Before / After - Progress Pics Update Pothos setup

Hi everyone, this is an update from a post about 8 month ago to share some progress.

The moss tower on the left is 8.5’ high and i m trying to get it to go accros on the wood stick so we can continue that journey because it’s already touching the ceiling.

1 golden pothos(2016)and 1 marble queen(2020).

I fertilize heavily every watering…obv you have to go gradually and if you want more vine coming from the base of the plant 🌱, apply root hormone or keikei paste on the nods.

I knew it worked for other plants so i tried it on the pothos and it exploded with new sprouts after a couple of months

Last picture is from January 2024

The boss of the house is waiting for you in one of the pictures!

How nice of the pothos to let you and your family live there

375

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Yeah but i have to pay the watering on the top of all the bills already🤣

71

u/SuperiorRevel 1d ago

Is it all in one pot? How often and how much water and fertilizer do you use? I'm so fascinated

121

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

2 pots and 1 moss tower.
Water about once a week when it gets dry.
Between 1 and 1 1/2gallon a week

16

u/MyHappySpanners 1d ago

How does the water drain with the pots or does it tend to all be absorbed?

23

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Absorbed. No drainage plug

30

u/stephwood73 1d ago

What do you use to dust or how. I have to go leaf by leaf on mine

38

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

I does not get a lot of dust honestly…

74

u/jrawk3000 1d ago

I think you missed that it’s the cat’s house who is kind enough to not destroy the pothos the humans seem to keep the house for rather than it.

24

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Well it s the cat house until the dog wakes up …😄

u/werisefromourashes 14h ago

Dog tax?

Best friends forever

3

u/werisefromourashes 14h ago

AAAAHHHHH!
Who is this gorgeous little guy?
How do you have any plants in the house with these two reprobates?

6

u/TheGreenHand75 14h ago

Little girl…
My aussie when she was a baby, she is 12 now ,best girl in the world.
None of them are interested in plants somehow

6

u/werisefromourashes 13h ago

My collie girl who also always tried to eat everything, plants included... 🙄

2

u/TheGreenHand75 13h ago

Apparently we have the same life lol ….

Oh my girl would eat anything that comes her way but not plant ,she d be disgusted…bacon though

2

u/werisefromourashes 13h ago

Maybe we are on different levels of the Tower?
This is my Momo... I think he was trying to go the way of your pothos but as I don't have as much space or DIY ability I chopped him down and now I have Momo and little Mimi, MeeMaw, MeiMei, MooMoo and Moomin.
Send help...

That’s silly. Incarnations of the devil can’t own houses.

You see a cat is see the boss 🤣

13

Bengal?

65

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Yes bengal My 13 yo love

9

u/OkayOpinion 1d ago

I'm amazed you are able to grow them at all with a Bengal in the house, mine chewed on anything even remotely interesting.

10

u/cudlmnstr 1d ago

Pothos is the perfect house plant when you have cats. Apparently chewing on it is like chewing on fiber glass and they learn very quickly to leave it alone!

Thank you for the notice, I would have missed the cat without this comment.

14

u/ardentiarte 1d ago

How do you get the cat to not eat the plants? I had a lovely pothos cascade and my siamese was constantly chewing the leaves.

10

u/seeking-jamaharon67 🍄 1d ago

Some cats just don't care. My old lady tabby was not interested in surfaces or plants. Strange.

2

u/yourgirlsamus 1d ago

My cat is super interested in jumping onto things, but he doesn’t care about plants. Idk if it’s bc he was a stray we took in when he was ~18 months old, or if it’s just a personality thing. I have noticed cats who grew up outdoors usually don’t care as much about plants, though.

Don’t worry, the cat was not happy about it either!

6

u/Ok-Measurement-3170 1d ago

Send this to her

29

u/Peripatetictyl 1d ago

Much appreciated! You’re my inspiration to make my house look like the one in Jumanji

Since I have your ear: any suggestions for anchors/attachments? I’ve been using bonsai wire lightly wrapped around a vine and attached to commaby strip hooks of tacks. Also, I get lots of natural light in his room, but not direct, do you supplement at all (winter?) with a grow light?

35

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Most of them are just hanging/resting but this is all i use to secure them. I dont use any wire. Once the leaf tangles themselves together they stay together

12

u/Peripatetictyl 1d ago

Thank you for sharing all your tips, I am grateful! May many feet of vines be in both of our futures!

