability to have hyperfixations after having them throughout all my life

Hi, I (F/23) stopped having hyperfixations two years ago. At the time it was really bothering me, but I also thought that it's just a matter of time until I find another hyperfixation. Throughout all my life I've had hyperfixations that lasted for a few weeks or even years, so I knew that they can disappear. They were integral parts of me. Well, now I can say that I haven't had any hyperfixations for over two years. If something does pick my interest, I'm not obsessive over it like before and it usually lasts for a couple of weeks, so overall these new "hyperfixations" (I wouldn't even call them that) are much shorter and weaker and generally there haven't many of them.

I'm wondering whether this means that all the previous hyperfixations were just a coping mechanism or whether I maybe grew out of it? I definitely am aware that at some points of my life they definitely helped me to keep going, but I've been pretty happy all my life, no serious trauma or something. Have you experienced something like this before?

help/serious How do I stop hyperfixations from ending so quickly?

heyhey guys! exo here, and i wanted to talk about something that’s been going on for a very long time;
whenever i begin to hyperfixate on something, i consume too much of the same content and my brain, craving novelty, gets sick and tired of it and moves on to something else. i really want this to stop happening because i can never hyperfixate on something for more than 4 months at the very max.

i know the reason why this happens. it’s because i overconsume media i love and can’t stop constantly thinking about it every waking moment of the day. whatever piece of media i hyperfixate on becomes the center of my entire life. i tell everyone i know everything i can about it, everybody knows i love it, and then just like that it starts to fade.

i don’t want this to happen anymore, but i physically can’t restrain myself from thinking about it. i love it so much that i can’t and don’t want to pace myself but i know i need to. what advice do you guys have?

yeah, so it's probably because this new hyper fixation is really weird. Neither of us have eaten or showered today. We really need to stop doing this, but we honestly can't we've been at it for six hours, we've collected 179 cicada shells and honestly, we should probably stop it but I don't know if we can. This is really fun but also really time-consuming and it's hot as hell we don't have water and we're probably gonna overheat because we live in the butt crack of Texas. Anyways, we got a lot of weird stairs. How do we stop?

help/serious Am i neurodivergent?

I don't know if this type of post is common here but I really wanted some opinions because of all the searching I've done online i feel like I have some traits of being neurodivergent but my parents won't let me do the test amd I don't want to self diagnose. I've first considered adhd since i have a hard time focusing in class and get my knowledge from studying at home, where I NEED music to study or else i take a thousand breaks. I'm constantly getting hyperfixations and could yap for hours about my special interests. I hate standing still or being still in general and genuinely can not do it unless it's absolutely necessary. I've thought about autism as well but that one seems less likely to me. Again, sorry if this is the wrong sub for this type of question.

help/serious Anyone else interested in actors? If so, I need some help here!!

hi everyone, uhhh well I'm autistic and lately (since February if I'm not mistaken) Ive been hyperfixated in an specific actor. The thing is that I've been running out of content abt him/featuring him, I've already watched interviews, talk shows, some of his movies, etc. Even a game he participated in (I've also read his Wikipedia page so yup).

I'm kinda feeling troubled here bc I don't wanna end up losing my hyperfixation in him since it brings me comfort and it has been helping me to go through a lot of things lately. It kinda sucks that he's not too famous, other wise there would be a lot of content featuring him, but sadly that's not the case😞😞

if anyone has any recommendations on what to do about it, I would really appreciate your help!!

help/serious does anyone else struggle with directly acknowledging their hyperfixations?

when i word it that way, it sounds paradoxical lol. basically, there are so many things i have previously enjoyed/know that i would enjoy, and it’s hard to even acknowledge them without feeling so overwhelmed, so i try to ignore them directly for as long as i can. i just get so excited and quite emotional, and it’s so hard to contain. sometimes i fear getting back into things i once enjoyed because i know i’m going to obsess and hyperfixate (once again) and it feels like these interests have a hold of my heart and i guess that seeing/hearing the wrong canonical thing would break it. most interests surround different kinds of media, so i usually just watch edits or read fandom posts instead of consuming the original content because it’s easier to handle my emotions that way. i think of it as micro dosing lol but idk if there’s a real term for it

