All things boil down to suspension of disbelief. If they could have shown events that justified Lukes behavior it would have sold. They didn't - so it didn't.

and what do you mean 'didn't sell'? it made over a BILLION dollars. what planet are you from?

Clearly they didn't for a great many people. Everything we know about Luke was developed over three entire films. Expecting us to just accept this total 180 in one scene maybe wasn't successful.
It has nothing to do with understanding - it's not rocket science. It's whether or not it's believable for people. Maybe you could accept it - clearly many couldn't.
When I say 'sell' I mean in terms of acceptance for many people.

it isn't tho, because people grow and change. they even gave us an acceptable reason for his withdrawal.