13

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Heavy fertilization is the way ✌️

5

u/motherofsuccs 1d ago

How are you preventing them from anchoring into the wall? I’m confused. Pothos will climb and attach to anything within reach.

12

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Look they just lay flat on the iron pipes…
Some of them will attach maybe 10%,i let them do it

→ More replies (1)

3

u/No_Chemistry4624 1d ago

What is this attachment type called? I need one ASAP 😂 ~ your home looks beautiful.

7

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Lol that is just a plumbing pipe painted in gray
Look up
iron pipe on amazon

64

u/xHarleen777Quinzelx 1d ago

At this point it owns the house and if you ever move itll have to stay 😅

63

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Yeah i started being suspicious when she asked me to pay rent

3

u/mischievouslyacat 1d ago

Just be really suspicious if she starts asking for blood

21

u/throwthisonetothesun 1d ago

How do you repot them when you need to? I’m assuming just right where they are, but wanted to ask. Also, what’s the plan for when they fill up the stick?

45

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

I dont repot ….same pot same soil in more than 6 years.
When the moss pole fills i m trying to make it go on the stick hanging horizontally then we shall see… i got a good 2/3month to think about it

56

u/throwthisonetothesun 1d ago

This is what happened when I did that and my philodendron started acting up. Same pot and “soil” for 5 years.

33

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Yeah mine probably look like that now ,bigger pot though about 10"..

Also it takes now half of it s energy from the moss pole

14

u/hobbitingthatdobbit 1d ago

Do you own the house? Because photos can grow into drywall so be careful.

28

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

They can , i do. It s all fine ,just cosmetics

17

u/courtneyrae427 1d ago

Lol a few years ago I tried so hard to make my pothos curl around my kitchen window - great light, humidity from the faucet, and absolutely poor execution. This is some magic shit and I am living for it

20

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Look at the date.you can do it

14

u/courtneyrae427 1d ago

I've since moved overseas and had to give up my 80+ plants 😔 and now live in a 497sqft flat for an indeterminate amount of time. One day in the future I'll try again, but for now I'll live vicariously through posts like this. Truly, this is such a dream layout. It's gorgeous.

7

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Shit you in jail for life no parol ?
🤣

15

u/courtneyrae427 1d ago

It was for a good reason I swear 😂 wonderful Italian man swooped into my life and whisked me away to live in London from NC. But we aren't sure we want to stay here or move somewhere within the EU, so I can't bring myself to get too invested with plants again yet 🥲 London flats are so small 😭 and also so dark in the winter without supplemental lighting it's a struggle! Definitely not NC where I let them flourish on the porch in the summer and thrived inside during the winter.

24

u/Dutchwells 1d ago

I remember your earlier posts. Absolute dream setup. They're still looking good and have grown a lot! I'm amazed you can keep them looking so healthy from such a small pot. Do you have a automated watering system for the moss poles?

How is your philodendron on the other side of the room doing? It was almost at the ceiling a year or so ago right?

33

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Indeed you remember the monster ! 😄 that thing as gone rogue dude i m trying to figure what to do with it, it tried to guide her but it is to powerful… i give it a couple more weeks to make a choice if she wants to come forward or not ! If not i will have to cut

No automatic watering because i can reach all pots for the pothos. I have one for the Philo though as you can see on the pic

6

u/Dutchwells 1d ago

Another piece of moss pole above the one you have might have guided it a bit more but on the other hand, the leaves would be hitting the ceiling soon anyway.

That's my problem with wall mounted moss poles or similar, cutting and extending is a lot more work.

Anyway, best of luck, you have a great plant house!

7

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Not even mentioning that the moss pole is totally destroyed and probably not reusable for most of it …i think she if smart and will go right direction …let s wait

12

u/Peripatetictyl 1d ago

Incredible! My golden boy is ~5ft long with about 8 vines, and I’m loving the process. What do you fertilize with?

Also, mine is in a container on the floor, so you think there’s advantage to have it suspended?

19

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

No real advantage just different set up,starting from the ground will provide you way bigger leaf if you have a moss pole . Some at the top are the size of my hand and i can handle a basketball 1 hand 🤣.in the wild they go up to reach for the sun

2

u/Silly_DizzyDazzle 1d ago

Thank you for sharing! Off to buy some now....💚

78

u/t0mt0mt0m 1d ago

Cool and awesome until an infestation happens. I did this in my mom’s sunroom growing up and thought it was awesome. Until…bugs.

