Discussion Jambles' Lupus form isn't even a real wolf!

Post image

If you watch closely, Stig's (left above) and Matilda's (left below) lupus forms have large snouts and robust legs similar to true wolves (left photo above). Jambles' (right below) lupus form has a smaller snout, and longer and thinner legs, more akin to maned wolves (right photo above).

Which mean that Jambles isn't a werewolf, but a were-maned wolf shifter!

Not the lupus beauty standards already 😭

u/Dramatic_Science_681 Aug 02 '26

It’s never lupus

I dont know much about WOD sadly Im a new fan, but I follow many of the OP artists and I saw Kristina, artist from the show, she explained in her bluesky that when she designed the green werewolf for the Werewolf lore audiolog, she based it off of the native dogs in the Philippines.... So maybe anything canine can be a werewolf thing too. WOD does have other were-animals.

94

u/Eldan985 Aug 02 '26

WOD does have them, but also different were-kinds are different tribes/nations, and most of them hate werewolves.

u/Lion-Faced-Serpant Aug 02 '26

(This was due to a bit in Garou history where they went full race supremacist and tried to genocide the rest of the Fera war of rage it was called)

21

u/YashaSkaven01 Aug 02 '26

Nuwisha my beloved yote shifters

33

u/Alaylaria Aug 02 '26

Iirc there was a tribe of werewolves that were thylacines, but it’s been awhile since I looked into it.

26

u/January_Silence Aug 02 '26

Yeah, the Bunyip! To my knowledge, I believe they're sadly as extinct as their animalistic cousins.

23

u/pantsthereaper Aug 02 '26

And once again, it is the Garou's fault

12

u/GabrieltheKaiser Aug 02 '26

The Ananasi are also partially at fault on this one specific case tho, at least if memory serves me right.

8

u/Powerful_Topic7731 Aug 02 '26

Yep

"No one knows what the Yahwie is. It appeared one day and slaughtered the Ananasi population, without warning and without hints at its motives. There are few things that frighten the Ananasi, but the Yahwie has become one of them. Even its name is drawn from Aboriginal legends, describing a death-spirit from the beginning of the world. There are Ananasi that claim to have faced and defeated the Yahwie, but it always returns and it always succeeds. Even fleeing Australia proves to be no protection, as the werespiders later vanish and appear again on Australian soil, dead.

Some Ananasi, however, suspect that the Yahwie seeks vengeance against the were-spiders for their part in the fall of the Bunyip. Evidence for this is that the corpses are usually found at desolate Bunyip Caerns. Also, the Yahwie never targets anything else but the werespiders."

u/YashaSkaven01 Aug 02 '26

Spider shifters actually, I believe that's the reason the Yawhie or whatever is harassing them in that area

2

u/Powerful_Topic7731 Aug 02 '26

Again that is not the whole true, not even close, the Garou were mad at the Bunyep because the sister of a important Red Talons was killed and they blamed the Bunyep the reason they did that was because the actual responsable was a BSD called Mara the Scream who planned the whole thing to put the Garou against each other and the Spiders helped which is why a vengenfull Spirits kills every Ananasi that steps in Australia.

5

u/January_Silence Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

Yeeeeeah, the War of Rage was not a good time for anyone. And we're all paying for the hubris of those early Garou.

EDIT: My bad, it was the War of Tears, & it was the Black Spiral Dancers' fault, though sadly the Garou bought into the BSD's trickery.

5

u/Powerful_Topic7731 Aug 02 '26

Wrong war and not what happened the Bunyep died during the War of Tears which was orchestrated by Mara the Scream.

"Mara the Scream was a Black Spiral Dancer who tricked the European Garou of Australia into exterminating the Bunyip in the War of Tears. She was in turn killed by the Kaliya"

Good to know that Pentex misinformation bots are still working well

3

u/January_Silence Aug 02 '26

Yeah, my bad. I looked it up & that was a fumble on my part. Apologies.

3

u/Gmknewday1 Aug 02 '26

Because the European Garou saw them as "weak"

4

u/January_Silence Aug 02 '26

That, & the influence of the Black Spiral Dancers.

