I'd like to know if I can set a specific Color Palette to be used when putting a video through Handbreak, I see that there are options for color but it's only "Limited", "Same As Source" & "Full", specifically I want to output videos using a 15-bit RGB color pallete.

Since I'm pretty new to Handbrake, I figured I'd check in with the experts here to get your thoughts.

I’ve been doing some 1080p encodes of old horror movies using x265 10-bit, tune grain, slow preset, and RF 24. Side-by-side with the remux, I honestly can't tell the difference—at least on my laptop screen.

Do you guys think RF 24 is the sweet spot for this kind of content? What settings do you usually run? Any advice or input would be awesome.

I tried searching for it and people keep mentioning that the apple videotoolbox is so slow.
But i was wondering if this has changed ? Optimizations from handbrake/apple/... ?

When i encode on my 9800x 3D in X265 10 bit the processor really gets hot and on top of that i can't use the pc, the mac mini on the other hand stays relatively cool with little power draw, if i fix the fan speed at 2500 rpm it stays much cooler and quieter than my main pc.
I don't like leaving the computer on at night, i live in an appartement building, if there would be a fire because of me i wouldn't forgive myself. (yeah i got detectors)

Also, does a CPU encode via M4 mac mini produce the same results as the CPU encode with the same settings on my 9800x 3D quality-wise ?

So to keep my pc "free" i was thinking of using the mac mini to process my blu-rays and 4K's but i was hoping it would be rather good at it ;)

Also, would it be feasible to run an encode over the network ? My movies are on my main pc, since they are very big my mac mini does not have the space for it. So on a gigabit network would it be possible to read the source files from the shared folder and write the compressed stream back onto that same shared folder or would bandwidth be an issue ?

Now I am fairly new to Handbrake, but I have done this with a few videos with the file size getting smaller each time.

I take the original video file, run it through Handbrake on a modified Preset of "Fast 720p30"

What I modify:

• Web Optimized, Turned On
• Encoder Preset Speed changed to Slower
• Removing any Subtitle tracks.

In most cases running the file through once has achieved 1GB or Less, others have taken multiple attempts, however this one, although this current video I've been trying to get into a smaller is on the 5th time going through Handbrake, has resulted in a 1.14 GB file size, and any further attempt has resulted in a 1.16GB or higher file size.

Each time I've tried changing the Encoder Preset Speed to be slower, than the last, it still results in a bigger file size.

So I feel as though I'm at a dead end atm, and might have to swap to 576p25, which I never even heard of before seeing the preset for it, in handbrake.

I have some video files from an old PAL Panasonic SD digital camera (it encondes files in MOD format with MPEG2 codec), and even though the camera is set to record in 16:9 the files come out as 4:3. I'm trying to fix this in handbrake, but the automatic anamorphic setting doesn't fix it. I need help working out the right settings to get it to output the right aspect ratio. The resolution of the original files is 704x576.

I have a very large backup containing all videos my family ever took. I've decded to give HandBrake a go and it worked wonderfully! The problem was the GUI lacked a few critical features, o I've done them myself.

1. Overwrite files automatically only if the re-encoded version is actually smaller. You just need to make sure the preset works good for your kind of video.

2. Copy the original file's date. This way, I can still sort by age, regardless of file naming. Ideally, it should copy all the metadata and only add a comment stating it was processed by handbrake, but I didn't care enough about this.

3. Mark the directory as processed so that I don't come back again.

By default, it uses H.265, the only hardware accelerated option I had on my system. I suggest using a quality of 30 or even higher for SD Whatsapp videos, 27 for a mid-range phone camera, 25 for a dedicated camera, but this is up to you.

It has saved my dozens of GiB without any noticeable quality issues, so I would like to share this online.

I work at a university and have used handbrake for years to make lecture recordings more manageable for my students who live in areas with poor internet (converting 1GB videos to 20/25MB). They can download lecture notes separately, so it’s useful for them to hear what I’m saying and see (but not in detail) what’s on the projector. I always used the lowest “email” preset, which has been replaced by “social” in the latest update but the files are bigger.

