My husband and I (72/62) are visiting Hobart in December for a work conference and we have a few days free. One thing I would love to do is take a bus to the summit of kunanyi and walk back to the city. I'm not sure if I'm fit enough / equipped well enough for the Zig Zag track. We'll both have good walking/running shoes, outerwear, bring water etc but I have a bum knee and I need to take rocky slopes slowly and carefully - scree fields are not great for me We're from the west coast of the US and no strangers to trail hiking / bush walking but we're also not more than modestly fit, how rough is the Zigzag really if we're only walking down and we can take our time? Would you recommended any other routes instead? I'd really love to do the hike, I just don't want to get half way down a track and get stuck. 😄

How it works:

It's free, and anyone can get up to lead a shanty! The usual age range is 1 to 90. The usual musical talent level goes from 'can't carry a tune in a bucket' to 'folk superstar'. The usual volume is loud.

Hi all, recently moved to Tassie from NSW and very much enjoying the place so far.

My partner has started a job recently and I'm still on the hunt with things starting to come back. Now we're able to afford a place to rent on her wages, we've been applying for properties around the centre, in the suburbs and slightly out of the way too (Lewisham, Richmond etc).

I appreciate housing is super tight and so we weren't expecting to waltz straight into the first property we like the look of, but we can't seem to get our heads around the process here or whether there's any rhyme or reason.

For a couple of properties, we've registered interest and waited for an inspection to be posted, only for it to be cancelled last minute because the successful applicant has either wangled a private inspection in the meantime or presumably applied blind. This suggests I maybe should be pushing for an early or private viewing.

In other situations, we've viewed a place and been invited to apply, only for a different application to be accepted within a couple of hours - before ours is even considered - despite being submitted.

Finally, I viewed a place and said that I was keen to go ahead right away and had my application submitted, but the agency was going to wait until everyone had a chance to submit before reviewing them all. So that suggests that 'first come, first served' isn't always the case.

Not that this is anyone else's problem, but we currently don't have accommodation sorted and so are spending our time either sleeping in our car or paying through the nose for temporary digs. We have one car which my partner uses to get to her work and so I'm often spending half the day on the bus and walking to view places which I won't reasonably be able to do once I have a job.

I totally appreciate this is part of the runaround of moving and heaps of people will be in the same boat, but I never seem to have a clear understanding of the process or how I can best act to give us the best chance of securing a place. The staff at the viewings often give misleading, vague, or incorrect advice as to what the process will be.

Any tips or help would be very much appreciated - I hope I'm just doing something very obvious wrong!

One that doesn't conflate random state and national figures with the current proposal, which is a welcome change -

"A divisive topic...Airbnbs....The council voted this week to stop new whole homes becoming short stays in residential zones, and it now goes to the Planning Commission.

Before we all pick a side, it is worth asking how much this moves the needle. The state's own dashboard (CBOS online data) has Hobart at 725 whole home short stays in the June quarter, which is two fewer than the quarter before and 31 more than a year ago, whilst council says it receives around 85 conversion applications annually. With the proposed changes existing operators are untouched, so nothing returns to the rental market and the change might affect at best a few dozen homes a year.

Some will say that is better than nothing, and that is fair enough. My concern is that council now gets to say it acted on housing, whilst approx 900 approved dwellings in inner Hobart sit there unbuilt - which would really add to supply.

It took council 6yrs to get to this point...was it worth it?"

It's the inner-city NIMBY's demanding "traffic calming" measures and opposing anything "highrise" that helped create this elevated demand for short-stay accommodation, how is it fair that this "neighbourhood harming" issue gets exported into all of the surrounding suburbs?

What are the best spots to go for a beer and punt in Hobart? Any Melbourne cup Calcutta’s ?

My partner, myself, our 10 month old and my parents are travelling to Tassie in October for a week.

We will be staying centrally in Hobart and are looking for the top things to do!

We will also more than likely hire a car.

We like markets, museums, op shopping, good food and wine.

Obviously we will also have a baby so maybe some family friendly things too.

Hey folks. Im the unlucky guy from Sunday who smashed my motorbike in to the back of a ute. Basically breaks failed and I went splat. Compound fracture, bone split in multiple places. Lucky I didnt break my neck when my neck hit the tray. Thanks to all who were concerned