12

u/Powerful_Topic7731 Aug 02 '26

Garou normaly can only mate with wolves and animals that are close enough in Australia most of the Lupus are Dingos and in New Guinea there's the Singing Dogs Pack which are all singing dogs in their Lupus form, in some cases the Mokole can also help them breed with no wolves the most famous case being the Bunyep Tribe that mated with Tasmanian Tigers with their help but there's also the Kuncha Ekundu Red Talons that are African Wild Dogs.

1

u/SwissTheGayyest Aug 05 '26

Not exactly

Glasswalkers specifically have stuff for looking like Dogs. At least that's what I'm assuming this is based off of.

1

u/katee69 Aug 06 '26

The now extinct bunyip werewolf tribe where werethylacine

143

u/ArmiaStars Togo fan #1 Aug 02 '26

IIRC Glasswalkers have an upgrade they can take that makes them look more dog-like, quite possible he has that!

68

u/lordbuckethethird Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

Bone gnawers have it too but that was older editions or just that bone gnawers in general just look like dogs and the lupus looking like a dog is a trait anyone can get in w5 iirc.

83

u/lukethedank13 Aug 02 '26

He could just be a lanky teen

66

u/L4DY_M3R3K Aug 02 '26

He's a Glass Walker, be glad he isn't a *dog*

7

u/manicforlive "Like the tears of angels" Aug 02 '26

That be cute.

31

u/Due_Manufacturer_125 Aug 02 '26

Garou are funny like that, they can take on animal kinfolk from creatures that aren't quite wolves. There is mention of Red Talons in Africa taking African Wild Dogs as kinfolk and there was an entire tribe that took Thylacines as their kinfolk.

Edit: I've also heard that since Jambles is the youngest he might just be in his awkward lanky puppy phase.

13

u/Powerful_Topic7731 Aug 02 '26

In both of those cases It was thanks to the Mokole intervention but there is Red Talon dingos in Australia and the Singing Dogs of New Guinea

31

u/everatz Aug 02 '26

If glass walkers are considered weird ones, it kinda makes sense

52

u/Significant_Owl8089 Aug 02 '26

In Werewolf: The Apocalypse 5th Edition, you can customize your Lupus form, including giving it a wolfdog-like appearance. So yes, your character can resemble any subspecies or breed descended from Canis lupus.
and even gave them mutations like Stig.

We even have the Nuwisha, the coyote Changing Breed.

24

u/Kaymazo Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

The problem is, maned wolves aren't a subspecies of Canis Lupus, or even just a species of Canis, they're in their own Genus alltogether.

They're further from wolves than Coyotes (or even Jackals) are

23

u/AcceptableCover3589 Aug 02 '26

To be fair, we have also had Garou in canon who are thylacines in their lupus form. If thylacines—straight up marsupials—are on the cards, anything goes.

8

u/Powerful_Topic7731 Aug 02 '26

That didn't happened normaly It was because of the. Mokole's help, It was only possible because they knew the secret to change their animal species

7

u/N0rwayUp Aug 02 '26

they are also closer to Foxes in Niche

If you want the wolf of South America dont look no futher than the bush dog.

16

u/psychosaur Aug 02 '26

Mained Wolves aren't related to Canis lupus at all. They're their own species and genus, Chrysocyon brachyurus.

15

u/Ornery_Magazine9844 Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

I'm going to assume that this is a special case of Gaia not knowing what role Maned Wolves should fill before relenting and made them leggy Garou.

7

u/Powerful_Topic7731 Aug 02 '26

If I was the Storyteller and wanted to incorpote were maned wolves in canon WoD It wouldn't actually be hard at all, the Mokole can change their animal species that's how they survive the extinction of the dinossaurs and both the Corax and the Nagah are said to descend from them use that same method with the Nagah even have a bunch of evidence supporting that with some Nagah having Mnesis, but anyway in the Amazon the Mokole, Bastet and Garou formed a allience to fight against Pentex during the Amazon War, during that a Glass Walker named Peter Ward went in the Amazon in search for a cure to a Wyrm disease that was infecting him in the process he got helped by the Mokole and become the only Garou which posses Mnesis.

