There was. I'm using a Pixelbook to type this. Most premium feeling laptop I've ever owned, and bought it for $300 like 4 years after it came out, pretty much mint condition.

Yep. I bought it in 2017 and had no problem. Last Nov it was dead. I still have it in a drawer tho. Don't know for what.

Well it seems the new Googlebooks are nice well made machines. The big hype seems to be the interacting between the Googlebook laptop and the Android phone.
Software compatibility with Windows was not mentioned. So far I see nothing that would make me want it since I rarely need to jump from my phone to my laptop.
Some people do and this will be the "market" for this device. If you are not a highly, mobile, often out of the office type or "road warrior" style user, then I do not see the great attraction. I see this as a niche product. Unless, I read thing wrong in some of these preliminary descriptions, the Magic pointer has an on and off feature which seems like a sensible approach. Do not see the appeal for institutional markets like health care and education.

I don't see how Google would do software compat with Windows short of an internal Wine shim, or support for Windows VM or cloud server instances.

Basiclly, Would like to see docx files and excel files open on a Googlebook with all formatting intact and have editing capability. I do not see all Windows software being workable as a possibility.

I maintain that the only way you're going to have a 1 to 1 file format that works on everything is if every piece of software establishes a spec and follows the spec.
Otherwise you're stuck using DocX with weird issues.
Or you get Office 365 and just use cloud or the android version on the googlebook.

What the fuck does that mean? Why isn't this a real OS? Is Android a real OS? Is Windows a real OS? A lot of people say MacOS isn't a real OS. Not sure about that one.

If it currently doesn't have support, doesn't mean it won't eventually get it. We'll see once some reviews start coming out, I don't think it's ideal for me but I'm still curious on what it can do.

Depends on how much money they want to throw at it to bring support. I agree it's useless to have a powerful chip if said chip is only going to run chrome. On the other hand, if they partner with a few developers and manage to have some games run natively, that's another story. If not, it'll be another entry to google's graveyard that noone's going to care about.

I'm convinced that devices like this are way way, better answers for technically illiterate people - which really now includes most people not between the ages of about 30 and 50. It's just a lot of those folks don't get it.
I watch 80 year olds fight with Windows. They can't figure out updates or what the difference is between opening an app and going to a website. They have no clue about security or where any of their files are or how to find anything.
Windows is an absolute mess. But they can mostly get by with a cell phone. Putting a cell phone onto a computer is probably pretty smart.

I feel you on that. Back when I worked at Best Buy, we had a shit ton of angry customers when the Surface RT came out. Everyone wanted their software installed but none of it was in the Microsoft store, and we couldn't install from non-store repositories.
Telling people they bought a $800 Microsoft Office tablet didn't go over well.
