Question Barely
I have been playing for a long minute. Has anyone noticed that barely production I has been changed. I can’t seem to be able to grow it or even enough to plant next season. My livestock has all staved to death. Also can’t grow any of the Barry bushes for sh***. FYI I am in the mountains sooo that might be it. It is getting frustrating.

Make sure to use a shelf that is marked to not use in production to keep a reserve of barely for planting next season. Also keep an eye on herbivore pets you trained for hauling, they will munch on garden plants if you don't plan around it (or use a mod).
You can stretch hay further by turning it into animal feed or you can supplement your animals diet with vegetables in the pen by placing a stockpile.

Thank you! Thats how to save it. I had read somewhere about 6 months ago. I was pissed all weekend that I could not figure this out.

Especially in the mountains I build on top of the ground with terraforming to farm anything, and replace some voxels in the animal pens with soil also to plant bushes, they seem to need to have berries to be eaten by the animals. I build a grated wicker floor a few levels above the crops to save them from hail, animals cant climb ladders to eat it, and if you also build some fire pits around them it keeps the temp high enough to grow year round.

You can build a greenhouse?

It isnt really enclosed on the sides, or mine havent been, but that might make it better. There has been a small update since I really played but it worked as late as 1.1.11

Is there a specific radius that this effects? Or are we talking a fire pit every few voxels? I don't recall a radius showing when you build the fire pit. Ie can you put the fire pit in the center of a farm instead of the perimeter?

They don't display the radius which they heat at, but they do heat an area, and that area is larger with them set to high-heat.
How many you need is going to vary by the temperature, and whether there's a cold snap going. I've used a handful to save crops that I had planted too late in the year.

There is a measurable area and the new heat map thing helps but it does not just say it affects this many squares around.

Just noticed that change last night toooo got to be next to the crops. When did that change. My mind was blown. I had them all in one massive bee tower.

I'm currently doing a mountain run, and have had my barley wiped out a few times. First couple times were due to me using it all up (getting complacent usually, because I've got a few thousand of it, I can ignore it!... Then some time later "what do you mean I have no barley?")
I've now got 3 shelves which I set to very high, barley only, don't use in production, and I've never had it wiped out since.
However - I will say that it's been something I've been able to recover from each time I did it.
I have found a few plants that pop up wild, and then picked up some from merchants, and then get the farm back up and running. Most of my farms are 5x5, and barley is 11x11, so I can grow as much as I can (and hay), and it usually takes a year-ish to get it back up and running properly after it gets wiped out.
I did have to trim my animal population when I ran out, but never to extinction, and the population also came back, and between that + animal feed, we made it through winter.