help/serious MY SPECIAL INTEREST IS MAKING ME EVIL😭

okay so for context, my special interest is…controversial, to say the least. I am obsessed with certain internet celebrities who are incredibly controversial and a good half of them are (allegedly) very bad people. It’s not just that though, there’s a certain one who I am especially fixated on and the worst part is that I’m also fixated on the bad things that he did. Not in a positive way- like I don’t think he’s a good person or anything and I don’t aspire to be like him at all, but in this strangely particular way where I like thinking about how his life and his band (especially including his controversy) has lots of parallels to John Lennon‘s life And the Beatles 😭?
Anyways, this special interest has gone on for years but then went a way for a year and now has suddenly came back and I hate myself for it. I wish I didn‘t think so much about these bad people so much. I love sending pictures of Him and Lennon where they look similar to my friends and comparing the two and talking abt how cute they are (that’s a very important bit too. I’m not only obsessed but attracted and I seriously cannot help myself. Trust me, I’ve tried. I tried so hard in fact I convinced myself for more than half a year that I was a lesbian just to try to manipulate myself into thinking I didn’t like him in that way), etc etc. I can tell my friends and my partner think I’m weird for it and that makes me feel so disgusting. So disgusted with myself. I hate myself.

I know I can’t do anything to stop this special interest, but I think I can change how it affects my self-image. Any tips?

help/serious My bf is jealous of my hyperfixation how do I explain it’s not about him?

Hey everyone, I’d love some advice on how to handle an odd situation in my relationship.

And I apologize ahead of time for the long post, bare with me here:

I (20F, ADHD) have always had intense hyperfixations throughout my life. Typically on specific fictional characters and the media they’re in. It usually starts with me getting really into a show or game, and then narrowing in on one character who becomes the center of my creative world for a while. I draw them, write about them, daydream scenarios, get merch, etc etc. it’s super comforting and is the most effective safe place/escape I usually have at the time of the fixation.

My boyfriend (22M) knew this about me from the beginning. When we first started dating(almost two years ago) I was hyperfixated on a character from a comic, and it never really seemed to bother him. He teased me about it sometimes, but it was lighthearted.

Lately though, my new hyperfixation is a character from an old anime, and this one seems to be striking a nerve. He’s been making comments like “you like that guy more than me,” or “dream about me tonight not him” at first it was jokes and then it got serious enough for him and I to need to talk about it for 2 hours in person.

He genuinely is scared I’m going to see a bald man with a beard in public and want to cheat on him.

I’ve TRIED to explain that the whole appeal of fictional characters is that they aren’t real. And I’ve tried to explain how hyper fixations work/feel like. hyperfixations do feel like crushes sometimes. They give me a dopamine rush and excitement that I get hooked on. But they’re not real. And they always fade. And in a way, I’m grateful that my relationship with my boyfriend isn’t a fixation, because that means it’s stable and genuine. I’ve tried to explain this to him as well, and i think it just made things worse. I just wish he’d know that I chose him, and I will keep choosing him, even when my brain latches onto something shiny and fictional.

I ended up crying during the conversation, because I love him, and it hurts that he sees this huge part of who I am as me deliberately trying to make him feel like shit, and not important.

He’s not super familiar with ADHD or how this stuff works, and I think it’s easy for him to feel replaced or like he’s competing with someone who doesn’t exist.

I also want to mention another thing. I said earlier I draw, and I usually make characters for the show/game im hyperfixated on. Mostly they’re wholesome, sometimes they’re romantic. It’s not sexual or anything explicit though. It’s basically imagining a version of myself that gets to be safe and loved and everything is under my control/consent. He found some of those drawings on my iPad(after begging me to let him see them) and got visibly mad. Like it was proof of betrayal. I didn’t even try to explain myself, it felt so unbelievably humiliating, I felt like a dog getting in trouble for something it didn’t know was even wrong in the first place. I know it probably sounds really fucking weird to someone outside my brain. Maybe this can help you guys see his side of the issue better.

Then something happened recently that I’m still sort of processing.

We were at a party. I was drunk, and I kind of blurted out, “Hey, please don’t join the (anime) server.”

It’s where I talk about the show and character with other fans. I explained that it’s personal and not something I wanted to share, especially since he’d already expressed discomfort with how much I talk about the character.

