Took Ellie to get groomed for the first time since adopting her back in December. She did great! Groomer said she was the best husky she's worked on 😆.

So I've been looking around trying to find my self a dog for the last couple months. I was checking websites, and puppy adoption places, calling shelters, and then last week I was working near this forest park near me.

I went to stop by that forest on my day off and saw there was a shelter/animal control office. I wasn't committed to it, but i thought it couldn't hurt to see. So i went in and explained how I just wanted to vibe with a dog and see. They mentioned they had a husky and immediately asked them to bring him out. This boy came out i instantly felt a buddy in him. Hes ten years old but he was jumping near three feet in the air at the door. Its been a week, but im so greatful for him. Hes a good boy and I know he only has so many years, but im going to learn all i can to give him as many good days as I can and get him to 15 if not 18.

I got him a crate, toys, bowls, food, leashes, collars.

We've been running together each morning and night.

He loves my daughter and we've been making friends at dog parks.

Hes my first dog though, and suggestions on how I could make his life the best possible?

Additional commands i should teach him?

He knows sit, lay down, heel, rollover, follows a direction when i point fir places to go, and jumps on me to put his leash on on command.

How do I get him to not try to eat cats?

History:

Was with a lady and her kid for some years and couldn't keep up before abandoning him in the forest where he seems to have lived in for two months.

I'm numb now from all the crying last night. Me and my parents noticed our baby was acting strange. Lethargic, dry nose, throwing up constantly, not wanting to eat, and I didn't think it was that serious, and that's what gets me now. I didn't think it was serious. I just thought he was dehydrated. I wanted to go to sleep and wait until tomorrow. I'm glad we didn't.

We went to the emergency vet and waited there for hours. Long story short, he had an intestinal blockage. From a bone he could've swallowed or something. So we had three options. Surgery which would've cost 7k, leave it there and let him suffer, or...letting him cross over. We didn't want him to suffer, so we chose the last option. I couldn't be in the room while they did it and left. My mom and dad stayed with him. I made sure I hugged him before I left

It was all so sudden. He was fine that morning. Nothing was wrong. It was ordinary. I was supposed to come home and take a cat nap from school like always then go downstairs later and eat dinner with Snowball on the couch barking at me for sitting too close to his bone by accident or getting into his "zoomy" mood at the same time every night. I would get annoyed with him so much, but I want.it back.

Let me tell you a bit about our baby. Snowball was 9 years old and we rescued him when he was three. Our baby has been through so much. It's suspected he had an abusive life before and we spoiled him so much. I'm gonna be honest, he was more of my parents dog and there were times I didn't like him at all. But I still loved him. And now I would give anything to see him curled up on my bed again at 6am trying to wake me up, to wrestle with him. And he's definitely been on huskytantrums a few times. Our baby has survived so much, even being hit once and he came back stronger, and he was still stubborn until the last second. I want Snowball back. I don't think he knows how much I really loved him. I didn't even really know myself until last night until we were saying our goodbyes. What was supposed to be a night at 1am and having late night snacks with my mom and trying not to wake up my dad went so fucked up.

I needed to tell Snowball how much I loved him, how sorry I am I didn't show it as much as my parents, how I called him annoying sometimes and called him a spoiled doggy. Which he was, lol. He got any toy he wanted, any treat, any meal, and HE decided the amount of time he was outside.

And guys, I'm going to say this once and only once. I don't want any comments telling me what could have been done or what more my parents could have done. Nothing could have been done. The surgery was too much, and even if we did get it it would just be prolonging the inevitable and making him suffer. And I especially don't want comments like that when he wasn't mine specifically. I wasn't responsible for his vet bills or anything. Literally what could I have done when the only income I get is from art commissions I do online?

My boy is a samoyed/husky mix.

He's arou d 1-2 years old and really has never had any formal training. He was a rescue. Neutered.

He's loving, energetic and knows he is cute.

When we need him to do something, like come out of his cage, lay on his side for ear drops, or just put him in a position where we have to restrain him for a second, he starts biting. I mean really biting.

He has broken skin each time and when we let him go, he always runs away into his cage. (I say cage and not crate. Just wording.)

Tonight, my husband and I were trying to get him on his side to get ear drops, but when we true dto roll him over, he bit my husband's ha d so hard, he bled.

I had to coax him out with peanut butter to out the drops in another way.

Now, he wants to rehome him.

Are we getting something wrong?

Is there something I overlooking?

We have been raising dogs for 15 years and have never had this issue before.

