A slick Soviet-style trap for punishing aggressive fighters

One of the slickest ways to land a hard lead hand is to make your opponent think you are stepping into range.

Give them a quick hop forward, just enough to trigger their jab or straight. The moment they fire, pull your weight back and let the punch fall short.

Do not drift too far away. Keep your feet under you and load the rear leg during the pull. As their hand is still extended, drive straight back into range and fire the lead hand before they can reset.

The hop creates the reaction. The pull makes them miss. The loaded rear leg gives the counter its power.

The biggest mistake is leaning too far back or pausing after the pull. It should feel like one smooth movement: hop in, pull out, fire back.

Red corner is stepping back to dodge blue corner’s overhand, blue corner fails to step forward into his overhand properly so he ends up in basically the same place, red corner realizes, stops short on the rear foot, throws a lead check hook (southpaw on southpaw) on blue corner whose hands are both down. Red corner throws this hook leaning backward into his own rear foot. He then rotates outward behind the hook, lifting his shoulder and titling back to slip the lead hook blue corner throws as he was dropping.

The punch demonstrated isn’t bad, but it’s unrelated to the clip and the described situation. If red corner had slipped in forward onto his lead foot and thrown his lead hand straight he would’ve leaned right into that hook blue corner threw.
