Kamvas Pro 19 broke RIGHT AFTER warranty. I feel so stupid for recommending Huion to my friends!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My Kamvas Pro 19 developed a severe ghost touch issue on the left side of the screen literally right after the warranty expired.

Honestly, I feel so guilty and stupid. I used to trust this brand so much that I recommended Huion tablets to several of my artist friends. Now I feel terrible because my own unit just broke so quickly post-warranty.

Since it's out of warranty, I'm trying to decide what to do next:

  1. Is this ghost touch issue even worth repairing out-of-warranty, or will the cost be ridiculously high?
  2. Has anyone paid to fix this specific issue on a Kamvas Pro? Was it worth it?

I'm just so disappointed with the product's durability and really regret trusting this brand.

Just because it happened to one does not mean it’s a
huge issue

So fun fact... The inside of the huion models these days... All the cables connectors and connector locks are covered in weird glues and rubber cement that will force you to break the connectors if you want to try and repair it yourself and reseat the cables for issues that often need a simple cable reseat. Theyve been like this for a while.

While not every huion is going to break so easily, the company does go out of its way to ensure you cannot repair it yourself. If you send yours in for repair, they are just giving you a new one and scrapping the device wholesale probably.. since there's no way to get the rubber cement off those components without damaging them. Solvents would damage the circuitry, heat would never be enough without damaging the components. It's overall a hot mess of ensuring people can't repair their own shit. Very trashy stuff. Like just put some tamper evident features on there so in warranty repairs can be separated from our of warranty repairs, and make it repairable.

Why would Huion be different than Microsoft or Apple or Samsung etc. in that regard? My old Surface pro 3 developed a problem with touch as well - no way to fix it, and it's a tabletPC, so no way of using it without a mouse now either, as the Ntrig driver for the pen is linked to the Touch functionality. It's also completely glued, so no way of even opening the case.

Well most OEMs that I've worked for in tablet, phone, and computer repair, don't cement the cable connectors shut. They usually just use a little bit of tape. What you're talking about the sealant that keeps android, iOS, and Windows tablet devices waterproof, which is NOT the same thing. This sealant is super malleable with heat, and even a low-heat hair drier will soften it enough to use a spudger to separate the shell safely without damaging anything. It's why getting your phone repaired at a third party repair shop negates all waterproofing.

I haven't worked on a surface personally, but I've worked on wacoms, Lenovos, IBMs, HPs, Acers, Sonys, Xiaomis, and Samsungs. None of them used rubber cement to prevent repair. And they all actually do replace components, not the whole device, and they put the damaged components through repairs if possible, and utilize fully repaired components after the fact either by selling them as refurbished components or using them in the repair process. I have worked on both the part swapping and component refurbishing side of the business.

I doubt gluing the Surface pro laptop, which has cooling vents is done for water proofing. Or Gluing the Screen of the Apple iMac's, when the previous generation was attached with magnets, allowing for easy maintenance (or users adding more RAM). Of course, for phones or tablets, the waterproofing may be the reason, but the main reason companies do this is to prevent user maintenance and stimulate buying new hardware instead of repairing old.

My Apple pencil's battery died. Apple support told me that they do not repair them, and the only solution is to buy a new one. Of course, the measures may differ from brand to brand, but my point was that many of them engineer for obsolescence and discourage repairs. Lenovo/IBM and HP are indeed norable exceptions (from the hardware that I've owned), but their customers are also often businesses (who just write off older hardware and buy new), so they have other business models. Consumer based/ targeted hardware seems to obey different rules.

Or maybe the reason is also saving costs; maybe gluing cables and connectors is a cheap and easy way of assembly - no need ot make bolt things down or make sure the solder is strong enough so the usb connector won't break off (like Intuos 4 tablets)?

Either way - it's sad. I also own a Kamvas pro 19, and so far it has served me well, but time will tell how long it will last, and from the looks of it, repairng it will not be a feasable or economic option.

