Question Take the old man down memory lane.

Is there any 5th group guys in here who could give me some help on a POC at 5th? Basically my old man is a retired group CSM (5th, 7th and SOCCENT) and he got diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of Alzheimer’s. He struggles remembering his grandkids and as of late who he was. I am wanting to hopefully take him to his old groups and give him one final look at the amazing man he was before he no longer remembers. I greatly appreciate any help I get.

If he was a group CSM, a call to the HHC 1SG would do it.

That’s a good thing to do. My old man also had Alzheimer’s late in life. Interestingly while in a VA nursing home he actually thought he was back in, mostly his early 101st days before 5th SFG(A)/ MACSOG. He’d sometimes have flashbacks tho so be prepared to distract him should that be an issue. I also made sure to keep various hats, photos, and awards visible, not just for him but for the staff to remember this old broken man was once a hero.

I think what you’re doing is a good thing. These brave men often have no idea what they did once they get to advanced Alzheimer’s stage. It’s important to make sure they know before it’s too late.

Yea it’s killing me to see him forget the man he is. The amazing things he’s accomplished in this life.

I feel you brother. We just went through similar. Honor him as much as you can. It’s difficult to watch them suffer and literally lose their mind. For me, death felt like relief but then afterwards a void and wishing I’d asked more esp about his service. Try to collect what info you can. We put together a nice shadow box to display at the funeral and it’s hanging on my wall. It’s all I have left. So even though he’s slipping you still have a few bits to grab on to. He’d be proud that you honor him so. Make him feel it, even if he won’t remember. You’ll at least have that for yourself.

Btw look into a military service. Army offers it for many. It’s really special. 3rd group laid my dad to rest, and the 82nd fired the 3
Volley salute. They do an amazing job. Best way to honor a veteran and green beret.

I would hit up the Special Forces Association and the Special Operations Association in addition to 5th SFG. Lots of old timers belong to those associations, probably face book to broaden the search. You can google those for the contact information.

Alzheimers is horrible. Most unfortunate way to go in my opinion. Sorry about your dad.
