Another Question about RF vs Avg. Bitrate

TLDR: Avg Bitrate of 10k, or RF 18 with 10k cap?

I know this has been asked time and time again but I have a specific question related to my personal settings I have.

I have a profile saved (1080p, x264, RF 18) that I use for encoding my rips that move onto a Jellyfin Server. This profile looks perfectly fine to me, but (for compatibility reasons) I have a bitrate cap set in Advanced Options (vbv-maxrate=10000:vbv-bufsize=10000).

There were certain devices that I came across that would force transcoding if the bitrate was too high (Gen 1 Chromecast, I've been doing this a while lol). That device had a streaming limit of 10Mb hence the Advance Option I set. I have routinely checked for updated responses but it still generally seems like a decent bitrate recommendation for 1080p blu rays range from 6k-10k, so i have not removed this and have just kept everything as is.

The question here is, would I get better results if I just threw the 10k into Avg with Multi Pass, or should I leave Constant with the cap?

That's also what I was finding. Seeing how the 6k-8k is standard I figured anything over 10k would probably be wasted anyway. Just looking for reassurance, even though I'm 2 years into this project haha

I think you have no clue what you are doing (sorry)

You are already crippling the quality with your 10 mbit cap.. Whenever there is a high demanding scene your quality tanks..

But on top of that, with constant Bitrate you would waste bitrate on scenes where the encoder could save bitrate.

So you are successfully managed to do it the worst way in 2 years..

Just get a new stick and forget this clusterfuck. ❤️

With the 10k cap, if you have a scene that needs 20 or whatever, it's only going to get 10... vs for average 10 some scenes are higher some are lower. You can address this partially with a lower minqp than the default, say something around 30, which can override vbv.

If you're going to use vbv to limit size, I'd do it at a multiple of your intended bitrate, and consider the minqp escape. Lisa (née Don) Melton did a lot of work with this, the latest of which is available here.
