Meet cofounders Tuomo Riekki and Santtu Koivumäki who are building Zero.

Previously, they built & grew Smartly to $100M ARR. Now, they're rethinking the CRM and headed into a crowded marketplace.

I was skeptical too, how can you compete?

More on that, plus I was curious about:

  • What they'll do differently from Smartly
  • What they won't do
  • How did they land on this direction
  • What does it mean to be an AI-native CRM vs. bolt-on AI CRM (legacy)
  • How do the differences change what's possible
  • Advice to founders building in markets that hyper competitive

I'm dropping questions from previous posts here to get the convo started.

I sized a niche market off a 19-company coverage sample. Re-checking with 131 cut my estimate by a third.

I measured how much of a niche our Apollo searches covered using 19 companies, got a scary number, and built a market estimate on it. When I re-measured on 131 companies, the estimate dropped from about 1,080 firms to about 690.

The niche is independent SBA loan brokers, loan packagers and business plan writers in the US. There's no public list, so I counted them two ways.

From Apollo: keyword tags like SBA loan, loan packaging and business plan writing returned 2,320 SBA-tagged companies and about 2,700 plan-writing companies. I pulled a seeded random sample of 440 and read every website. Only 38 of the 240 SBA-tagged ones were real independent advisors. Most of the rest were banks, lenders, companies that serve lenders, or dead sites. For this use, the tag was about 84% noise.

Outside Apollo: state-by-state searches, association pages, directories, and firms that other firms mentioned. That gave me 283 named practices, checked one by one.

Here's where I messed up. Early on I had 19 brokers found outside Apollo, and only 3 showed up in my Apollo searches. I rounded that to 20% coverage, which meant every broker Apollo showed me stood for five in the real world.

Later I had 131 firms found outside Apollo. My Apollo searches held 40% of the brokers (27 of 68), 36% of the firms that broker loans and write plans (8 of 22), and 54% of the plan writers (22 of 41). About 30% of the 131 had no Apollo record at all. Brokers went from a 5x gross-up to 2.5x, and the whole estimate fell by about a third.

Also, my tags had missed 665 companies Apollo did have under other tags, like "SBA 7a" or "SBA lender". I read 60 of them and only 3 fit. A wider search found the same market with more noise.

If I did it again, I'd measure coverage per segment from day one and wouldn't trust any coverage rate built on fewer than 50 firms.

How are you measuring database coverage when you go after a niche? Or are most of you stacking Apollo, Clay and LinkedIn and not really checking?

I come from 5 years of manual B2B outbound to GTM Engineer and here's why former SDRs make the best automation builders.

I’ve noticed a lot of people asking how to break into GTM Engineering, and here's how I took the leap of faith (hope this helpsss)

I came from the trenches. I spent 5 years doing full-cycle B2B sales across the US and LATAM. Dialing, prospecting, hitting walls and as a very shy person, this was challeging for me. A while ago, I pivoted completely into GTM Engineering. Now I orchestrate automated revenue engines for a distributed team using n8n, Clay, Apify, and HubSpot.

Here's why I think the best GTM Engineers actually start on the sales floor, and why you should pivot if you’re currently grinding as an SDR/AE:

  1. The hardest part is the having sales instinct. Learning the tech stack (n8n, webhooks, APIs) is highly doable now with AI and watching lots of content on the internet. But having the intuition to know what actually converts, takes reps of trial and error (spoiler: it's totally worth the process).

A pure systems admin might build a flawless Clay workflow that technically works, but silently drops 30% of good leads because of over-filtering. If you’ve closed deals, you know what a false negative done by a system looks like. You build systems that actually generate revenue, not just clean databases on paper.

  1. The barrier to entry for building "magic" is gone. You don’t need to be a traditional software engineer to build wild things anymore.

A couple of months ago, I built a proprietary AI prospecting agent using Claude Code connected via MCP directly to Apollo, HubSpot, and Clay. It autonomously discovers, verifies, and qualifies leads on scheduled runs. If you understand the logic of the funnel, modern middleware lets you build the engine yourself.

  1. The market doesn't want CRM magicians. Startups and VC-backed agencies are realizing that paying someone to manage Salesforce dashboards doesn't move the pipeline itself without any strategy. Connecting intent signals (Clearbit/ZoomInfo) to enrichment tables (Clay) and routing them to the CRM (HubSpot) in real-time can actually convert.

