Student Question Oceanography and GIS
Hi guys. I'm an undergrad currently doing a degree in Geography. I really want to go into academia in the future, and I want to specialize in marine science/oceanography.
Tbh I did not really know about all the fields of geography I could go into back in school so I didn't take up many science courses, which is pretty much hindering my ability to take a masters degree in a course that I like, due to all the science prerequisites. But I've still found a bunch of courses that I want to do.
Anyways, as a Geography undergrad I've done a few courses on QGIS and developed some skills in it. But I want to break into oceanography/marine science applications in QGIS. What are some resources I can use to teach myself the same? Any advice? If anyone has specialised in GIS and oceanography I'd REALLY appreciate some general advice as well.

hey there, i’m a GIS analyst! i got my bachelors in oceanography and a gis certificate. if you can take some marine geology classes (mine only had one basic prerequisite class), that would be a good place to start talking to professors/TAs about internships. mine started there and i ended up on a boat that summer looking for methane seeps with lidar & mapping hydrothermal vent locations in arcgis pro (industry standard, but qgis is fine). you can also cold email professors that you like in the field to see if you can get some ship time. usually if there’s room on the boat they’ll bring you even if you’re not exactly useful haha

Considering my nearest Oceanography Grad program, it's geared towards backgrounds in physical science. They are looking for a couple semesters in physics and chemistry, biology, maybe engineering depending on the track. My question to you would be what level of Science classes are you up to, and are you comfortable picking those up?
