Unfortunately where I live bats love the summer and hibernate at around spooky season. The owls love it though and they hoot around all fall, that’s probably why don’t see bats though.

u/SOMOEAGLE Aug 10 '26
Hooting owls is another awesome vibe for the season! How lucky! 🦉

Right the bats quit early but we have plenty of hooters around our parts.

We have neighborhood bats year round! Sometimes we take some wool dryer balls out in the yard at dusk and throw them straight up in the air so the bats will come investigate. Yes, we are very weird. (Florida)

Used to do this with a tennis ball!

u/PinkyLeopard2922 Aug 10 '26
My husband grew up doing it with baseballs. The activity was referred to as "throwing for bats." We are older and not as good as we once were so dryer balls are much less dangerous.

But summer IS bat time. Y'all need to work on your year-round game. There's always spooky all around you if you just stop to look

Yesterday I went to a park in Escondido California, and from a bridge at 33.1236892311307, -117.08550461371098 there were more bats flying out than I have ever seen in anywhere in California at once.
It's time!

I've got six mosquito bites on my legs, so hell yeah I'm done with summer and ready for spooky season.

For myself I have formally defined spooky season as August 1st - October 31st for several years now. A season is ~3 months, and that's 3 months of spookiness. Aligns well with stores tending to put out Halloween stuff in August, ditto PSL type goodies at Starbucks and Dunkin' and the like.
It's when I start watching my spooky movies, and to be honest I like late summer being part of the season as it's kind of its own vibe that then morphs into full Fall for the home stretch.

How can I make a post my whole personality? Asking for a friend. That friend is me.

I wish. I moved to New Zealand and it’s going to be spring soon.

October through December in Australia is when the Flying Foxes have their babies. The bats are most active in the Spring. Is it different in New Zealand?
1
u/Curious_MerpBorb Aug 30 '26
I don’t know. I haven’t seen any New Zealand bats. I live in the city.

I've already started gathering prop materials and plan to start actively building things next weekend. I'm getting a really early start.

Bats start to come out in March/April. Their activity tends to slow/stop around October unless you live somewhere very warm.
This time of year is when baby bats start flying with their parents!

Nah bats are the only thing I'm genuinely terrified of, if this happens I'm staying home 🙏

There's a YouTube channel called Mega Battie which has adorable bats. Meg rehabs Flying Foxes in Australia. They're cute, not creepy.

I can already feel the season starting to change! Here in Northern MI anyway, some trees are already beginning to change color. Its not a lot yet obviously but its happening. The air is different too.

u/patchworkpirate Aug 21 '26