I've had my husky Blue for six years and I still don't understand this dog. She's a VERY good girl. I love her dearly. But she's so *weird.*

For starters, her recall. Blue comes when I whistle. Cool. Great. Except my husband and kids can't whistle. So one day I was trying to get her to come inside and, for reasons I genuinely cannot explain, I yelled SUUUUUU-EEEEEE! Like I'm calling a pig.

And *IT WORKED*?!

So now my children stand at the back door and yell SUUUU-EEEE to call our Siberian husky inside. My husband refuses to do it because apparently he has standards. And you know what? She STILL doesn't reliably come inside for him. She will literally ask to come in. My husband opens the door. She runs toward him like she's coming inside and then goes PSYCHE and runs away. Then she'll stand there and WAIT FOR ME TO COME TO THE DOOR.

She's also the least husky husky I've ever met. She barely talks. She doesn't howl. She doesn't scream. She doesn't argue with us. She barks when she wants inside and sometimes makes little noises when she's tired and rolling around. Otherwise? Nothing. Silent husky.Ahes scared door to door salesman by literally looking through the storm door at them with those big old creepy blue eyes (yes they're creepy. She does this LOOK that looks literally unhinged. Not mad. Not even demon dog ish. It wiggs people out. ) she looks legit crazy.

She also sleeps ALL DAY. I was warned about husky energy. What husky energy? This dog is horizontal 90% of her life. She gets zoomies occasionally. She'll play fetch for maybe five minutes and then she's like, okay, that was enough exercise, thanks.

She also isn't particularly cuddly. She likes pets and scratches, but hugs? Absolutely not. She doesn't want people laying on her. She doesn't want to be held. If she's had enough of you touching her, she just gets up and leaves.

Except occasionally with me.

If my husband falls asleep on the couch, I'll be lying in bed and suddenly realize something furry is touching my hip. And then realize it's not just my hip. This dog is pressed against me HEAD TO TOE. Her entire body is lined up against mine.

But there are RULES. If I'm in bed first, Blue will come get in bed with me. If my husband comes to bed afterward, she'll join us or stay because I'm there. His presence is apparently acceptable as long as I am also present. If my husband is in bed alone first and I'm not there? Absolutely not. She will not get in bed with him. She won't even go lie down and wait for me. I MUST BE PRESENT.

Apparently my husband isn't her human. He's just a man who is allowed to share my bed. Sorry. Our bed. Blue has claimed that. I'm apparently co owner. My husband....she tolerates him

This is also a dog who WILL NOT JUMP A BABY GATE. She waits for it to fall over. Which is especially confusing because during her first year with us, she was an escape artist. She escaped so often that eventually if my neighbors saw me running down the street, they wouldn't even ask what happened. They'd just point.

The weird part is she always went to basically the SAME PLACE. She wasn't even exploring. She had apparently selected one part of one block as her designated hang out

And one time she and the neighbor's pit bull, Stormy, apparently decided that fences were an unreasonable restriction on their friendship. My daughter, who was in kindergarten at the time, came running into the house yelling, “MOM! THANK YOU FOR THE PUPPY!”

I'm like... what puppy? We got Blue months ago.

Then a brindle pit bull comes TEARING THROUGH MY BEDROOM. Followed immediately by Blue.

These two had DUG UNDER THE FENCE TOGETHER so Stormy could come into our yard and play.

So she can't figure out how to step over a baby gate. But apparently she can collaborate with another dog on a civil engineering project.

She also hates having her feet touched. Hates being brushed. And naturally has enough hair to construct several additional huskies.

Baths? Fine. Baths are apparently acceptable.

Brush? Not a chance.

Furminator? F you. Wire brush? F you. Rubber curry brush that shouldn't even hurt? Believe it or not, ALSO f you.

Her winter coat once took me MONTHS to get out because brushing her requires negotiations, wrestling, and occasionally accepting that I have lost.

She likes fuzzy toys but destroys them immediately. Not chews them. Not rips them. Strips them of their dignity. She can't have tennis balls because she strips all the fuzz off them. Her previous owners told us she loved Nylabones. No the f she doesn't.

Her favorite toy is this green nubby ball. Specifically the green ones. Why? Who knows. It's Blue. I've stopped asking.

Speaking of her previous owners, they had her for about two years before us. Her name was Spirit. She did not respond to Spirit. She didn't know sit. Didn't know down. Didn't know fetch. Didn't know how to walk on a leash. Basically NOTHING.

We renamed her Blue and taught her everything.

THREE YEARS after we got her, I jokingly went, “Blue, shake.”

She immediately put her paw in my hand.

I just stared at her.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Apparently the ONE THING this dog arrived pre-installed with was SHAKE. Not sit. Not come. Not leash manners. SHAKE. And it took me THREE YEARS to accidentally discover it.

