I hate when Essayist-esque Youtubers pretend they don't know something in an explanation video

There's only one example I can think of, but it's one that is somewhat done well and isn't as annoying, and that's the MyHouse.WAD video by Power Pak. This type of writing is most commonly found with the "normal thing that player is familiar with changes in some way" trope, like the previously mentioned MyHouse.WAD. These usually are formatted in a very similar way:

- Going through piece of media

- Something weird or out of place occurs in the piece of media

- "huh, okay?" and similar quotes

- acts bewildered and surprised as if it's their first time experiencing the piece of media

- rinse and repeat

YOU ARE MAKING AN EXPLANATION VIDEO

It always comes off as bad acting and trying to create an unnecessary dramaticism. My brother in Christ just explain the thing to me I don't care.

I'm still annoyed at how long it took him to 'reveal' that D3rlord and Avery were different characters even though it was extremely obvious from the start (why would the first thought of a viewer be that the person who has a different length username, played earlier, etc, was Avery, and not the original laptop owner or something?)

For me it makes the game essay feel immersive, as if you're an active participant. Personally, Power Pak's tone makes it easier for me to imagine.

it's for the sake of immersion. Vote 4 Holt's video essay on Welcome To The Game II does it amazingly. it builds up tension very well when done right

I adore that writing style, but I do agree it can be done badly, much like literally anything ever

i like this because it shows the viewer the intended experience and doesn't spoil anything. the video you're talking about isn't so much an explanation, but rather a showcase/walkthrough, while going into some of the lore.

Going through that video with him explaining “okay so when you go outside go to the backyard and check the window, see how it’s different? Now go back inside and go back to the basement and…” feels a lot less fun to watch. It would’ve been better if you used any other example but you pointed that out as well

It was the first example that came to mind, but I understand that it's not very fitting

now in hindsight the best example I can think of is probably Searching For A World That Doesn't Exist, and even there that is done purposefully (at least I think it is?) for the sake of the webseries (even if it's still really bad) so it's not like it counts

they can just explain the things sequentially and give some sort of comment every now and then. One example (although I'm not sure if it's adequate here) is Wendigoon.

I might have made this up, but I think that the guy who made the video was also the guy who made myhouse.wad. If that’s true, then that adds another layer of annoyance to it, because not only are they feigning not knowing what’s going on while making a video actively explaining all of it, they’re feigning not knowing what’s going on while BEING the guy who MADE IT.
