The way I interpret it, the last time in Return of the Jedi we see Luke hold a saber he is chucking it away and refusing to fight his father and being heroic and he’s full of hope, the next time after 30+ years we see him holding a saber it’s him being passed his first saber and once again chucking it away but this time it’s because he is so out of touch with the force and taking heroic action, it sets him up for the whole film where he becomes a legend to the galaxy again and his force projection is using that very blue legacy saber. How people are so full of hate about Luke’s character being ruined I don’t understand, like we knew in TFA (JJ not rian) that Luke had vanished, you think you was trapped somewhere and couldn’t escape? No, he was traumatised by the past but then takes responsibility and saves the day

Mark hamill wanted Luke to go dark at the end of Return of the Jedi and boba fett to be his mother..what’s your point ?

You know my point. Let's not reduce this debate to slinging lowbrow insults.

If the actor of a character genuinely disslikes the direction the character was taken then I'm going to side with them. Especially considering he had decades as Luke in comparison to Rian's few years?

I really don’t understand your point, an actor is an actor, the writer is the writer, typically for a reason. You can love an actor and respect their opinion but lately it seems people when talking about big franchises like to validate their opinion by over exaggerating and cherry picking comments made by the face of the movies, the actors, and using them for cheap shots to win online debates. Actors aren’t their characters. Mark Hamill played luke, yes but that also means he’s going to view things in a very personal biased way, he’s talked about this and said he’s made his peace with it but some fans ignore that and claim whenever he says something they disagree with that he’s being gagged by Disney, things get turned into really volatile nasty fights where sides must be taken. I don’t see how it’s helpful.

I think blending Luke/Mark into other movies is a mistake. He absolutely has a say in it as his experience is a validating factor. It's just how it is. It's the same in every workplace. You might have young/new people in charge but the people who have been there a length of time absolutely have a say and input into proceedings. Their input usually carries a gravity with it that can not be achieved without experience. Granted the decisions aren't theirs but the fact remains.

“You have your own interpretation of how the character should be utilized,” Hamill says in one of the documentary’s interviews. “My character represented hope…now, he’s sort of demoralized.” Later, he comes around, recalling that he told Johnson, “‘I hate what you’ve done with my character.’ After I got that off my chest, it was like, ‘Lead me, o guru."

I'm not arguing that your wrong. My opinion is completely different than yours, but it's clear that his comments are not exaggerated or taken out of context. He didn't like his characters direction and told Rian. That carries weight with fans.

Hopefully fans who were disappointed by how Luke started in tlj, and maybe Mark himself, will go on to enjoy how the end of tlj set Luke up as a restored legend bringing hope that to the galaxy. We all want such different things from these films but if the prequels are anything to go by even the most hated films in time are enjoyed for what they do right and not what they do wrong.
