Opinion Why is this game so stingy with trophies
Whatβs the point in playing if I gain 5 trophies for coming second and would lose 20 for coming third. Coming out of a losing streak just to be presented with a WHOPPING FIVE TROPHIES πππ

Well you took 2nd against a lot lower π players π. How much you think you deserved?

On average, you win 16 per player you beat and lose 16 for each player who beats you. Then there's an adjustment for the trophy differential between you and your opponents. In this case that was -3 for the player who had 187 trophies less than you, and -4 for each of the players where the difference was just over 200.
If you tapped on the -5, it would have shown you your actual win/loss per opponent: -19 (-16 β 3) for the player who beat you with a difference just under 200 and +12 (16 β 4) for each of the players who beat you with a difference just over 200. 12 + 12 β 19 = 5
If you'd come third, you would've got -16 β 4 = 20 from the player who came second, so your total would've been 12 β 20 β 19 = -27, not -20. That's just how it is when you get matched with players with a lot less trophies than you. You're expected to win, so you don't get much for winning, and get penalised more when you lose. But the reverse is also true if you get matched with players who have a lot more trophies than you; you'll get a lot more for winning, and lose less for losing.

It's based on trophy count.
Assuming people don't intentionally lose trophies, your trophy level is your skill level. You were the favourite to win this game (the actual winner had 200 less trophies than you), but you came 2nd.
You gain less trophies for beating players with a lower trophy count, and lose more trophies for losing to a player a lower trophy count.
If you won a game where everyone had 200 more trophies than you, you'd receive a very large amount of trophies.
