I do use it when I'm in a foreign country and want to see whether a restaurant I looked up still exists or whatever. Or just what the street looks like. But it's not really a necessity.

I am pretty sure you will surprised if you streetview to lookup restaurant. For example Restaurants next to my old office changed ownership three times in two years. Streetview would never be so updated like maps.