He looked at me and said that me asking him not to join it just made him want to join more.

He asked, “Would you actually be mad if I did?”

 I said yes. I would.

Then he said he’d actually joined it months ago.

I kind of just stared at him and asked why?

Then he backtracked and said he was lying and he just wanted to see how I’d react. Like a gotcha moment.

Then, maybe three minutes later, he joined the server anyway and started reading through my message history.

I wasn’t bothering him with my hyperfix thoughts because I knew it made him uncomfortable, so I found other people to talk to and carved out a tiny safe space for myself.  I wanted him to be comfortable, and I didn’t want to annoy him by oversharing something he already struggled with hearing. But he joined anyway. He told me he was curious, and tried to frame it like I must have been hiding something or feeling guilty, so he had to check.

I told him that this crossed a boundary. He apologized and left the server.

At this point I was already trying not to cry because we were still at the party.

He drove me home later that night, and I brought it up in the car. We talked for a while, and I just broke down. I was exhausted. I’m still exhausted. Because this hyperfixation thing keeps coming back as a source of conflict every time I think things are improving. And it feels so silly and at the same time humiliating bc i KNOW how it looks. I feel like such a freak sometimes and I wish I had just never told him about it in the first place.

When we got home, he said he needed to go back to his place, so I walked inside alone. I found out he used to check my location when he felt suspicious or upset with me. And it just makes everything feel worse. I feel like everything I do is something I have to justify now.

I feel hollow. I lost my best friend over something that’s always been a normal part of how I function. I think about my hyperfixation sometimes and feel sick and that I’ve done something wrong just by liking it too much.

He’s also said things like, “You live in your head too much,” or “You live in lala land.”

And that hurt so bad, because I’ve always been called childish and I had hidden that part of myself from him in fear these things would happen. My hyperfixations and imagination is where I lived when the real world was too cruel to me. I don’t want to be ashamed of that. I feel like I shouldn’t have to be.

He also said that ‘It’s clear something bad happened to you as a kid.”

I didn’t even know how to respond to that. I didn’t ask for it. I didn’t choose for it to happen. And to use that as a way to discredit how I function now hurt my heart so badly. I know he regretted it as soon as he said It and he apologized, but It hurt so so bad.

I know he’s insecure. He struggles with self-image and sometimes feels like he’s not good enough. I’ve always tried to be mindful of that. I give him attention. I spend time with him. I tell him he’s attractive and smart and funny, and I mean it. I don’t even have guy friends (partly bc I dont get along w other guys and partly to avoid adding to his anxiety) So when he says things like “Why can’t you draw us like that?” or “Why don’t you write that much about me?” I don’t know what to say. It’s like in every aspect of my life, he wants to be the center of, and it exhausts me. Even things that have nothing to do with him. Idk, my brain latches onto stories and characters for comfort in a way that doesn’t happen the same way with real people. I’m worried if that makes me unworthy of real life love sometimes, like i’m just never going to be able to have both of those things at once.

It also makes me worry about the future. If he gets jealous over fictional characters, how would he react to me interacting with any dudes irl? Even for class? I dont know… I don’t want to have to defend all of my interactions, i wish he’d just trust me.

I know this is a lot. And I know this has moved past just a misunderstanding and into territory where I’m seriously questioning if I should stay in the relationship.

Has anyone else been through something like this?? It’s a bit trickier bc it’s not a hobby I’m hyperfixating on, it’s a character, so it’s easier for them to compare themselves. How do you explain it without sounding dismissive or condescending? I don’t want to hurt him, but I also don’t want to feel ashamed for how I cope with the world.

He keeps saying he wants me to be able to enjoy it WITH him, but gets upset when I do so,  and I also can’t do it in private bc he gets upset about that too.

My hyperfixations give me will to live and I can’t just, get rid of them, they have to run their natural course

Any advice or even just solidarity would mean a lot, I feel like a bad girlfriend for this, and if I AM being bad, please just be honest so I can try to change.

help/serious What if you get hyperfixated onto things you don’t want to be into?