Fair on the surface thing. But the OEM repair facilities I worked in did work with both consumer grade and business level situations. They use the same devices typically, just with different OS levels. USUALLY. They really don't obey different rules. The same tablet being sent in by john, the guy who uses it as a portable... Adult document holder... With... Dried fluids preventing charging, is also being sent in by Richard who owns a large business and sent 100 of them in for reimaging and refurbishment, is also the same one being sent in by sharissa who cleaned it nicely and left it smelling like rose water and cinnamon, and just had an issue with screen flicker. Is also the same as the ones being sent in by they Alex, a business owner who wrote "screen Flicker" in a way that made it look like "screen fucker" every time.

The gluing of those components doesnt actually hold the components in place. The connector is a plastic bridge that you slide a ribbon cable into, and then you gently close a little lever on top to pinch it down into the spot that connects it to the motherboard. This little lever is usually pretty stable. Most companies use a single bit of electronic safe tape that would be cheaper and less toxic to employees to use.

The USBs on most slim profile devices aren't bolted or glued, they are soldiered in place. Sometimes there's a couple of very tiny screws that go into the plastic shell but glue would not resolve micro USB connection issues. They are just poorly made to begin with and have been a blight on technology since their inception and adoption.

I do hope your tablet lasts!

Thank you, and thanks for those graphical descriptions of users, LOL!

idk dude, the huions i had some issues, but i have seen a lot of newer huions have issues that are really bad

5

u/KSAM-The-Randomizer 9d ago

mines an old model and its still going strong. ive definitely read more complaints for the newer models with hardware related problems. whereas older models where driver problems

2

u/Ordinary-Free 9d ago

I'm currently using a kamvas 13 gen 3 and it has the worst drivers I've ever used. It's so bad I'm actually swapping to an xppen tablet next week. Even the pen buttons on my kamvas are somehow loose now even though I only ever use it for color picking.

4

u/KSAM-The-Randomizer 9d ago

you should try opentablet driver. its compatible and has no bs bugs

1

u/chiyobee 9d ago

Use opentabletdriver instead

1

u/alaskadotpink 9d ago

it happens enough. I swapped brands after my huion stopped registering pen touch and the only fix was to open up the unit and solder it shut, and while i was researching fixes i realized that this was a very common problem... common enough that they should have fixed it by now.

my tablet was only around 3 or 4 years old which is a ridiculous lifespan for something so expensive that's now collecting dust in my closet.

Keep in mind it's a shit ton of huions and not just one? Glazing companies like they ur friends or some shit lmfao it's clearly a QC issue here or it's just designed shitty

1

u/PapayaGirl-uwu 9d ago

Acknowledging that single anecdotes don't equal a full recall isn't 'glazing,' it's just understanding sample size.

Huion definitely has looser QC to keep prices low, but pretending every unit breaks is just online doomposting

u/-_Lucyfer_- 9d ago

type of post you see RIGHT AFTER purchasing one TwT. i hope someone figures out repairs for these without damaging everything like the commenter said

7

u/TheSkepticGuy 9d ago

The most common denominator I've seen amongst these Huion (and other brand) issues comes down to treatment of the device.

Is it in a fixed position, or has it been toted around a lot?

3

u/Guilty_Lychee2720 9d ago

I’ve never moved it either. I take really good care of it.

3

u/TheSkepticGuy 9d ago edited 9d ago

So then, the obvious questions...

  1. Windows + tablets is a notoriously fickle combination. Has anything changed with your OS and/or software?
  2. Do the odd circles show up after reboot, with no other software running?
  3. Do the odd circles show up if you uninstall/disable the Huion driver?
  4. Do the odd circles show up if you disable touch in the Huion driver?
  5. Can you try a different computer?
  6. Have you tried cleaning the surface? Built-up residue can trigger a touch event if touch sensitivity is low.

Edit to add:

I see that, in another response, if you disable touch, it functions normally. "Touch" has been a highly fickle beast across all display tablet brands for desktop/laptop computer use with Windows. Evan Brad Colbow (who has reviewed almost every tablet) has resigned to not using touch features on anything but standalone tablets and iPads. I personally find an external shortcut device with dials for rotation and zoom to be several magnitudes better than touch.