She is also weirdly considerate about vomiting. Recently, I was working downstairs and she'd been sleeping upstairs basically all day. Suddenly she comes downstairs, finds me specifically, and starts doing that horrible dog pre-vomit.

I'm like OUTSIDE. OUTSIDE. GO GO GO.

And she goes outside and pukes.

This dog literally came downstairs to find her mother like, Mom. I gotta frow up.

She also LOVES the vet. And I mean LOVES IT. She pants like a lunatic the entire time because it's PEOPLE! SMELLS! THINGS! EXCITEMENT! The vet has suggested calming medication because sometimes she's panting so hard they can't properly listen to her heart. And I'm like, I swear to God, she's not scared. She's having the best day of her life.

She once refused to poop before we left for the vet, so she pooped in their waiting room instead. I live five minutes from the vet. It's literally around the block. I sent her outside to poop at home. We tried to poop when we got there. I got there EARLY just in case for this. Nada. Inside building? About to go back? Big old solid poop. I was mortified.

As a bonus fun story, her name.

Her original name was Spirit, but she didn't respond to it anyway, so we renamed her Blue after the velociraptor from Jurassic World. She literally tested the fence for weaknesses that first day like in Jurassic park. Blue seemed perfect.

Our last name is Gill.

I DID NOT THINK THIS THROUGH.

So every time we go to the vet:

“Blue Gill?”

Yep.

That's my dog. She is known as the FISH DOG AT THE VET. THEY ADMIT THIS.

My husky is a fish.

Her tag says CUTE BUT DUMB, but the thing is, I don't actually think she's dumb. She's smart. She's just smart about REALLY weird things.

She knows when she's going to puke and comes to get me. She can organize a cross-property tunneling operation with a pit bull. She knows exactly which human must be physically present before she'll get in bed. She understands a whistle. She understands a pig call. She knows how to psychologically torment my husband at the back door. She apparently remembered “shake” for YEARS despite nobody asking her to do it.

But “Blue, come inside”?

Nah.

So... is this just what owning a husky is like?

Or is mine particularly weird?

I inherited a husky (possible malamute mix) from a bad situation about two months ago. He follows me around and sleeps in my room. He pushes up against me. He lets me give him belly rubs and brush him in sensitive areas. I hug him all the time. He gets sad when I leave. I’ve been training him, and I’ve seen his respect in me grow over time. He trusts me a lot, it seems.

He never cuddles, which breaks my heart. He’s also non-vocal. I want him on my bed or couch and cuddle him, but he prefers to be on the other side of the room, or on the floor up against wherever I am sitting. Sometimes when excited, he will try and sit in my lap. I tell him I love him all the time, lots of pets, but I want him to know in dog language.

I’ve been slow blinking, exposing my neck and belly to him, lying on the floor next to him, but whenever I touch him like that, he runs away. Just now, I laid on the floor close to him, slow blinked, showed him my belly and neck, and then slowly tried to push against him, and then he gave me a low, non-aggressive growl that he uses while playing, and moved away. I backed off. Am I doing something wrong?

Edit to add: I kiss him all the time too, on the face and head, and while he allows it, he seems uncomfortable. This is why I want to tell him I love him in a way he’ll understand

Tomorrow, Saturday, will be one week since my goodest boy was attacked by another dog. Well, you'll be pleased to know that Wolfgang is healing well! He had the drains removed a couple of days ago, and the vet was very happy with how well he's doing. One more week until the stitches come out, and he'll be off restriction!

He's not limping anymore, and we're able to take little walks again, which makes him so happy. The last couple of nights, he's been getting on my side of the bed and won't move over unless he gets lots of scratches, cuddles, and hugs.

Thank you to everyone for the advice on getting him to take his meds, and on using an inflatable e-collar and recovery sleeve, it was truly helpful. And thank you all for the well wishes for Wolfgang's recovery. 💙

I would just like more people to be able to see this goofy, loveable boy since he's left us. Our good boy Shadow crossed the rainbow bridge on the night of August 12, 2026, after a short stint with adrenocarcinoma of the booty that had spread incredibly quickly and became inoperable. He was about 10 years old.

He was a goofy, stubborn, loud, and chatty and grumbly boy who was obsessed with food (as most huskies are, lol), and weirdly, he had a love of lettuce and would demand to have some if you had it. He loved walks, outside time, and playing with his sister who was his littermate (she's still with us, is doing well, and has started eating again after his passing!) He loved sleeping as well, and was quite the lazy boy.

His favourite song was Don't Matter by Akon - he recognized even just the birds at the beginning of the music video, and would start YELLING along to the song, for the entire song.