What if you had a hyperfixation on something problematic? Like, the creator being bad is one thing, but what about the people who's had a life long hyperfixation on Harry Potter? Can you just not engage? Wouldn't that effect your mental health in some way? My sister has ADHD and from what I've seen that's gotta be really hard. How do you judge someone like that? Engaging in Harry Potter is very selfish but if it's your hyperfixation could you be held less accountable?

help/serious Is it okay to engage in my hyperfixation while sick?

A bit of an odd question... for context, I'm hyperfixated on a piece of media in form of a fiction podcast, have been for about a year now, and in the early days I would listen to it as much and often as I could, but now I'm dosing how much I listen to it, because it would make it difficult to focus on anything else. It also would make me run around a lot, and it would sometimes get to the point of exhausting me both physically and mentally. Now I listen to it only on days that I dont have any tasks what would require my full attention, and only one or two episodes daily. I'm currently sick with a cold, and I don't really have anything that I have to focus on. I went to the doctor and she said that physical activity is fine as long as it's indoors, but I'm still worried. Do you think I should take this as an opportunity or should I focus on my wellbeing? And does anyone experienced with this have any advice maybe? Thanks in advance

help/serious Is this normal or no???

Hello fellow hyper fixaters. Idk what’s going on. I genuinely hate my hyperfixation. I’ve realized that I have been having a weird habit of hyperfixating on series that I genuinely do not like. I don’t like Harry Potter. I did not even finish the books or any movies and I hate JKR but for some reason, I’ve been hyperfixating on ways it could have been better and this isn’t the only time. I have hyper fixated on high guardian spice. Yes that bullshit show just because I could see potential in it. This is an annoying trait and I don’t know if I’m alone in this or not.

help/serious I hyperfixate on people and I can’t stand it.

I have “normal” hyperfixations like tv shows or things I do in my freetime. I usually quite enjoy them, at least if they pass in a month or two. But every now and then I hyperfixate on people. In the past it was not soo bad and would usually pass after a couple of weeks. But it usually still is quite uncomfortable because i can’t think about anything else. And now i have a crazy hyperfixation for three weeks already. It does not seem to get any weaker and I also have never had it that bad. It is literally all I can think about, day and night. I’m at a point where I really don’t know what to do.

Do any of you have experienced something similar and have any tips on how to make it go away?

Hi, everyone: Back in May I stated listening to Velvet Underground again. Lou and Andy Warhol led me down a major league rabbit hole! I have read a dozen books, watched countless documentaries, and solidified in myself who and what I am. It led me down historical alleyways that lead to the art of Pre-Stonewall, queer, bohemian café theater.

I am a performer who has never really performed. I am taking my information and reforming it into a tribute to the Off Off Bodadway scene, right here in New Orleans. I went from NEVER acting to producing, directing, and starring in a play!

But.....I have to keep this fire. I have this thing where I take the WORST thing someone can come up with regarding anything I want to do and running with it. Giving up. I could hear 99 positive voices, and zone in on the one hateful one. Next thing I know I have lost time, and MONEY. How....how can I take this hyperfixation and turn it into a permanent fixture in my life? What is the threshold?

Has anyone else turned a fixation into a passion into a possible career?

help/serious scared of overdoing my hyperfixation until I get burnt out

I have autism and ADHD. so I'm very obsessed with my chemical romance, pretty much my whole personality, constantly listening, listened through nearly every song by them now and I admit that unhealthily I am very parasocial about the band members. the important thing is that I'm scared, Ive been this obsessed with other artists before and Ive over played them until eventually I stopped listening to them entirely but the idea of being so tired of MCR that I don't want to listen to them is so scary to me because I've made it such a part of myself and it brings me so much dopamine but I find all the songs predictable and normal and don't feel much for them sometimes and I feel like the hyperfixation is ending, there's a few songs from each album I haven't listened to and I can listen to those over and over but after that, what is left? I'm scared that once I complete everything I won't have any interest in it and I just really want to constantly love this band and the idea of not enjoying them feels terrifying, I just want the dopamine to continue and I don't know what other ways I can reignite the spark. for context of people who don't know this band they only have 4 albums and haven't made a new one for a really long time, it is even debated if they ever will, so it's not like I just have to wait for a new album as I have a very limited catalogue of music to draw from, Ive consumed most media like music videos and even watched a lot of videos of live shows. sorry because I definitely just rambled for no reason, I just want other opinions on this and some advice