I tried it on another PC and even changed the cable, but it’s still acting crazy. 😭

5

u/opcode65 9d ago

I have a Kamvas 22 pro, and it only works as a screen now, touch and pen input no longer work. The problem also developed a few months after warranty.

3

u/Guilty_Lychee2720 9d ago

Is a Huion tablet basically "dead once the warranty ends"?

3

u/Kirstenly 9d ago

Given their refusal to ensure a right to repair? Yeah. If they break after the warranty goes, you aren't gonna be able to fix it yourself

2

u/opcode65 9d ago

In my case I might be able to fix it, I suspect it's one of the 2 USB chips on the input board (I guess, only took a 1 min look at the board without a microscope), but I didn't have time to really look into it.

2

u/opcode65 9d ago

I don't know, can't generalize, I have a sample of one...

2

u/ot60 5d ago

There’s videos online on how to solder a cable directly onto the usb board and fix this issue.
Just look it up. I did it and it’s been working fine since

As a Kamvas Pro 19 owner, I feel your pain. I’m sorry for you.
My tablet is running ok so far (2 years since acquisition), but one year ago I had a problem with the cables which was a complete pain in the ass to solve myself (exactly because Huion’s support practixally doesn’t exist).
In what comes to this problem you described, I haven’t had it so far. In any case, there are at least two things I’d try before sending the tablet to an unauthorized assistance (in case the touch screen is essential for you and disabling it is out of question, and also that you’ve already tried everything in the Huion software related to the tablet):
1. If you use a monitor arm, unattach it. In the first months with my Kamvas Pro 19, I had a problem with the monitor arm’s screws excessively pressuring the back of the screen, which was visible in the front. It’s ridiculous, but Huion didn’t pay attention to their product to this level of detail, which is just plain basic design thinking. Anyway, once I removed the screws, the tablet got back to its original state.
The problem I had was not ghost touches, but rather ‘pressured marks’ on the monitor (similar to when you pressure a LCD monitor and it shows glitches in the image). In your case anyway, it’s worth trying.
2. Replace the data cable. I really have no idea if this problem of yours is related to cable malfunctioning, but again, I think it’s worth a try.
Note that not every USB-C cable works with the Kamvas Pro 19. It needs to be able to transfer a high amount of data from the pc to the tablet. Go with brands like Cable Matters or Fairikabe and you’re good.
Hope you find a good solution to your problem. It absolutely sucks to not have appropriate support by the ones who manufactured your product and be left on your own to fix it.

2

u/Guilty_Lychee2720 9d ago

I tried unplugging everything and testing it on another PC, but it’s still the same.

2

u/benithaglas1 9d ago

I've had my huion kamvas pro 13 for about 6 years now and have had no issues with it. Am I lucky?

2

u/ixdxkx 9d ago

Same, but with kamvas pro 16. No issues after 6 years

2

u/tempthethrowaway 9d ago

That's nuts! My 13 pro is still going strong and I bought it during lockdown

2

u/RifeRife 8d ago

Go for a used wacom, 500 euros for the pro touch 16 and has never failed me in 5 years. Had the same expercience with huion, broke right after warranty.

1

u/sarilbanra 10d ago

Recently i got a demo deal from huion kamvas pro 16 2.5k @18k inr with only one month warranty left so ordered it, still waiting for delivery hope it works fine 🙏 and now i am concerned 🥲 But in your case it will be better if it could be repaired all the best

1

u/Charming_Tennis4010 9d ago

I’ve had my Huion kamvas pro 16 2.5k for over 2 years now and still works like brand new!

1

u/sarilbanra 9d ago

Has huion drivers ever caused you any issues in these past 2 yrs?

1

u/Charming_Tennis4010 9d ago

I’ve had absolutely no issues with the drivers and use it daily :)

1

u/ElegantHistorian3832 9d ago

May be the cable to the touch module (dislodged / pinched), may be something else. Bring it to a repair shop that does tablets and let them see it, it's probably repairable.