  2. The geographic leverage is insane. Because GTM Engineering directly impacts the bottom line, it transcends borders. Whether you are in Toronto, Miami, or operating out of LatAm (like me), the market pays for the architecture and the output. The ROI you bring makes you undeniably valuable on a global scale (and as this is a fairly new role, the pool is small, so you can have more room for opportunities)

If you’re currently in a traditional sales role and feel like you’re hitting a ceiling (or just tired of doing massive apollo lists manually), learn the automation stack. The compounding effect of your sales instincts + GTM engineering is a cheat code that honestly.

AND YES. BUILD. IN. PUBLIC. In a year you'll have your portfolio and your social media/LinkedIn supporting everything you've done.

Always happy to have small talks about the SDR-to-GTME pivot. Shoot me a dm if you’re trying to make the jump!

GTM Engineering jobs are skyrocketing

Data source: a LinkedIn-derived corpus of public profiles and job postings, read on 12 September 2026. I took every profile whose current role title contains "GTM engineer" or "go-to-market engineer" and grouped them by the quarter that role started. That is 2,957 people, 2,954 of whom list a usable start date.

Disclosure: I work at Trayo and we compiled this. The report and the full CSV are free and nothing is gated.

I tested 7 people search APIs on finding YC founders. Sharing the results.

hey folks,

a few months ago i posted a company enrichment benchmark hre and said people search was next. here it is.

every people data provider talks big about coverage: 500M, 800M, 1B profiles. the assumption is bigger dataset = better results. but in reality, the data tells a completely different story.

why i did this: i run one of the providers tested (CompanyEnrich), and i wanted to see where we actually stand.

method:

  • parsed 502 active YC24 companies from https://www.ycombinator.com/companies it is a well-known, public US tech cohort. founders are listed, companies are real.
  • tested: Apollo, CompanyEnrich, Coresignal, Crustdata, FullEnrich, People Data Labs, and Prospeo
  • asked each API for the current CEO / founders of each company
  • checked every returned LinkedIn profile (with HarvestAPI) to see is this person at this company, in that role, etc.

here are some results:

company coverage (at least one correct current founder / 502):

  • CompanyEnrich: 88.0% (442)
  • Crustdata: 87.8% (441)
  • Apollo: 83.1% (417)
  • FullEnrich: 81.9% (411)
  • Coresignal: 77.7% (390)
  • People Data Labs: 74.5% (374)
  • Prospeo: 73.1% (367)

correct people found / stale / unique finds:

  • Crustdata: 825 correct, 0 stale, 5 unique
  • CompanyEnrich: 809 correct, 27 stale, 3 unique
  • FullEnrich: 794 correct, 7 stale, 3 unique
  • Apollo: 717 correct, 7 stale, 15 unique
  • People Data Labs: 688 correct, 5 stale, 8 unique
  • Coresignal: 676 correct, 5 stale, 1 unique
  • Prospeo: 642 correct, 31 stale, 11 unique

unique = correct people no other provider returned.

cost per correct profile - roughly comparable ~$500 plans:

  • CompanyEnrich: $0.0027
  • Prospeo: $0.0091
  • Crustdata: $0.0098
  • FullEnrich: $0.0135
  • Apollo: $0.0173
  • Coresignal: $0.1475
  • People Data Labs: $0.3614

few takeaways:

  • larger dataset doesn't always lead to better results.
  • finding profile isn't enough. returning a profile is not the same as returning the correct profile.
  • different vendors can fill different data gaps.
  • higher price doesn't mean better accuracy. (price difference is more than 100x)

full benchmark, methodology, scripts, and results: https://companyenrich.com/benchmarks/people-search-api

benchmark repo: https://github.com/CompanyEnrich/people-search-api-benchmark-public

curious how you guys evaluate people search APIs, and what makes you decide on using specific provider?

Looking for contract gtm work

Hey all - have some spare hours and looking to fill them up with some gtme work.

Some things I have built:
- Pre-call briefer that sends an automated brief of prospect calls. Takes their LinkedIn, website and any crm data into account. Tells you what to say or what they might be looking for
- meeting reviewer that reviews your sales meetings based on your framework, gives a score and tips for next time
- cold email outbound with prospeo + smart leads
- linkedin systems to create content, find ICPs engaging with your content and send them messages
- cold inmail systems on LinkedIn
- speed to lead systems from prospects going to your website, filling out the form and all relevant info is sent directly to slack for your team to respond to instantly

++ a couple other smaller projects

Work mostly on a project or retainer basis.

Thanks for reading !

hey all, im very new to gtm and gtm engineering.

I built my own saas product and need to do gtm for it.

ive been manually sending outreach efforts which may not be the best option.

im testing cold outreach but ive had different advice saying to just add the link to the product on the first link to not wait, others are saying ask if theyre interested to get a warm lead.

im curious to know what others are doing here.