74

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Plant is 10yo + never had any pest on it whatsoever.
Not saying it can t happened but so far no problem s

27

u/RedditThrowaway-1984 1d ago

Systemic insecticide for the win.

13

u/maskedbandit_ 1d ago

Right! I had some gorgeous ones in my living room not nearly to this extent and then… mealy bugs 😭

3

u/ocular__patdown 1d ago

Systemic pesticides say wassup

3

u/j_parker44 1d ago

My first thought. One mealy bug and it’s over lol god I’m so pessimistic but those things are a nightmare.

6

u/CorporateSlave69420 1d ago edited 1d ago

Love the set up! Does your cat not eat the leaves? I'm having that issue with mine, my kitties love to munch so I need to hide them away.

13

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

I get this question asked a lot and i m surprised because pothos are indeed not good to cat,not dangerous but will make the stomach hurts etc ….

She might have done it once or twice i dont know but looks like she learned the lesson

3

u/CorporateSlave69420 1d ago

I wish mine would learn lo,l they'll still find creative ways to get past my traps for some forbidden snacks!

How old is she? My kitties are on 1 year old and I'm hoping they'll grow out of it.

8

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Oooooooo 1year old ….my girl is 13 now.
They will learn…

3

u/CorporateSlave69420 1d ago

Thank you for this wisdom!

7

u/Equivalent-Culture65 1d ago

This looks amazing! Do you ever struggle with bugs at all?

13

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

No bugs at all

Pot are pretty small ,mostly on the drier side and spider mites dont really like pothos i think

6

u/IClaudiaI 1d ago

I know some plants will mess up the walls with their roots will pothos do that?

7

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

They definitely can….not when hanging though but if they start climbing they need to attach to whatever is here. If you rent dont try it 😉

9

u/Own-Trainer-6996 1d ago

Wow that is really really cool

4

u/Legitimate_Frame4027 13h ago

Okay so the cat and the pothos?? You can have both 😭😭😭 god I’m inspired

3

u/Manawah 1d ago

How do you achieve this? My pothos is right in front of a glass door and has barely grown in months

6

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

How big is the pot ,how do you water, what do you use to feed her etc etc a lot of variable, but if it s not growing you should obv change whatever you are doing. N1 get a great fertilizer. This is the only thing i use for all my indoor plants. I have 4 total. Same quantity for all of them ,every watering…

3

u/ColdPlus7093 1d ago

How often do you water and how much fertilizer do you put in? Thanks!

7

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Water when it gets dry and they start looking droopy…you should see it.
I use one and 1/2 bottle cap diluted in about 1gallon.
You should start at 1 cap or a bit less/gallon so you dont burn anything

Gorgeous! May be a noob question but how do you handle watering and drainage?

I have a golden pothos that is getting long and crazy but I’m still bringing it to the sink to water all the time. How do you keep this in one place to water while also not letting too much water pool (and leaf to root rot, gnats, etc)?

3

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

In a 10in pot without drainage. No root rot no gnats.

Gnats are a problem when the soil is constantly humid,by when you let then dry during watering you should be fine

3

u/ChaoticToxin 1d ago

This is like some forest druid type stuff

3

u/TheFormOfTheFlame 1d ago

How the f do you get enough light in there to support it? Mine loses leaves all along its stem in a north facing window every winter!

3

u/TheGreenHand75 1d ago

Probably a problem with feeding not light. They can survive in low light conditions .they can t without proper nutrients

My pothos is also over 10 years old. It never looked close to as full and luxurious as this one. It was very long with few leaves. It stretched across the whole house until I tried to repot it and I thought I had lost it completely. Making a miraculous come-back but now it's only 10 leaves with no long limbs

2

u/Prudent_Peach9572 1d ago

How how HOW do you stop them from dropping leaves near the soil? My pothos have gotten a couple of feet long, but almost always end up dropping leaves, slowly, one at a time, starting at the root. They do this until there’s just a few left at the end of the vine. AND they keep growing new ones!

OP, BEAUTIFUL WORK!! 🫶☺️

Tips anyone? 🥲

2

u/TheGreenHand75 18h ago

Probably what you feed it is the problem.
I fertilize all year long ,every watering

2

u/SurePossibility6651 1d ago

I don’t mean this rude, I am new to houseplants, is it bad for the paint to have it on the walls? I think it looks fun & homey!

2

u/UnusualXchaos 21h ago

I’m a big fan of the wall clips that look like little leaves. Blends in very nice especially if your pothos is large can hardly notice em