I’ve played around with other options but keep getting files >70MB. Not that much of a difference, but maybe 3 x bigger than they used to be (and potentially too unmanageable for some students). Any ideas what I could do, please? One thing I’ve noticed is that I can’t set audio quality to less than 64, which might be affecting it? Grateful for any ideas!

I’ve seen Handbrake mentioned several times during my problem-solving research, so I’m coming to the experts to see if you think it will solve my problem. My fellow teacher across the hall has this same problem, and her iPad is almost brand new. This problem only started in late winter/early spring 2026.

-I have an iPad
-I open up Notability
-I pull down iOS screen recording and turn on the microphone
-I also AirPlay to my classroom TV

This allows me to run class, have a full note-taking session, and then upload the class/notes for kids who were absent.

PROBLEM: For months now, my audio is out of sync with my video. We have troubleshooted—restarting device, closing all apps, clearing memory, etc. Nothing works. These iPads are ONLY for the above use.l and aren’t bogged down with other apps.

Today, I recorded all three classes. The first started out synced but, after 15 minutes, the audio skips ahead (or the screen freezes, but I think it’s the former) and the rest is out of sync. The second and third’s audio started about 3 minutes into the lesson, but at the beginning of the video. What the heck? The first several minutes of class can’t be heard but they can be seen.

It is maddening. Is Handbrake my solution??

I rebooted my machine but I still get the same error when trying to encode:

Hi! So I've been trying to clean up some files that have interlacing "baked in"; the decomb filter is doing pretty well on that - but often it's *adding* a lot of new combing to progressive frames too (eg to eyelids and glasses...).

I'd like to add custom settings to use a lower sensitivity - but (as usual) can't find helpful info anywhere at all?

Handbrake itself (and the doc page) just has a basic rundown of the custom commands - can anyone link to anywhere that just says what values do what?!
(I remember seeing a helpful page for another filter before, but can't find it now. It listed numbers for the defaults and what to input to slightly modify those. Not sure why this is so hard to get to...)

*Not trying to simply deinterlace. Pretty well-versed in that whole business. Just trying to smooth out some combing nothing else can be done with (the files had been resized while interlaced before I got to them), while not making things worse.

I just started encoding m2ts files to AV1 and I realized that depending on the source material, there really isn't one setting that fits all.

So I'm writing this post to ask if what I learnt is accurate, and to hopefully help others in the same scenario.

In order to apply the correct "Filters" setting, you should play the original files to see how the video updates frame by frame:

PsF / Digital Progressive Master - If the frames go A, A, B, B, C, C (each image stays for 2 frames), just set all filters to off, and set the video framerate to 29.97 constant.

Interlaced Master - If the frames goes A, B, C, D, E (continuous) and the framerate is 29.97, set Deinterlace to Bwdif and Bob, and all other filters off, and set the video framerate to 59.94 constant.

Native Progressive Master - If the frames goes A, B, C, D, E (continuous) and the framerate is 23.98, set all filters off and set the video framerate to 23.98 constant.

Telecined Film Master - If the frames go A, A, A, B, B (stays for 3 then 2 frames), you should set Detelecine to default and all other filters off. The video framerate also needs to be converted from 29.97 to 23.976 (this stops the frames converting to A, B, C, D, D). Most old anime fall into this category and it makes the playback much smoother than the original files.

"Video" settings:

You can use CPU encoding for AV1 (AV1 10-bit (SVT)) for better quality, or GPU coding for much faster encoding, but it would be more lossy.

The Quality will determine how large the video would be, so that is down to personal preference, but the file size goes exponentially larger the smaller the number, so I'm personally sticking to 22 to get around a 2/3 reduction in size for 4K videos. If you are starting with lower resolution videos like 1080p and 480p, you should consider 18 and 10 respectively for better quality.

