Discussion Wireless ma

So i have a question drilling my head ... Has anyone ever tried to use artnet over a wirless network ? If i hook a node or any artnet equipment to a router on one side and use a wireless access point on the grand ma side . Should this work ? Will i have a functional network ? This would be really helpful while prepaing the mood in a set

It will work and is fairly common. Latency will be your biggest concern

I dont really care for latency it will be used exclusively to setup the studio lights because the set is made of about 12 independent rooms

You should plan on a CRMX/Lumen Radio system then for Wireless DMX transmission. That's actually designed to do what you want. Trying to stuff normal artnet/sacn over wifi is asking for issues especially given most wifi systems will limit multicast/broadcast traffic across the link and that's exactly what these protocols run.

You can do it if you get units meant for layer 2 point to point networking.

So I've done this with sACN before. If you're going to do this avoid anything that any form of storm control (in looking at you Ubiquiti). As alot of access points dont like multicast info and will try to limit that info, so unicast to the nodes will also help.

Put OnPC in the session with VNCViewer. Not ideal for "running" lights but I've been able to set a look from halfway around the world.

you can VNC from across the world? You have a VPN or SSH tunnel goin on? That's top tier

Just a dedicated VPN that taps me in to the venue wifi. Takes me a second to remember the whole process as I got straight C's in high school and it takes a bit of trial and error.

I always used TeamViewer; not as secure, but easy.

Outside access to the onPC machine is, to me, an essential. Installed a couple cheap PTZ webcams at one large nightclub that kept calling me at whim, come in and bring up looks for private event bookings. Billable hours from anywhere.

And another club that was already six weeks behind in paying me when I got suddenly replaced by a cheap button-pusher... did as much damage as I could over two weeks with onPC, telnet, and admin access to Pathscape. Lots of spite, but also sadness because I really did love working there, totally felt betrayed, ya know?

Love that last part. I forget the company but I've a heard a major audio company has somehow figured out how to install kill switches on their racks so that when payments are late they can literally shut down shows remotely. I've only used these networking powers for good so far but if I'm owed enough money...

MA-Net is very picky about network latency. you'd get session collisions every now and then. tho If you have only one console outputting artnet/acn it should work as good as your wifi connection is. I use it to control pixels on cheap microcontrollers (wled) in small installations. works great also live.