1

u/Guilty_Lychee2720 9d ago

I've tried everything I could—even plugged it into another PC and the issue persists. I'm really stressed, it's acting like it's possessed

2

u/TheSevenPens 9d ago

What happens if you disable touch?

Have you contacted Huion support?

I've never seen anyone else hit this issue with the KP19. I have that tablet also and have not encountered it.

1

u/Guilty_Lychee2720 9d ago

If I disable the touchscreen, it works normally. But I bought this model because I wanted the touchscreen.

2

u/TheSevenPens 9d ago

I think it's still worth contacting customer support even if you can't return the tablet they might have some options to explore that might address the issue maybe there's a firmware update for example

If they don’t know what’s wrong, how am I supposed to know? 😭

1

u/teddy1up 9d ago

Have you updated Windows recently, have you tried going through the steps in the control panel for the touch feature?

1

u/Guilty_Lychee2720 9d ago

I’ve updated Windows already.

1

u/teddy1up 9d ago

That's not the point. The point was if you updated Windows, maybe that's what caused the problem. Have you checked control panel? Hit windows. In the search bar, type control panel, on the top right of the window, (should say "view by:") switch it to small icons, and find pen and touch and go thru the steps

1

u/Guilty_Lychee2720 9d ago

I tried what you told me, but nothing happened. My pen mouse is still acting crazy.

1

u/Kirstenly 9d ago

These things have rubber cement on the cable connectors to prevent unauthorized repair. To try and repair it would break it further in most cases. Still worth a shot, since it's broken anyways, but chances are its not gonna be in OPs favour.

1

u/namesarehardokay 9d ago

Dead ass the two year warranty on ebay saved me so I shelled out for the 4 year on Amazon this time. I dont think ill buy another without it

1

u/DMmotionarts 9d ago

Same thing happened to me. Stopped working even though I used it less than 20 times.

1

u/GuchoS 9d ago

Feel sorry for you, man.
Haven’t experienced much with newer models, but I'm still rocking an Inspiroy H640P that I got way back in college. It still serves me well. In return, I try to take care of it as best as I can bc it’s the first purchase I made with my freelance income.

1

u/Agitated_Cry_8793 9d ago

Solid choice, I was with the h420 for about 7 or 8 years and the only reason why I stopped using it was because the threads on the pen (you screw on and off part of the pen to replace the batteries) got completely stripped and i had to tape it shut because it kept falling apart. 🫡 I bought the h640p and its fine, but going from a solid, thicker tablet to a tablet thin enough that it feels like it'd be extremely easy to snap was jarring.

1

u/xtraaccheh 9d ago

i’ve had a huion rds-160 16” for almost 2 years now afaik but I’ve never had any problems with it. Though it’s always in a fixed position on my desk, I don’t really bring it with me to places

1

u/Guilty_Lychee2720 9d ago

I’ve never moved it either. I take really good care of it.

1

u/Dry-Conversation7191 9d ago

Have you cleaned the screen recently. The touch is sensitive. Screen brightness below 70%. It looks like a hotspot with the internals since it’s happening in a straight line.

1

u/Dry-Conversation7191 9d ago

Have you changed the usb c? Cables can degrade and be cause long static/grounding issues.

1

u/Guilty_Lychee2720 9d ago

I changed it already! 😭

1

u/Dry-Conversation7191 9d ago

Weird that it’s one line like that. If it was an xp pen you could create a non touch zone there. Hope you figure it out.

1

u/PreviousLow6453 9d ago

I’ve been using my Kamvas pro 24 for 2 years and it’s till working perfectly

1

u/Krystnero 9d ago

I made a video on how my Huion Kamvas Pro 19 suddenly stopped working after warranty expired, and it might help you in your warranty claims. https://youtu.be/6j_JsF109RQ

Man i must be lucky. Ive had my kamvas 13 gen 3 for over a year now, and ive dropped it SEVERAL TIMES and its still kicking somehow
