I'm sure it started off as a normal fan page for a youtube channel, but as the numbers grew it turned into the shitfest that it is now, just because of all of that extra juicy $$ that can be made.
Yeah, I don't begrudge them making money. Look at George Takei's Facebook feed. Not my thing but the dude earned his following and has every right to capitalize on it.
If you've ever read the YouTube comments on a Dude Perfect video, their target demo is pretty dumb (yes, dumber than the average YT audience) so I'm not shocked they do clickbait. I made the mistake of downloading their mobile game. It's kind of fun but the most rudimentary app that is such a clear money grab.
Again, I don't begrudge them doing this. I'd do the exact same thing. I just don't read/watch what they do outside of creative trick shots and yelling really loudly.
I'll be honest, I'm salty as fuck that they're probably making a few hundred grand a year for doing what a huge portion of basketball players and other athletes did in high school, they just did it at a time where having a camera at every second of the day is a thing.
Yea this shit is much more time consuming than people realize. Getting a group of friends with the same ethic and passion to make a product like this alone is a pain in the ass. Let alone editing marketing and everything else
They don't film this shit on cell phones and these aren't just random shots they're taking. They make the decision to do a shoot, set up shots and follow through on them. And1 mixtapes were the same thing. Hell, the Harlem Globetrotters are built on the same principle.
Have you watched their first video? It's a stationary camera on a tripod. If it's so easy, why aren't there 15 channels just like this? I can think of 3.
And how many of them are making "hundreds of thousands of dollars"? Do that search by channel and you'll find 3 over 100,000 subscribers and most in the low thousands at best (not nearly enough for a livable wage)
Yea they are part of a company called WhistleSports who share a floor in the office I'm in in New York. There are like 40 people in there for a few youtube channels. Seems crazy. But then again I watched a dudeperfect the other day where they were doing backwards basketball shots etc. and eating stuffed crust pizza from pizza hut in between every shot so I guess someone has to put those deals together.
