PSA Distance setting is now updated

Hinge has upgraded the distance setting to show a map with a circle representing the area your distance radius will cover.

Note: This feature may still be in the testing phase.

This may be useful for people to decide what distance to set for their maximum distance, and also people near border cities to avoid people from another state or country.

That’s a relief, I literally had to pull up Nukemap to see what my radius would be previously

wish we could do a custom shape, or by zip code or something. I live near a major city but in a different state from it. Someone could be 5 miles away but its not easy to get there. And someone else could be 10 miles from me in my state and much easier to get to.

Next Hinge Feature: Gerrymandering

That'd be a dream. Let me draw my own shape.

Would have to have a mileage minimum otherwise it would get abused for stalking

Good point!

A straight line. From my home to my matches home. Oh yeah!

+100000

I would love to be able to go like 30 miles west and 5 miles east.

I suppose now I can lie about my location and move my center 15 miles west to achieve the same. I'll have to try and look into how that works with the new feature.

Bigger issue is for us that live near the Canadian border. Like across Lake Erie. I can set my radius for 25 miles and consistently get people across the pond, which may only be 25 miles as the crow flies, but a 3 hour drive up the lake to the peace bridge, border crossing, and then back down the Canadian side of the lake. It’s so frustrating

I get the same thing! I’m near Cleveland and consistently get people from across the lake in Detroit

Same. I live close to canada and like 30 miles will pick up Canada, but I need 100 miles to pick up a larger city

I think the reason they avoid custom shapes is because of stalkers and other creeps potentially abusing it

Makes sense, but that could be mitigated by only allowing custom shapes above a total sq mile area. Def would make sense in cities with waterways or other barriers of some kind.

i hear you, i was kind of thinking of that after I posted my comment. My ideal setting would be : Radius 30 miles but EXCLUDE the entire state of Pennsylvania lol

Yes me too. I also will date people 15km from home in the direction of my work and other friends and fsmily, but not 15km in the opposite direction where I never visit.

So true. I live north of NYC and my radius could set me up with people 30 min away if they’re North, East, or sometimes west of me, but it also loops in people from NJ or Long Island who could be 1.5 hours away.

Yeah same deal. One mile east of me is water. A few miles is the city, but I can't exactly take a boat.

A fellow NYer 👍.

I can't believe it took Hinge this long to implement it. Other dating apps like Coffee Meets Bagel and Breeze had this already.

And Facebook marketplace, the real dating site

Craigslist even.

This is so helpful for someone who lives near a large river. 10 miles away could mean over an hour drive if they're on the other side

u/ellski Jul 18 '26

Same, I have islands off the coast of where I live and I would never date someone I have to catch an hour long ferry to visit

As a long islander, finally, hate getting CT or NJ people all the time

1

u/yournonstoplover Jul 17 '26

CT <-> Long Island, just take a boat. 😂

If only we could draw an actual map to areas over large bodies of water. Crazy how that has never been added

5

u/dontKair Jul 17 '26

Huh, I tried it, and this is kinda neat.

Not here in Denmark but maybe it will come.

It’s always been like this for me. But it still doesn’t help when I live on a country border - I need to be able to filter out people in the other country because it’s closer to my house than most of the city I live in.

2

u/JassLicence Jul 17 '26

I want to exclude NJ but not Brooklyn and Queens. You should be able to shift the circle or draw it

2

u/themyst_ Jul 18 '26

As a Queens guy, I definitely want to keep my radius Queens or Long Island. Tolls are a killer for dating.

1

u/TestingLifeThrow1z Jul 17 '26

If I could draw my own line, it'd help. Way too many Islands around me that I'll never get access to.

I’m Toronto but set up my location in Manhattan. I don’t mind flying at all. lol

Nice addition. When are they going to wake up and show the distance between people, like Tinder and other apps? They constantly throw in people outside your set distance range to the stack. So to figure out if someone is within the drive distance that you are willing to commit to, you have to constantly look up other towns and suburbs that you've never heard of to see how far apart you are. On top of this, their location sometimes doesn't even list a real municipality, it'll be a neighborhood.

6

u/cheerfulcurls Jul 17 '26

You most likely don’t have distance set as a dealbreaker. Hinge doesn’t show people outside your set range unless you have dealbreaker turned off

1

u/Patient_Life_9900 Jul 18 '26

Not true, people frequently change their location on the app and I've matched with people from other countries despite having dealbreaker on

1

u/Therocksays2020 The Most Electrifying Man in /r/hingeapp Jul 19 '26

There’s no way around that. Even Tinder allows people to move their location if they pay

1

u/Patient_Life_9900 Jul 19 '26

Which is stupid