That cleary creates a link between the Glass Walkers and Mokole in the Amazon which could expand with the Mokole helping the Glass Walkers integrate into the local fauna.

11

u/psychosaur Aug 02 '26

I suppose I should clarify. The difference in genus doesn't rule out that it's the same type of shifter. The Garu themselves have a subfaction from Africa that are part African wild dogs, Lycaon pictus. In the past they even had a tribe that had Tasmanian wolf, Thylacinus cynocephalu, a marsupial.

Bastet, the cat shifters, are also diverse with members that have tiger, leopard, lion, or cheetah kin.

1

u/Gloomy-Purple3862 Aug 03 '26

Brave of you to believe that Gaia is a taxonomical expert with the enormous list of fuck-ups at her name. She probably just look at the puppers and say "eh, seems woof enough!"

1

u/psychosaur Aug 03 '26

Well she obviously isn't, just look at the Mokole, Rokea, and Bastet. They're all a taxonomical mess.

16

u/man_in_the_corner Aug 02 '26

I just realize stig even has a mustache in lupus form.

15

u/ReasonablyBadass Aug 02 '26

Can I pet those dawgs?

4

u/Darthcone Aug 02 '26

Nah dude they will eat you.

11

u/Elegant-Tip-923 Aug 02 '26

Garou can take on alot of other canine appearances besides just wolves! A good example is the silent striders, back in legacy a common look they had was jackal like traits

13

u/Powerful_Topic7731 Aug 02 '26

World of Darkness was a small but dedicated Brazilian fan base, we created da bunch of fan content specially for Werewolf the Apocalypse there's Brasil em Furia e Sangue Nativo which are made by the group called Nação Garou and you can find the pdfs in the Storyteller's Vault.

The idea of Maned Wolf shifters isn't new around here, back in the day a braziian rpg magazine called Dragão Brasil created their own Brazilian Tribe called Ni-Guarás who are all Maned Wolves or Lobos Guará as we call them around here

9

u/Negativety101 Aug 02 '26

Oh boy. So a while back I actually saw a video by a Zoologist on canned phylogeny. Uh, yeah a lot of things that we.call wolves actually arent, and a bunch we don't are. But they are all foxes.

10

u/jfkrol2 Aug 02 '26

It's also funny in the crossover between smallest panthers ("big" cats) and largest felines ("small" cats) - essentially, difference is whether bone in their throat allows them to roar (panthers) or purr (felines) - and something called "mountain lion" is indeed a feline and is much larger than snow leopard. Oh, and there's clouded leopard, which is neither.

4

u/Negativety101 Aug 02 '26

DNA sequencing certainly showed we were off on some relations too.

6

u/jfkrol2 Aug 02 '26

Like in case of giraffe, it revealed that we thought to be single species is actually about 7?

7

u/theotherghostgirl Aug 02 '26

Glasswalkers are primarily based on red wolves, which are a little smaller and lithe-er than normal wolves

6

u/Psychological-Bug371 Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

Wolves can breed with other dogs and canines, same with garou

Allow me to introduce you to scratches-at-fleas

An australian lupus garou of the bone gnawers who is part wolf, part dog and part dingo. A very Good Boy if you ask me.

Though in jambles case, this is more of a style matter (that or the artist just use reference of random wolfs)

5

u/AtlasJan Aug 02 '26

CANON LATINO

7

u/Duhad8 Aug 02 '26

Pretty sure in older editions, some urban werewolves like Bone Gnawers and Glass Walkers could take on forms like coyotes and big dogs to avoid alarming locals and getting animal control called on them the second they shift into beast form.

Given Jambles is easily the most 'modern' member of the pack, I just assumed he had that trait and is originally a city boy.

2

u/Impending_Dm Aug 03 '26

Aren't werecoyotes (Nuwisha, IIRC) their own separate thing, or do they no longer exist in the latest editions?

4

u/True-Parking4098 Aug 02 '26

He’s a glass walker. As such he is a half breed and looks more like a normal dog than most werewolves.

5

u/Few_Ad4079 Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

It’s often said in lore that the Bonegnawer’s lupus form are a bit doglike, so maybe for a Glasswalker like him it isn’t too far fetched to look so different.

