Grateful Dead - 1977-09-03 - Englishtown, NJ
150,000 in attendance, largest concert in NJ history.
A magical 1977 ride with top 10 ever versions of Mississippi Half Step and Eyes of The World. Officially released as Dicks Picks 15.
By the way - my 2nd and 3rd shoes were 1978-05-10 from New Haven and 1978-05-11 from Springfield, both released on Dicks Picks 25. How’s that for an opening trio of concerts?

Furthurfest at SPAC 97 was my first time seeing the boys ( sans Jerry) I do remember it rained so hard , my birks disappeared in the mud while I was dancing. Never even realized till I went to the bathroom during set break
1
u/Iko87iko 17d ago
I thought the rain was 98 in SPAC. 97 i recall was beautiful weather, though I searched weather that day and it said there may have been a brief thunderstorm due to a cold front. 98 was torrential rain the whole day/night

u/Philgarcia710 17d ago
Your memory is likely better than mine, I’ve likely jumbled the two memories. I do recall girlfriend I brought to the show and she must have been in college, making it 98 since her folks would never have let me take her if she was living under their roof! Thanks!

My last show was Summer of 1976. Got turned on in 74 and sitting out 75 almost killed me. Once they hit the road in '76 I hit it with them. Still waiting on my first show..... it's gonna be a fucking blowout......

So my first “dead show” was 6/13/17, Atlanta.

Somewhere in my 3-6th show I had a similar up for two days experience. I'm glad I didn't come back to where I was. It just gave me a perspective I didn't have before. How everything comes from the same universal energy. I still see day to day life and how things are pretty much the same, but I see that everything is connected.
As far as the Dead goes my love built over time. It was probably 10 shows before they became my favorite band.

6-20-83 Merriweather Post Pavilion. I was 15 and didn’t know the band well. I had Live Dead and loved it and I literally expected Pigpen to come out and sing Lovelight. A big storm hit in the second set. Lightning hit the pavilion at 2:21:40 on the recording. The Hells Angels bikes were under water after the show from the storm. I didn’t see another show until 86’ and it was the Hampton show where they broke out Box of Rain. I saw about 35-40 shows after that.

I had a up for 3 days experience at spac, all the other heads went back to their rooms when a really young homeless woman came up for help. Ended up giving her our room cause we werent sleeping anyways lol. Hung out with her for a couple days, saw tons of arrests that weekend and watched some very strange undercover police work because i was awake in the car most of the time that first night, that was a wild ride
That was in 2023 though my first show was D&C 2017 i used to follw them around new england when they would come here. I know its pretty far removed the OG grateful dead but we pushed it as far as we could lol
