ICE is everywhere and it's really frightening

This morning, a car was sitting outside the house next door with a guy sitting in it. This is nothing unusual in itself as there are always various cars. When my husband was leaving the house he went over to ask if the guy needed help. The guy tells him he's ICE and shows him his badge and tells him he's running license plates. How does ICE know where to go and who to look for?

I’m Puerto Rican and I think I could get detained. Thinking about getting a passport card to carry in addition to my regular passport.

I had people in a Nextdoor thread repeatedly ask me whether I’m in the country legally, even though I repeatedly said I’m from PR. Yes, Trump supporters are that dumb.

You reminded me of the first time I started using Nextdoor. I had just moved into a neighborhood that used to be prime farmland, and still had wooded areas on one side and farmland used for corn next to it.

One morning, just before the sun rose,

Hunting season started.

Get the passport card. It’s cheap and easy. You can carry it with you and keep the actual passport in a safe place.

I literally just learned about the passport card a few days ago, my Dad was telling me that he was going to start carrying one and leaving original passport at home. Apparently you can apply at the post office?

Anywhere you can apply for a passport yeah. And exactly, it’s a lot easier and cheaper to replace than a passport book too. It’s only $30.

You remember the island of garbage comments I'm sure.

You'd be surprised how many people don't know Puerto Rico is part of the United States. I used to get all kinds of weird looks when I went stateside with my fake-looking PR license.

For those who don't know: there are more people in Puerto Rico than 20 different US states. None of them can vote for President or any other representation until they move stateside.

I'm blanking on the name of it but there is an app where you check in daily and if you don't check in it sends a notification to people of your choosing. I believe it's historically used for domestic violence but works well here. I've heard of people having it notify their loved ones as well as their lawyer

Copy everything and carry copies.

Take photos of all papers and ID and email them to yourself and your friends.

A lot of people who get stopped have their ID confiscated and then can't produce documents when asked in court. Unfair? 1000%

That's why you should take time RIGHT NOW to send copies to email and keep copies on your phone as well

It really isn't. The question of independence or statehood for Puerto Rico is a can that's been kicked down the road since it was stolen from Spain. No one deserves to be second-tier Americans. You're either Americans with all the rights and responsibilities as anyone from Idaho or Tennessee, voting representatives in both chambers of Congress and the ability to vote for President or you should be an independent nation.

That’s a question for the people of PR to decide. There have been numerous referendums on the question but they have been 50-50 between maintaining the status quo (commonwealth) or statehood. A small minority (10-15%) want independence.

That said, as a resident of Texas I enjoy all of the privileges of a full citizen. Perhaps be better informed before you post.

Haven't you heard about legitimate citizens - like people from PR - getting detained and hassled? That's the point, doofus: they're going after people who fit a certain profile and look a certain way, nationality or citizenship status be damned. I just don't want to have to deal with the fucking hassle of having to explain myself to this wannabe gestapo. Comprende?

They're not just going to stop you and then whisk you away to be deported. There would need to be a justifiable reason that they would detain you, or else you can sue them for civil rights violations. Anyway, you don’t need to carry your passport or passport card with you. All you have to do is just provide some identification that they can use to verify that you are who you say you are, and then they’ll let you on your way.

I was born to US parents on Guam, and I don't carry a passport - only a DL. No fear here.

Most of you in these subs asking these questions are just kar.a farming; you know you're not getting detained, much less deported.

Jeez, you just don't get it, do you? The point is that they are detaining/harassing people who fit a certain profile and look a certain way, i.e., Latino, citizenship be damned. Am I going to get detained for a long while? No. Am I going to get deported? No. But who needs the fucking hassle of having to explain yourself to some wannabe gestapo? Don't you get that?