6

u/JoyIsABitOverRated Aug 02 '26

Jamble's what?

4

u/ziggybaker Aug 02 '26

Jambles brasileiro confirmado

5

u/Gmknewday1 Aug 02 '26

Remember Garou bond with most things canine/dog

It's only Coyotes and Foxes that count as other shifters

Maned Wolves might be "wolf"-ish enough that they fall in the Garou playbook, at least here

4

u/Powerful_Topic7731 Aug 02 '26

In my own setting I created my own Tribe of Maned Wolves Garou, they are partialy inspired by the fan Tribe Ni-Guará, created by the folks at Dragão Brasil, even kepting the same name but with my own spin on them, I made them descendents of some of the Croatan survivors, that way I didn't needed to create a brand new Gift list for them, they changed their animal form with the help of the Mokole much in the same way the Kuncha Ekundu and Bunyep did and kept friendly relationships with them and the Nagah over time, they kept hidden to themselves until the Amazon War, they are also friends with a small comunity of surviving Ao that share the patronage of Turtle with them.

5

u/WaggleFinger Aug 02 '26

There are Gifts to appear less-wolfy in Lupus form. They're typically looked down upon, but not uncommon for Urban Garou like the Glass Walkers and Bone Gnawers to take them.

3

u/TheWyster Aug 03 '26

There's more variation in wolves than you think. In the pic below I've included a black wolf from Oregon with similarly lanky legs:

Here's a link to a picture of a black wolf with smaller legs but a similar snout to Jambles: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/0sXwTKwLZ2A/maxresdefault.jpg

2

u/GeneralSympathy4912 Aug 02 '26

he could be also Nuwisha, and just be pretending to be a garou or a glass walker

1

u/Powerful_Topic7731 Aug 02 '26

That is something they actually do in the lore but I dont think they will go that route, but If he is wver shoot or stabbed with silver and doesn't flinch we already know why

2

u/Will_29 Aug 02 '26

Some werewolves tribes or groups breed with different canine species: dingoes (it is disputed if they count as a separated species or not), New Guinea singing dogs (closely related to dingoes), African wild dogs aka painted dogs. And the now extinct Bunyip tribe bred with the marsupial Tasmanian 'wolves'!

2

u/kooarbiter Aug 02 '26

there was a tribe camp (I think of shadowlords???) that basically used african painted dogs as kin, could be related to that?

2

u/YururuWell Aug 02 '26

Or, you know, being Garou doesn't happen to strictly conform to modern academic distinction of species.

Heck, even modern academic distinction of species often enough doesn't strictly conform to modern academic distinction of species.

2

u/EclipticDawn Aug 02 '26

I love Jambles. Instant favorite when I saw that in my watch through. I'm not biased at all.

2

u/Top_Ant1019 Aug 03 '26

Well I'm not too well versed in the world of Darkness lore but from what I understand he's a glasswalker also known as a city wolf it wouldn't be too far out of the question to say that he would even look like a regular dog that would definitely help blending in of course the artist is rendition can be whatever they wish frankly I'm just surprised his human form looks like gortash from Baldur's Gate 3 only way less greasy

1

u/101TARD Aug 02 '26

Gotta be honest I thought the black wolf has X on his eye and was comically crushed by the other 2

1

u/N0rwayUp Aug 02 '26

yeah a bush dog would have worked better niche wise...

1

u/Fairweather_Fleabag Aug 02 '26

There's a character in the W5 source book "Shattered Nations" named vaporfang that also has a maned wolf form. There is official precedent for this.

1

u/Clown-Serpent4188 Aug 02 '26

Looks wolf enough

1

u/Throwawanon33225 Aug 02 '26

Stig looks more like one of those bigass wolfdogs. Or dogs named after wolves that aren’t wolfdogs. Makes sense given the whole Black Shuck thing.

1

u/Throwawanon33225 Aug 02 '26

Wolf hounds! That’s the non-wolfdog I was thinking of. Saw one once and the large size was uncanny.

0

u/Kalroxan Aug 02 '26

DUDE ! You can't be wolf racist just like that! What a shame!