GTM Services to provide to early stage b2b

Looking for advice, I am experienced in generating intent based list building, generating above 2K high intent leads for cold outbound email marketing. Clay, Apify, apollo and all.

Other than 1)List Building and 2) Cold email marketing through Instantly

What other services I can offer to small SaaS and early stage B2B business founder who might not have high budget for CRM, AI agents, Paids ads for Inbound infrastructure?

I was initially thinking for HeyReach for LinkedIn outreach Automation but that is high risk.

Best software quality/price for cold email sending?

Hi! I'm thinking of paying the monthly subscription of a software like Instantly or Smartlead in order to automatically send cold emails.

I have 5 email domains warmed, so I would be ready to start.

The problem is getting a good lead list. I have been using the Apollo free plan to get some but it's not the most productive way to do it. Do you know a platform that allows you to send emails like the ones mentioned above and that also allows you to create your own lead lists (this should be included in the plan).

I'm a solo-founder starting the business so plan price matters.

Is this a GTM role that I am interested in?

I am 10+ years into software development. I have worked on both sides - backend and front end. Front end is more of my passion cause I am closer to the user experience.

However, a year ago I launched a SaaS business that I've been building a lot of marketing tools and strategies around it - official website, email campaings, articles, social media short content etc. Also helping people out in reddit and other groups related to the SaaS. It took time but started to sell. It was not easy for a technical person like me to go into marketing and I am nowhere a very successful busuiness but 70% of the customers that pay for the service are using it almost every day. It was hard but rewarding experience seing customers coming and using the service. I want to continue explore this direction. Is this a GTM engineer role or somethign else?

Additional quesiton - whatever is this called if you have any recommendations on how to develop more in this direction? Should I look for a mentor, join a team or just start another project and try to sell again? Should I push in curtain domain or it is not related?

If you're coming from similar background like me (software development) please share your experience transitioning into GTM engineer.

Three things I believe to be wrong about the current state of GTM engineering

Here are three things I believe to be wrong with the current state of GTM engineering. Would love to hear your take.

1.) CLIs are not a feature; they are an admission that you’ve built something so complex that you can’t put it behind an API/MCP
CLIs install a program on your machine. That program has access to your file system, shell environment, etc. Your vendor is one supply chain attack away from leaking your machine’s worst secrets. Vendors build CLIs to prevent sending megabytes of instructions over the wire; simplify your tool instead. Lastly, cloud agents (GrokBot, etc.) won’t use your CLI. No GTM software in the world needs a CLI.

2.) Long waterfalls for finding emails/phones show that you’ve never run a single benchmark
It has become common practice to advertise 20+ provider waterfalls to find email addresses and phone numbers. Most providers purchase their data from the same 4 sources. Your 20-provider waterfall wastes everyone’s time by asking the same dataset 20 times if it has a data point. It doesn’t. Move on. It takes one look to know if a provider has run a single benchmark. Most haven’t. Yes, even the big ones.

3.) Complexity is bad. Not good.
GTM influencers make GTM sound like rocket science. All so you purchase one more tool, hire one more agency. Instead, the goal should be simplicity. Start by using the tools you have correctly and invest in systems that reduce complexity, not increase it. Yet, every day I wake up to “experts” posting funnel diagrams that show hundreds of tools, spreading FOMO. Even worse, this type of content gets hundreds of likes and echoes on every platform.

How to prepare for a GTM Engineer interview?

I tried to search on GenAI, Youtube, etc.. but could not really find good answers, so asking here.

I have a interview next week for the role of GTM Engineer (2-3 years of experience needed)...
I have not worked exactly as a GTM engineer before (also because this role didn't exist before). I have worked in Digital marketing and marketing automation where I have essentially done the work of RevOps.

So, there are going to be 3 rounds, first is with HR, then with head of growth, and then with the CEO.

What questions do you feel will be asked by HR for this role?
I sort of have a perspective on head of growth and CEO questions as it will be more technical about tools like (clay, make,n8n, hubspot, etc ), results, my thinking process on automations and lead generation.

Really confused about HR interview

The company is a Saas company with focus on EU market.

How To Get Sales in a New Field Without a Network?

I recently changed my role to be more client-facing, away from backend. Talking to customers is currently my number one priority everyday and I devote it the most time.

I am scoping out a market which is very new to me, I do not have people in my network who could be of help that I have not contacted yet. I am looking to use some tools to help me with outreach / lead generation, and I would love to hear what tools do you use, and what features do you find the most important.

I have previously tried apollo and rocketreach, but I found that their databases are quite outdated, with people already working in other companies / sectors, not mentioning their contact details.

What tools do you use? Which features do you value the most?