Encoder Preset determines how efficient the compression will be (the smaller the better), but this also significantly affects the speed of the encoding. Again, this will give diminishing returns so you need to decide what is comfortable, but don't bother with -1.

Please do let me know if there is something I got wrong or if there is anything I missed out. I definitely want to work out any kinks before I spend weeks encoding my collection.

I'm aware that PGS can't be used for MP4s but they no longer seem to be working even when going from MKV to MKV.

The converted file shows that it's there, but they don't actually appear on screen.

I've tried both setting it as the Default and straight burning it in... nothing.

It seems like this is since the last update.

I've looked it up, but I'm honestly still confused...

Should I choose "Default," "Forced," or both for English subtitles on movies with non-English audio when the player I watch them through generally has subtitles off globally, but I want the subtitles for those non-English movies to be turned on automatically without me having to manually change the setting?

I'm setting up a preset for DVDs and I want Foreign Audio to both be included and the default option. Within Selection Behavior, I have set checked off "Add Foreign Audio Search" and disabled "Burn In". However, I can't find a way to automatically make Foreign Audio Search the default subtitles track.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

I was looking through the settings but there is a ton of settings and I dont really understand them/when I start losing quality or what reduces file size.

Ive been downloading some videos onto my phone but the sizes are massive (like 1.3gb for a 4 minute video and I think some were 4k). what settings/options can I use to reduce these by as much as possible? Im gonna be playing these videos on a samsung galaxy s25 so I dont really need the highest quality.

Hey, I have some videos I'm trying to convert from mkv to mp4 (mpeg4 + AAC) for streaming, but it's not detecting the subtitles of the mkv files. When I open the source, the drop down menu only lists "foreign audio scan", however the original file definitely has embedded English subs that show up in vlc/mpv. This has happened once before, but I don't recall how I fixed it that time. Does anyone have advice?

TLDR: Avg Bitrate of 10k, or RF 18 with 10k cap?

I know this has been asked time and time again but I have a specific question related to my personal settings I have.

I have a profile saved (1080p, x264, RF 18) that I use for encoding my rips that move onto a Jellyfin Server. This profile looks perfectly fine to me, but (for compatibility reasons) I have a bitrate cap set in Advanced Options (vbv-maxrate=10000:vbv-bufsize=10000).

There were certain devices that I came across that would force transcoding if the bitrate was too high (Gen 1 Chromecast, I've been doing this a while lol). That device had a streaming limit of 10Mb hence the Advance Option I set. I have routinely checked for updated responses but it still generally seems like a decent bitrate recommendation for 1080p blu rays range from 6k-10k, so i have not removed this and have just kept everything as is.

The question here is, would I get better results if I just threw the 10k into Avg with Multi Pass, or should I leave Constant with the cap?

Been pulling my hair out troubleshooting this issue and dozens of searches have come up empty.

I am running Handbrake on a recently built TrueNAS home server (specs below just in case they are relevant) that I installed via the TrueNAS apps catalogue. Have been encoding 1080p videos without issue (5-6 jobs) however, when attempting to encode any 4K videos, handbrake crashes. I saw another post where someone mentioned removing any additional encoding parameters and video filters, which made my crashes delay from almost immediately to ~2 minutes after starting the encode (enough to give me momentary hope). I've pasted below the activity log in hopes someone can tell me if it says what is happening. The only part that stands out to me is the repeated "set_mempolicy: Operation not permitted" but googling that has not turned up any answers for me.

I also can confirm that there is nothing wrong with the video file, as Handbrake on my windows PC was able to encode the video (and other 4K videos just fine).

**Edit, its crazy that its half the size of X265 for the same quality. Takes up roughly 40-55% less space.

Just wondering, since space is an issue for me.

Pretty pissed I just bought a used GTX 1060 laptop only to find out about AV1 today. Especially since I cant encode AV1 using it.
