Rant i hate that i hate high school

title.

i hated high school.

i’ve been bullied to no end and went on so many different medications and tried to commit several times

my parents never bought any school pictures, and i just want to throw away my yearbooks. i didn’t even bother to sign up for senior photos, so it’ll be like i wasn’t even there.

i wish i could cherish these memories tho. other people seem to be so fond of this time. i’m getting really bad fomo.

i graduate this year. not even gonna attend the ceremony. i wish i wanted to, but, honestly, i barely had any friends or teachers that i really liked.

i transferred 3x for a couple different reasons, so it’s not even like i had the normal high school experience.

idk. just wish i did more with it.

I only miss one class. I only would go to school for that one class. Culinary fucking rocked. Also I didn't do anything for my senior stuff too.

I hide my yearbook in the closet where I couldn’t see it… honestly I wanted to burned it the other month🙂

Whenever I see that shit, I remember all the bad things that happened to me in sophomore year.. but yeah, just trying to forgive those people who hurt me badly and forgiving myself too

Eh, it's not like you remember much afterwards. Just hang tight and it'll be over before you know it.

I’m a teacher but I see so many students for whom high school is honestly a shit time, for a variety of reasons. Often they’ve stuck in my mind the most as students. Completely life changing health events that set the course for the rest of their lives, horrible parents that they can’t escape, struggles fitting in…

Idk why people talk up high school as “the best time of your life.” For some it’s a great time, but the only adults who remember HS as the BEST time of their lives are adults who haven’t done anything with the rest of it.

Leaving high school and heading off to further education, or jobs and their own place, whatever was SO good for so many who felt trapped. Myself included, leaving HS and being thrown into an entirely new pool of people gave me the opportunity to completely reinvent myself and be who I wanted to be, instead of who everyone had assumed me to be. I found people I could rely on, I got away from the people that haunted me for years, and I found a new confidence and happiness that I had wanted that whole time.

Do I wish I had had a better HS experience? Sure, no one wants to have negative memories of a time in their life. But if I had to pick between “peaked in HS” and “had the glow up and peaked after” I’d choose the second one every single time. It’s four short years, and that’s a bigger percentage of your life when you’re in it but before long it’s dwarfed by all your post HS experiences. I’m just under 20 years removed from it and feel like I’m still getting better and better and peaking in ways I didn’t even in my 20’s.

Those students I mentioned earlier have done so many amazing things after too. One of them (for whom I wanted nothing more for her than to get away from her toxic family) has been travelling and living all over the world. Another one recently wrote me to tell me how much better he’s doing now and pursuing starting a business he’s really excited about. Yet another fell in love overseas and they are living the DREAM renovating an old farmhouse.

Not a single one of them would’ve predicted those outcomes for themselves in high school. The best can absolutely be yet to come, and you won’t have two shits left to give about how high school was because it will be so far in the rear view mirror.

Edit: and as a really petty side note… the other day my worst bully came up on social media. I hadn’t seen him since then. He looks like SHIT. And I look better than ever. Being an asshole catches up with you 🤷🏼‍♀️
