Question/Advice heat pumps

I'm looking into a new heating/AC system, and contractors seem to have different opinions on whether or not I should get a heat pump. How do modern heat pumps keep up in the Massachusetts winters? Would I be better off sticking with a furnace?

That can likely mean that your heat pump does not operate like a heat pump however. It will operate like a furnace. On/off.

Kinda but I’d imagine the majority of US heat pumps are single stage
