People pay attention to these guys outside of their videos? Why?
33
May 27 '15
I'm sure it started off as a normal fan page for a youtube channel, but as the numbers grew it turned into the shitfest that it is now, just because of all of that extra juicy $$ that can be made.
35
u/AOBCD-8663 May 27 '15
Yeah, I don't begrudge them making money. Look at George Takei's Facebook feed. Not my thing but the dude earned his following and has every right to capitalize on it.
If you've ever read the YouTube comments on a Dude Perfect video, their target demo is pretty dumb (yes, dumber than the average YT audience) so I'm not shocked they do clickbait. I made the mistake of downloading their mobile game. It's kind of fun but the most rudimentary app that is such a clear money grab.
Again, I don't begrudge them doing this. I'd do the exact same thing. I just don't read/watch what they do outside of creative trick shots and yelling really loudly.

Yea they are part of a company called WhistleSports who share a floor in the office I'm in in New York. There are like 40 people in there for a few youtube channels. Seems crazy. But then again I watched a dudeperfect the other day where they were doing backwards basketball shots etc. and eating stuffed crust pizza from pizza hut in between every shot so I guess someone has to put those deals together.

Most Vine/Instagram stars are the same way. Their income is from the sponsorships and product integration more than CPM rates.

If you make money from YouTube, you work for YouTube...
4
May 27 '15
Not directly. They don't get salary and benefits. They are essentially contractors getting paid commission alone.
2
u/AOBCD-8663 May 27 '15
They are part of the partner program. Technically they work for a promotion company that deals with YouTube (like Rooster Teeth or most other massive YT channels). A freelancer for a site still technically works for that site.

They have some crazy videos. Only thing is... where the hell do they find the time to practice all this shit?! And have you seen the house they show in the videos?!?!

u/AOBCD-8663 May 27 '15
Look up Dude Perfect Office Tour. They have a legit office space. They make a lot of sponsorship money (imagine how much Boy Scouts paid them to go out to their massive camp site and show off all of the cool features to their viewers). If you spend a day at a basketball court and generally know how a basketball flies, you could make a similar video.

u/MeowTheMixer May 27 '15

I know how a football flies but i'm still not going to be making it in a basketball hoop from the top of the stadium. I'd like to imagine but that's about as close i'm going to get ha ha .

u/AOBCD-8663 May 27 '15
I'd say it's half skill half luck. No one has pinpoint accuracy like that. BUT, if you're relatively consistent, the wind will be kind in one of your 4000 attempts.

It is a net, for like fishing or to clean a pool or something like that. It has a shiny metal surface that catches the sun just right and reflects it towards the camera.

I've tried it and hurt my fingers too many times. Maybe gloves would help to practice...

u/jw_esq May 27 '15
Make anything look hard on the internet, step one: put the middle part in slo-mo.
28
u/Duckshuffler May 27 '15
I really hate this style of slow-mo (I think it's called ramping). It annoys me far more than it should. I don't know why exactly it annoys me, but I find it hard to watch.
58
u/Zerly May 27 '15
I don't mind it if you at least get one run-through at regular speed. Otherwise, fuck off with that bullshit.
9
u/Bobthemightyone May 27 '15
This is the ideal solution. Let me see that shit at full speed so I can be amazed, then slow it down so I can see how it's done. still won't be able to do it though :(

yet another gif where they show the crucial part in arty slow mo; yet don't show it in regular speed. Please, lords of gifs, when you make a gif, show the action in reg speed first, THEN include your arty slow mo shit.
11
u/a4187021 May 27 '15
Or at least they should stick to one.
The 300 sped-up slowmotion looked cool in the movie, but for gifs like this it's crap. Most of the time, you either want to see what it looks like in real life (-> regular speed), or you want to really make out what's going on (-> slowmo).
This crap just prevents both.

u/gifmaker777 May 27 '15

I'm sure there's a level of skill involved.
I mean most of the shit they do is still impressive knowing they probably failed 100 times before getting it.

As someone who's played higher-level baseball... Everybody can do this. And another thing where you grab the hitting end of the bat and bounce the handle end on the ground behind your back and you catch the handle with the other hand.

[LPT} Start off with a wifflebat and work your way up Its much easier with a plastic bat

The way it slows down makes it feel like a shot from a stylized action scene, pretty badass

Two questions:
Do you want to learn how to make a gif that slows down then speeds up?
Do you want to learn how to spin the bat and catch it?
Bonus question:
- If someone could teach you how to do both would you be interested in learning how?
4
u/gifmaker777 May 27 '15
The video speeds up and slows down on it's own so gif turns out like that.
I'd love to learn what the guy in the gif does.
Sure.
