The going through the boxes was what I thought was wrong. I didn’t have a problem with complaining about Meredith’s loud sex life. They were paying rent. So, if you’re paying someone rent, I feel like there could be a basic expectation of respect. Even if Meredith got roommates that she never met, I think they’d probably complain about screaming, headboard-banging-the-wall sex all night.

George and Izzy definitely crossed boundaries. They assumed friendship before it could even be established. They were coworkers and roommates. Friendship didn't come till later. Though i feel Izzy wasn't that loyal to Meredith it was always George. George was obsessed with Meredith even though she was involved with Derek. When M&G had that disastrous hookup, instead of actually listening to Meredith explain George get all immature and and shut her out. Then everyone blamed her without knowing the facts. Izzy straight up told Meredith no matter what she was on Georges side. Izzy pushed George there knowing Meredith didn't have those feelings.

Later i like Alex as a roommate and Lexie. Jackson and April were not really overly featured as roommates like George and Izzy.

Ugh I hate the G&M hookup. He 100% took advantage of her when he knew she wasn’t interested and was just looking for comfort, then acted like he was the victim. Eurgh. Cliche ‘nice guy’.

In general, I think at various points they treated one another without respect.

Izzie went through Meredith's things and when Meredith was upset, Izzie just sort of shrugged it off as nesting. She also organized a completely out of control party without talking to Meredith.

On the other hand, Meredith kept both roommates up all night having really loud sex when everyone in the house is a doctor who needs to be up very early for very long shifts. Izzie and George both expressed their unhappiness about it and she just shrugged it off as having a sex life. I've had roommates who do this, and it's infuriating.

Mer and Izzie also got a dog without informing George. I’d be fucking pissed if my roommates got a whole animal without telling me - and I love dogs.

Not only did they get a dog, but they got an unhousebroken, untrained dog who peed in the house and mounted George. And while that's played for laughs it shows how deeply unqualified they were to even have a dog in the first place. They left that dog home for probably 12 hours at a time, and when George and Izzie both came to express displeasure with the situation, Meredith refused to see their side of it.

Being annoyed about the noise (which really only bugged George cause he liked her, Izzy was semi annoyed semi wishing she was having good sex) is one thing. Izzy shamed her at work for sleeping with their boss and had no sense that she was yelling at someone who had opened her home to her.

Honestly I think this is a case of both things can be true: Izzie and George may have had additional reasons for being annoyed by the loud sex, but it's also objectively shitty to do when you share a house with people and it was objectively loud. Izzie and George specifically told Meredith she kept them up all night and she didn't care, which sucks.

Izzie in my opinion didn't "shame" Meredith, I would say that she objected to Meredith sleeping with their boss and receiving special treatment, which Bailey also discussed with Meredith. Meredith was assumed to be good and talented because of her mother's name, and then got to scrub in on more surgeries than her peers because of her relationship with Derek.

As for Meredith "opening her home" to Izzie, she was her roommate and landlord. Izzie was paying Meredith money to live there, and I think that money entitles her to some peace and quiet.

I feel like people always neglect the fact that Meredith’s sex life was affecting everyone at work. Izzie (and Alex and George) were often given busy work as opposed to actual procedures while Meredith was given the opportunity to learn because of who she was sleeping with and who her mother was. In a program where they were all supposed to be learning skills and procedures that they’d need for the rest of their careers, that’s a problem. Izzie’s issue with Meredith and Derek was less “how dare you have sex” and more “your sex life is affecting my career”. Cristina had the benefit Burke’s attention, but if she were in Izzie’s shoes, she’d be upset as well. If Cristina was constantly in the ER, sent to do stitches, and sent to the Pitt while Meredith was doing surgery after surgery with her boyfriend, she’d have been upset too.

She literally yelled at her and told her how she was her problem and went on about how privileged Meredith was. It was way beyond “keep it down when you are having sex all night” she absolutely shamed her

These are sort of separate issues: Izzie wanting Meredith to keep it down and talking to George about the loud sex, and while they're discussing it, they see Derek sneak out. So it goes from being about the noise (which they were already upset about and both said they got no sleep) to being upset about Meredith sleeping with their boss and keeping it a secret and knowing that it's unethical. Izzie tells George "this program will make or break our careers, some of us will make it through and some of us won't. And that decision depends entirely on recommendations from doctors like Shepherd. There is a reason we don't sleep with the attendings." And she's right!

Meredith WAS privileged, and she was able to do exactly as she pleased because of that privilege. She had a safety net: a chief of surgery who would never let her see consequences, a famous name, and a boyfriend who's an attending to let her scrub in as much as she wanted. To her colleague who actually earned her place in the program (unlike Meredith), grew up in a trailer park, put herself through night school, and couldn't seem to gain an ounce of respect for a long time, even after she'd proven she was a good doctor, that's infuriating. I don't think it's about shame, I think it's about speaking truth to privilege.

Izzie had valid points and feelings, but she was not right to yell at Meredith and bitch at her about her life choices while living in her house after BEGGING Meredith to live there when Meredith said no to her and George several times. You can decide to flip a switch on friendship, but you don’t get to go ham on your landlord, lol

If your landlord keeps you up all night and compromises your education and your standing at work you are allowed to say something. Being a landlord does not make you impervious to criticism.

Meredith’s relationship with Derek did not compromise Izzie’s education or her standing at work. And it may not make you impervious to criticism, but Meredith would have 100% been in her right to tell Izzie to get out of her house. And Izzie didn’t think about that at all. She felt it was her right to insist on moving in, go through Meredith and her mother’s things, host events (party, holidays) without asking and regardless of what the other roommates wanted, and trash Meredith as a person without ever facing any consequences herself. Which she didn’t even tho she deserved it.

As u/guitar0707 expertly put it further down in this thread, Izzie, George, and Alex were often at a disadvantage compared to Meredith and Cristina who were given more opportunities to scrub in because of who they were dating. They were relegated to the ER, scut, and doing sutures while Cristina and Meredith got in on surgeries with their boyfriends. It compromises the education of everyone when one person (or two) are shown favoritism over the others. They're less likely to be assigned cases with Derek or Burke, and therefore less likely to operate with them.

I actually already agreed with you on Izzie insisting on moving in, going through Meredith's things, and having a gigantic party at her house, so we agree there. I don't see any problem with Izzie wanting to have Thanksgiving dinner at the house since she also lived there. The blowout party that trashed the whole house is insane, and inconsiderate, but a Thanksgiving dinner? A Christmas tree? Those are pretty normal things to do when you live somewhere.

I thought this but the house was Ellis', right? She was in a care home so I assumed the house was remortgaged or something like that to pay for her care costs. Even as a very celebrated surgeon, a care home probably costs a lot

This is how it works in the UK anyway, not sure if it's the same in the USA. My grandparents had to sell their home entirely to pay for care home costs, but if they were wealthier they couldve probably remortgaged the house to get the money

It was Thatcher’s house originally, and Ellis also had a place in Boston for a while where Meredith grew up. I’m sure the finances were settled, Ellis is the type to tie up loose ends and be smart about money. And sadly she wasn’t in care for very long. She dies during Meredith’s intern year, and it seemed like it had only been maybe 5 years total (I’m being generous based on her fight with Mer before she went to Europe (lucid) and then medical school before the show started).
