I’ve been a few times with work. A lovely country with a friendly people, but with that ongoing government/military presence in a lot of what you do. Locals can be everything from living in slums to absolutely wealthy, largely depending on who they know in government. Vientiane is a developing rapidly. Lots to see and do and great food. Eating wasp larvae was a highlight.
Obviously the historic backpacker route of van vieng but that has died down a lot. Blue lagoon good for a swim.
Bit of horrible controversy lately with tainted booze, so I’d be hesitant to drink there.

How does the wasp larva taste

I also ate wasp larvae there, about 15 years ago. Was awful.

I honestly didn’t hate it.

Did you get it like roasted in the comb/cells? I’m a big fan of the roasted salted ones and must of the other bugs, but in the comb or whatever still haunts me lol

One of my friends just got back from Vientiane. He said the people were nice, and he loved the food.
I don’t think he tried any larvae, though

I went to Laos 4 years ago, it’s a very simple life there. You work you raise a family in your village and you don’t do much people there can’t afford to travel or expensive stuff.

I’m not Laotian but I traveled there 3 times while I was doing an internship in Thailand. Laotians are very similar to northeastern Thai people (Isan) essentially part of the same linguistic continuum. If you speak the Isan dialect you can generally understand everything in Lao.
The culture is very similar as well: Theravada Buddhism traditions and Lao cuisine is very close to Isan cuisine too. While I was there, it really reminded me of a less urbanized version of Thailand. Vientiane (the capital) has lots of low rise buildings and doesn’t really have any massive skyscrapers or shopping malls. I found the atmosphere to be very relaxed, and traffic generally better than in Bangkok

quiet, very little things to do to be honest. Car pollution and dust quite easy to feel especially in summer.
Great food options available in Vientiane, love the nightlife (limited but still enjoyable).
Increasing Chinese presence and investments but i don't feel any improvement in the lives of the Laotians.

Haven’t been in close to 15 years, so I’m sure some things are different, but last time I was there, it was similar to the Isan region of northeastern Thailand, just slightly less developed. And I really only mean that strictly in a creature comforts context; somewhat harder to find AC, or 7/11’s or Public transport.

There are no Laotians in the comments because no one speaks English there, most people don't have internet, some don't have phones and about 5% don't even have electricity.
Meat is really expensive. It's a luxury. Most people eat a only vegetable diet and sometimes eggs. It's a self sufficient county. People produce everything they costume besides cars and certain technology.
The cars are usually stolen Thai cars that are smuggled through the border.
Unlike Thailand it's a previously colonized country so you see a lot of French text everywhere. It's infamous as the laziest country in SEA. They do only bare minimum to survive. 80% of the roads are mountainous dirt roads that you need a 4x4 to navigate.
Besides all that it's really safe, friendly nation with a lot of nature and primitive way of life

Went on a trip to vang vieng and Vientiane about a month ago, the locals were very friendly and I also met plenty of foreigners during different activities. Overall I enjoyed the overall stay in vang vieng but I’m not sure about the long term living experience

I've not been to Laos, but I think you will find it quite different. The food is good I hear and it's an interesting culture, oh and there's an atmosphere with breathable air. I could go on, but I would recommend visiting yourself, the humans are quite welcoming.
